The Golfing Nanny

Question: My nanny has been "teaching" my son to golf on our putting green. She played in college. He likes playing with her and wants to learn more. We belong to a country club. I can have the nanny go with my son and cover everything with our membership. If it is during regular hours, it would be just like going to a movie or swimming, and there would be no extra pay. She doesn't have anywhere to golf so if she takes him on the weekend on her time and we cover everything, including the cart, is that enough? She wants to do this. She offered. She is not a professional. I know the pros at the club get a lot of money for a round. My husband says getting to golf on such a nice course is reward enough. Your thoughts? I think we should pay what we would pay her to work those hours on a Saturday. We want this to be an ongoing thing, so I need to get it right and keep everyone happy. A second, more minor concern is that the club has a strict dress code, and she doesn't seem to have that sort of conservative sports attire. Where is a good place in Westchester to send someone for budget club attire?

How to pay and what to pay are some of our most frequent questions from employers. Email us at isynblog@gmail.com.

Buy the clothes for her. Your club, your desire, you pay for 2 outfits. Order on Amazon or something. Yes, pay her her regular sat fee plus overtime if its more than reg hours. Yes pay for everythin else. Your husband is cheap. Golfing with a kid is not a vacation, its work, not like ifs he was by herself.

She's offering the lessons at no extra cost? Golf lessons are expensive. She's not getting to play for her own enjoyment. She'll be teaching. It's different. If she doesn't have her own golf clubs, I'd buy her a nice set. If she does this during the week, the Golf clubs and outfits would be payment enough- provided you get quality stuff. On the weekends, pay her for giving up her Saturday.

We've had several nannies teach our children things. One nanny taught out daughters
Tennis. We bought her pro equipment plus provided her her own membership to an exclusive club. She still uses it even though she's no longer our nanny. Another taught our daughter how to play the Cello. We actually got her a three thousand dollar Cello as a thank you.

It's expensive, but if you want your children to learn from professionals, you have to pay!

You pay for her time and all other expenses, including clothing if you expect her to dress a certain way.

I agree with momofthree - buy her equipment (clubs, outfits, etc -or better yet, get her a giftcard and let her purchase her own clothing) and cover costs during the week. On Saturdays, pay her regular hourly rate and cover costs. It's not the same as playing yourself for pleasure, but she obviously enjoys teaching, which is great! Speaking from personal experience, though, it's easy for something that was once fun to become a drain if you start to get taken advantage of. a small thank-you gift every couple of months goes a long way towards feeling appreciated! :)

Pay for the clothes and ask her if she would like extra compensation for teaching him to play golf.

momofthree has it pretty good - any extra teaching skill should be compensated - and you are wise to realize it takes time and thought to be fair - hope your son learns alot!

Hours worked outside of her regular work schedule should also be compensated. I'm not sold on the overtime here, because it's essentially a different job. It's not being asked to work extra nanny hours.

Side note: has anyone else noticed that when a post here includes the phrase "my husband says," the words that follow almost always indicate a guy trying to get someone to work cheaply or for free? Which I find funny/sad, as they'd be the last people to want to work cheaply or for free.
