Trio Lets Rats Chew Baby's Toes - Ohio
Three people have been accused of letting rats bite a 6-week-old girl and chew off her toes at their cluttered Ohio mobile home. Pike County prosecutor Rob Junk says the baby's toes on one foot were gone when sheriff's deputies went to the home Sunday after receiving an anonymous tip. A married couple and the 18-year-old boyfriend of the baby's mother are charged with felony child endangering. They were in court for an initial hearing Tuesday. They're jailed pending a plea hearing in two weeks. The baby is in fair condition at a Columbus hospital. (continued)
Dog Drags Newborn from Family Home - Kentucky
A father was frantically calling 911 to report his newborn missing when he spotted the baby, bleeding from the mouth and clutched in the mouth of a family dog who had carried him from his crib to the heavily wooded backyard. Four-day-old Alexander James Smith was rushed to the emergency room at University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday with two collapsed lungs, a skull fracture, broken ribs and various cuts and bruises. His father, Michael Smith, said doctors were optimistic the boy would survive. (continued)

What the hell is wrong with people?!
i live near lexington and the most surprising thing to me is the fact that some people around here are REALLY blaming the dog, saying that having animals is dangerous and championing the fact that the animal will be put down. nevermind the fact that IF the dog REALLY went in, jumped up on the crib, grabbed the quiet baby, got him down, took him through the house, and managed to get 200 yards away, he did it all without the parents noticing. and that's if you actually believe their story ...
I think the parents framed the dog.
Omigosh, these stories are horrifying!!!
As for the comment by Erin . . . It only takes a few seconds for the dog to grab the baby and bring him outside. It sounds like the parents noticed right away and that is why the father was able to find the dog and the baby in the woods.
I do not believe in allowing large animals (or any animals, really) to have access to small children when parents are not right there. I never even laid my infant on the floor with my very docile sheltie...because with animals, you can never be 100 percent certain.
That said, I also have sympathy for these animals, who are put in situations where they are villified for acting like....animals. Like that ape the woman kept in her he who mauled her neighbor and was shot to death by the police. It was an APE. It didn't belong dressed up in some crazy lady's house. Use common sense, people. Animals do not deserve to die because people are stupid.
the poor dog. I heard that someone wanted to put it to sleep. I think that the parents should be put to sleep.
The dog will absolutely be put to sleep. No question.
Not even apologetic about it, are you mom? Sounds like you have a little glee from the dog being put down.
I really wonder about the dog story... I hope the police are looking in to it in depth because it seems so unlikely to me. I wonder if there was some foul play involving the parents.
If it was a big dog and not well trianed. Why yes I could see it happen that way. Especially if it is territorial.
This dog is part wolf, and has a history of removing items from the house and taking them to woods. I agree that I wouldn't leave the dog alone with my infant for a second. However, it could simply be a case of someone not pulling the door shut completely, so that the dog was still able to get in the room. Purely accidental. The baby was 4 days old, so maybe the parents were still getting used to having him home and taking all those precautions.
I agree with throw me a bone. And I don't necessarily think that the dog will be put down. I saw the story on the news last night and the dad said he "wasn't mad at the dog". The dog carried the baby to the woods like the would have carried a puppy. He wasn't attacking the baby. There's a huge difference between an attack and what happened in this case. And personally I wouldn't leave a dog alone near a baby either, but were they just supposed to get rid of their dog when the woman got pregnant? It probably would have gotten put down if they did that. I think they probably just forgot to close the baby's door all the way, and this was just a horrible accident.
Besides that, why isn't anyone even reacting to the other story? The parents were SO much more in the wrong in that story. It's just sick.
What gives,
Actually I'm sort of flattered that you "heard" my "glee"...what with all of the other voices living in your head.
Good one, mom.
I agree with throw me a bone and hey.
If you read the rats story carefully, the mother is a minor and it sounds like she may have been the one to call the police on her parents and 18 year old boyfriend, as they were the ones who got arrested for letting rats chew off the baby's toes.
Can you imagine the kind of filth they are living in.
This story is really horrifying!
In fact, I would love to hear some nannies' stories about parents living in filth and things like that. I wonder if this is a good idea for a set of stories for this blog.
Fox in Sox
We actually did have a few Nannies in the past describe the filthy living conditions they were subjected to while caring for their charges. I am with you... if there are any others out there that live in deplorable conditions, we want to hear about it.
I wonder if you and Jane could solicit some stories like this.
