Received Monday, March 17, 2008-Possible Update
I was in the Wayland Sq Starbucks today and believe that I saw this same nanny. She had 3 little kids with her this time though, 2 girls and a boy. She was paying no attention to the kids and often walked away from the table leaving them with sad and bored little faces. I guess that Im not reporting anything ground breaking her but I figure that if the parents see these posts they may rethink things.

Received Wednesday, October 25, 2006
Au pair: Short, thin, long dark hair, Asian
Children: approx. 18 month-old girl and 9 month-old girl.
This happened a few weeks ago, but I never knew of this web site and wasn't sure what to do with what I witnessed. The au pair arrived with a double jogging stroller with both girls in it for story time. They were a little early. The au pair then took the older girl out of the stroller and left the store!! There was plenty of people around waiting for story time to start, and she could have easily asked any of us to watch the little girl while she ran out. She didn't say anything to anyone in the store, and left the baby in the stroller while she went next door to CVS with the older girl. After about five minutes the baby started fussing. About five minutes after that the au pair returned with the 18 month-old and a bag of cookies from CVS. It is completely unacceptable to leave that child in the store alone. On other occasions I have seen the au pair hit the 18 month-old's hand, hard enough to make her cry. The au pair has also picked up the baby's pacifier off the floor and given it back to the baby without washing it off. She has also let the 18 month-old drink a friend's Starbucks frozen drink, which young children should not be drinking. There is a group of au pairs that go to story time together and sit and chat the entire time, and hardly pay attention to these poor children. I have never seen parents with these girls. Only the au pair. I have seen her at the park as well as at story time on many different occasions, usually chatting with her friends and not paying attention to the children.

it is appalling to me that anyone, parent or nanny would leave a child alone in a store! if you see this nanny as regularly as you say you do, you should ask for the parents phone number to set up a playdate with the kids and then inform the parents of what this nanny has been doing! i am a nanny and would never even think about leaving one of my charges alone! this gives good nannys a bad rap! BOOOOO!

I agree with the previous poster. This is absolutely appalling. Good for you for posting here, and I would see if you can find a way to contact the parents (I like the suggestion of asking for info for a fake playdate). Also, if she leaves the children unattended again, I would seriously consider calling the police. Children absolutely should not EVER be left alone like this. Good grief.

I am absolutely horrified by this posting! what nanny in her right mind would ever think that leaving a child alone in a public place is ever okay?! I too am a nanny and the girls I watch are 8 and 9 and I know the parents let them go to the bathroom alone in public but I can't even bring myself to do that. I think that the idea of setting up a playdate is a fantastic idea...I hope that you get the opportunity to let these parents know what is going on. Good Luck!

Did the last au pair post open the floodgates for au pair posts? Or what?

to the last poster, don't you think it's nice that people are leaving comments regarding the post instead of political crap? this is exactly what this site is intended for, people to post with advice, whether they think the nanny is a good or bad one, etc.

The au pair/nanny/babysitter, whatever the correct term for her position may be, should be arrested and fired. Great idea of setting up a playdate.

Typical ad for Au Pairs
My employer routinely gets laughed at and told she is crazy to pay me 20.00 per hour when she could have a LIVE OUT AU Pair (Yes they have them though it's not technically right to call them an AU Pair if they live out)For about 3 bucks an hour but, rmember, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!!

I blame the parents as well. I am sure they don't bother with their children. Having a young girl from another country watching three children, is irresponsible.

...and I am sure lonely and tiring for the aupair.

I have posted about this topic before. I have a friend who's relatives run an agency in Jamaica that many agencies here use to place Au Pairs and other domestic employees. Some of your top rated nanny agencies use larger clearing-house type organizations to contact the overseas agencies for placement. The claims in ads like the ones above are mostly embellished truths. Of course the US Department of labor has to approve the travel so they can get the work visa. This lends absolutely no credibility as to the quality of the person you are receiving into your home, as the background checks conducted in many countries are hardly extensive and, in the case of Au Pairs from Jamaica, are not always done. Basically, anyone who hasn't committed murder or serious theft, and can raise the 2500.00 - 3500.00 fees to come over will be allowed to do so. Part of this money is used to "buy" their visa rather than apply for one. Many do this with the intention of running away once here. I have this information first hand, from a woman here illegally who's family runs this sort of business. When a relative came over, and was forced to sleep on a used mattress with another woman as she worked as a Live Out Au Pair-I called her boss, A Russian Woman working for an attorney who owned one of these larger clearing house type places that the smaller agencies use to get her back pay and overtime pay she earned but never received. In addition, she was being charged 100.00 a week to live in a vermin infested room, sleep on a soiled mattress she had to share with a total stranger, and had 4 other roommates from Russia and Poland! I want to emphasis I am not stating ALL agencies are like this. And I have never heard of, or dealt with 1-800-AU PAIRS. But some are. Unfortunately, for legal reasons and personal welfare of people involved, I can't name the agencies I know of for sure, But I would STRONGLY advise caution when using any agency regardless of their reputation and instead of getting general and often falsified references, ask for references from LOCAL families to you that STILL have the Au Pair in their employment, If they are truly reputable, yours surely won't be the very first Au Pair the have placed in your area.. Many of these agencies provide relatives, friends and even paid strangers to provide false references. If you truly want the cultural benefits of exposing your children to a person from another country, try the colleges that offer an exchange student program.
