What's wrong with #7? The pay seems fine... I can see that the hours could be long, but that is when mom is traveling. I don't see why it has been posted here.

#7 is $1200 MONTHLY...so $300 a week

but I'm not sure on the issue with #24 - that's $9 an hour, isn't it?

A lot of this week's submissions were pretty weak. Nothing terribly crazy, except for that angry nanny post. Her attitude is terrible and I'd probably fire her too! And a leash for a child? No way. (IMO) And to tell your boss they can't text you to inform you not to come in the next day (WTF?).

Where are all the crazies?

Joanna,

Actually she says the person gets paid bi-weekly. So it is $2,400 MONTHLY ... $600 WEEKLY.

Sorry, I recant that, I just re-read the post and saw it is indeed $300/week.

But for a live in position with access to your own car is this a terrible wage? I've only ever been live out, but I've heard other people getting paid less.

#7 is asking for a lot of availablity and very strict guidelines for just $300 a week. That's $60 a day for being available from 7:30 am to 10 pm. Maybe you'd get a few hours free while the kids are at school, but I think that's not such a great job. And if your hours are unpredictable, you can't really supplement your wages in any way.

Also, I think that nanny rant was pretty entertaining, she sounds young and aggravated.

And what is up with that woman who asks for a teenager 15 or older but smoking is allowed? Weird.

#24 seems like it would be perfect for a college student. It's not a full time nanny gig, but 5 hours a day at $9 an hour, that's not bad.

I hate that all these ads use the word "nanny" when most just want a babysitter. There's a difference and it drives me crazy people don't know it.

I can't figure it out, do people really think they're offering a fair wage, or are they being cheap jerks?

I think the nanny rant was kind of on the mark. She DOES have a right to ask not to be texted at 9pm the night before about not coming in to work... texts sometimes don't come through OR wake people if they are asleep... she may not have fouind out till 6am the next morning when she dragged herself out of bed to go to work. As for the leash thing, I hate those things... but safetly first or DISCIPLINE maybe? As for the late arrival phonecall... she has a right to say no. Even if she could sleep in until noon the next day. Although I have never been called to be asked for something like that so I wouldn't know that curtosy. I am just saying I agree that she has a right to be upset at those things.

Nanny flamers, I totally agree with you that some of what she said was on the mark. I hate that some parents are like the ones she mentioned, but I can't help but wonder if there is more to the story. There has to be right? And maybe she wasn't as open with her annoyances with her employers and then just blew up. Who knows? I think it's horrible that some parents are so inconsiderate, but I also think that a nanny who is that aggressive isn't one I would want to hire.
And Kim, I think "fair wages" are relative to the parents. They often don't seem to think about the fact that their nannies/sitters need money too. They don't seem to break it down like we nannies immediately do. They think "$250 a week, $50 a day 9-5, that's great". They don't think, "that's only $6.50 an hour". My point, even in hard financial times, parents do need to think of their sitters as employees who need money too. That's why it's outrageous to see some people offer .96 an hour.

if you cannot afford the going rate for childcare, STOP HAVING KIDS!!!Or... oh, I don't know... maybe just raise them yourself instead of sub-contracting it out to people willing to work for less than minimum wage. You get what you pay for.

Nanny and Mother,

I think you're right. When I was interviewing last time, I had a lot of people who wanted to pay minimum wage or less. I would tell them I wasn't interested and explained that I am a professional. I have a degree and experience, and that I needed to be able to LIVE and PAY BILLS on the money they gave me. I did it nicely, but hoped that they wouldn't low ball the next candidate, or would rethink their childcare choice.

It seems like everyone believes they are entitled to have a nanny, but don't want to pay for it. It's like anything else, you get what you can pay for. You don't buy a $100,000 car if you make $40,000 a year. You don't get a nanny if you don't make enough money to pay them.

God, 96¢ an hour? Why do people think anyone would be willing to do ANYTHING for a job that takes 4 hours to buy a gallon of milk? (8 hours if it has to be organic!)

don't ever hire someone who can't spell resume

The two common-sense answers to 96 cents an hour were flagged on craigslist. Guess it's not ok to try and get some sense into people. Oh, the cheapo ad is still running though.
