Charles A Dana Discovery Center - Harlem NY

BADNANNYSIGHTING
Harlem NY: was in New York and reemed out another nanny. Hoping this message makes it back to the parents.
Nanny: short (5'2" maybe?) Filipino-like middle aged woman.
Caring for: young white twins, or of similar age (maybe 18mo - 3yrs old? I could only see the feet and they looked the same size/age)
Stroller: brown with orange (colors may be off) sidebyside jogger.
Where: Playground bathroom (Charles A Dana Discovery Center) was between MalcomeXBlvd/Lenox Ave and Frawley Circle/5th Avenue - off of W110/Central Park N.
When: Monday 8/20 around 2pm - give or take 30 minutes.
Nanny left children outside of bathroom stall. After confronting her, her defense was that she can see the stroller under the stall - my response was "how the hell are you going to chase down the kidnapper with your pants around your ankles locked behind a stall?" I can only pray this gets to the family and that I scared the crap out of her and she won't ever do it again.

Please send your nanny sightings to isynblog@gmail.com . #isyn #isawyournanny #nannysighting #harlemnanny #harlem

Eeek....

I guess I am guilty as charged.

I have gone into a public bathroom stall w/out bringing in multiple children.
They stand outside the door and I constantly talk to them while I do my business.

You just may hear about me next.....

I worked as a professional in the field of chlild welfare for 30 plus years. One should be more concerned about sexual abuse by family and friends than a stranger abduction. They are extremely rare.

Yeah, I'm guilty as well. when the littlest was an infant I'd try to wait it out and go into the handicap stall with the carriage, but curious toddler asking all sorts of questions about body parts? Yeah, no, the kids don't need to watch me pee. I'd do the same with my own children.

This Nanny was an idiot. It would be just slightly different if the children were old enough to communicate with the nanny through the door. But with 18 month old charges I would have waited for the handicapped stall, brought the stroller inside and turned it toward the opposite wall.

Why is a sighting from August 20th just now being posted?

Calanna, it was a new reader.

Nope, I would have done the same thing. How often do children get kidnapped right out of the bathroom? No instances come to mind.

^^Sorry, that last one was me. Silly hubby kept his account signed in on my computer.

thank you OP for the sighting and keeping your eyes open - this is obviously an interesting issue that needs to be considered !

maybe in these days sometimes it's better to err on the side of caution...

even though there are different views any person who - in good faith - intervenes to help a child is a hero IMO

any updates let us know OP!

This post reminds me of an incident when my son was younger...possibly around 6 or 7. I was alone with him in a large department store and he had to use the restroom. I was too afraid to let him use the Men's bathroom alone because I was afraid there might be someone creepy in there who could possibly hurt my baby boy and I wouldn't be able to do anything if I just waited outside the door.

(I live in CA where a while back a young boy had his throat slit while his Auntie waited outside the Men's bathroom door. She heard nothing.) For some reason, that case never left me. :(

Anyway, so I took my son in the Women's bathroom and this woman totally flipped on me and my son saying he had no right to be there and she was going to call Security. My son was so freaked out by her that he NEVER wanted to set foot again in the Ladie's restroom so I had no choice but to wait outside the Men's restroom door and just keep my finger's crossed there was no pedophile lurking in there.

People need to stop assuming that public restrooms are always safe because they are not. Remember they are called PUBLIC restrooms for a reason. ANYONE can just use them at anytime.

Have you ever went into a movie theatre bathroom in the middle of a movie? It is so creepy and empty and big. If I were to kill someone, that would be the perfect set-up.

Let's keep our children safe.

When my son was too old to bring into the women's room with me, but still too young for me to feel safe letting him use the men's room by himself, I would open the door to the men's room and hold it open the whole time while my son used one of the stalls. I didn't care how many dirty looks I got, and I don't care how outrageous that might seem to anyone. It was a five-minute slice of my life that happened maybe a dozen times over the course of a year.

A woman tried that on. Saying that my son could go in the boys bathroom. He is six but has special needs. I said oh no he is not. He never goes in the mens room unless my husband is with us. Then of course he goes in with his dad.

Some people need to mind their own business. It is scary. There was a case close to home in NJ. A 8 year old was in the Dunkin Donuts bathroom washing his hands. A man tried to lure him out of the store with him. Crazy world

Lame,
If I allow the posters of sightings to be abused they will no longer submit them.

As has been said here before, we weren't there and should take what the OP says as truth.

A few years back while at a park restroom a drunken man tried to lure my little charge into a stall but thankfully another man walked in to stop it. I was scared as hell. The police were called and I was actually worried I'd lose my job over it because in hindsight I should've taken him into the womens bathroom. But stupid me was worried I'd get nasty glares. It was my first nanny gig and I should've known better. Thank god alot of public restrooms, especially in malls, have a "family" restroom now. So much safer.

Calanna-thanks for the idea about holding the men's room door open. I don't even have kids yet, but I've often thought that if I have a boy I'll take him into the women's restroom with me until he's like TWELVE or something. For some reason this idea has always petrified me. I've thought of "accidentally" walking into the mens room then saying, "Whoops, sorry!" then also adding loudly, "OK, I'll wait right outside son!!" Your idea is a good one, and the mom could still say "I'M WAITING FOR YOU".

And ericsmom someone said your SIX-year-old was too old to go in the women's bathroom?! Six is very young :( I thought it would take at least an 8-year-old to get people complaining. Sigh.

Sorry for switching tenses there! I apparently can't even write coherently about the subject.

I would never have my twin boy charges watching me go to the bathroom, that is wrong. I have the boys be on the other side of the stall and show me their feet while i ask them to talk or sing together so I can hear them. (3 yr olds)

NannyBrandie said...

It could really go either way, I have done both. When they were younger I brought them in the bathroom with me. When they were older they preferred to wait by the stall. I don't really see the harm in either or, but I'm a pretty laid back person, and it seem like a lot of responders on this thread are pretty worked up about it.
