Man goes on Rampage at Belgium Daycare
A man went on a rampage at a Belgium day care center Friday, stabbing two young children and a female worker to death and sending 10 other children to the hospital, officials said. Sobbing parents rushed to the scene and to hospitals, as officials reported some of the wounded children were in serious condition.

"People are totally in shock," said Leene Du Bois, a spokeswoman for the regional government of Flanders. "Nobody would have imagined anyone could do so much harm. There is much grief." She said the perpetrator had no connection to the day care center.

This is just too much!!!

My heart and thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

This is horrible. :(

Why wasn't there any security that could have prevented this monster from entering?

Heartbreaking. My prayers go out to all of the children and their families, also.

Haha sorry, security?

It's a daycare center-not a kindergarten. Why would there be security??

That man is crazy. It could've happened anywhere and anytime. The daycare center is not to blame.

I'm not blaming the Daycare center, but even the Officials are questioning why there wasn't better security in place.

And I don't know where you live, but most DC have some kind of security to protect their children.

No need to be insensitive on this issue. It's not funny.

maybe if you come to the benelux, you'll know why such security is very rare. in fact, i have never seen a daycare centre with security. the centres are very good and well-regulated but there's no such thing as a guard standing in front of daycare centers in the benelux. i am of course, very horrified about the incident (it makes me not want to send my child to a daycare center) but as said, this could have happened anywhere, anytime. A sick, crazy person like that might have chosen a park or a school or a supermarket..not sending my child to a daycare center wouldn't help.

re-post for anonymous:
Any places that has children should have some sort of security.

My heart goes out to the family, daycare stuff and everyone involved.

You are in my prayers and thoughts.

ila, so this happened near you, or near your region?

I know in the states we try to take great care as far as security for our children. Some places use locks from the outside (unlocked from inside- fire safety), some use cameras.... but it's true, this could have just as easily happened at a park, and it's a tragedy, period.

I live in LA and we don't have security at our daycare centers. Usually a couple of metal gates you have to get through and a code, but unless the guy was weilding the knife at the gate or looked really sketchy, most moms would have let him in assuming he was there to pick up his kid. Just what would a camera or gate do? Anyone who really wanted too could get through those barriers. You seem to forget the guy who shot all those little Jewish kids in Los Angeles? It happens world wide, don't kid yourself.

I would never place any child of mine in an area where security measures weren't taken. There doesn't have to be an armed guard outside, but it is VITAL that there be someone checking people in and out of the building! Maybe he would still find a way in by pretending to be an uncle or brother of a kid, but I'd guess this wasn't premeditated.

Jeesh, I won't even live in a building that doesn't have 3 locked doors and a guard before getting to my apartment, why would I just let my kid sit in a building with absolutely no protection.

PEOPLE, THESE ARE YOUR CHILDREN!!!

We don't have all the facts and details here, but there should have been more security and parents should accept no less than the BEST for their children.

Of course, the doors are locked. If you'd bothered reading the article, the man got in on the pretext of asking a question.

In general, the Benelux is very safe-so safe that people have been lulled into a (in this case, false) sense of security.

It was premeditated (when they caught him at a supermarket, he had an address of another daycare center 3 km away). The man is 20 years old, unemployed and is said to be a 'film freak'.

This is what the daycare center looks like (this one actually had somewhere you can park your care. Most are in the center, have no driveways and in fact, many parents just cycle there!).

This is what it looks like inside that daycare center.

Thank you for the information, Mei.

I read in the paper the guy had black and white makeup on his face. And went thru an unlocked door??

Most daycares I visited have a code system to get in. Or locked door. And the office staff is up front as well. And they can see who is at the window.

Thank you for the additional information, I was only going off the limited info posted here on this blog.

i don't see how security would have helped unless you had an armed guard. he killed a teacher too, not just kids.

MRS. PERSNICKETY,

With respect, you're leaving no wiggle room for reality in your demands for security.

Look, we don't all live in the city and those of us that do, not all of us live in large cities where security is such a concern.

Don't get me wrong, there are still people who keep an eye on who comes in or out of the doors of any daycare center or school, but beyond that there is little more than a fence. No gates.

As for apartments, three gates and a guard? None, read none, of the apartments around me have more than a gate and most don't even have that.

There just isn't a need for it. It would be a waste of money and as many on here have already made clear, wouldn't stop an event like this from happening.

It's a false sense of security from monsters like these. Such security only really only ever prevents thieves; thus the cameras.
