Park near the Brooklyn Library in Brooklyn, NY

Received Thursday, October 2, 2008
nanny sighting logo I was with my kids at the park located near the Brooklyn Library when I saw a nanny with long dreads came in the park with a little boy in a Maclaren stroller with a Grey color. She was baby sitting a little Chinese boy name Sam. Sam was left unattended by her nanny Jacky while she was yapping with her friends in the park. Thereafter, when she finally found Sam she started yelling, screaming and mistreating Sam. I'm not sure whose her boss but she needs to be reprimanded by her boss or even fired for displaying such a behavior to an innocent kid.

I think I need to visit NY because I know many mothers and people who let their kids go to the park by themselves (a lot live close by, likebehind the park, but still)

are NY parks really dangerous? I am actually asking this because I have never set foot there. Thanks.

well loves jason,
I was just there in Brooklyn, and, although I thought it looked like a relatively nice place, it is extremely crowded and there are a LOT of very different people there...and I was a little surprised and unnerved to turn on the news one morning and hear about several violent crimes that had taken place in Brooklyn the day before, including two children having been shot, in separate incidents, as they went about their normal daily lives, and a police officer who opened the door to his apartment only to be shot dead by his ex girlfriend's new beau. If I recall correctly, they were also in the process of a manhunt for some criminal. I got the impression there is alot of crime there.
However I must say that I have no idea how large an area Brooklyn encompasses. I lived most of my life in Orange County California. There are parts of OC that are practically crime free and parts of OC that you would never want to accidentally wander into after dark. Maybe Brooklyn is like that?

Somebody from there please clarify for us.

PS best Pizza EVER in Brooklyn!!!! We had to wait in line for nearly an hour outside the pizza place to even get in...but it was SOOOOOO worth it!

Yes, we have crime in Brooklyn, but, there is also crime in Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx, etc.. And, just like everywhere else, there are areas with more crime and areas with worse crime.

Now OP, when you say Brooklyn Library, are you talking about the main branch of the Brooklyn Library or some local branch?

wow that is so sad!! I know there is crime everywhere, but that really breaks my heart how bad it is in NY. Although I really wanna visit there sometime. lol.

Jason Castro,
Go to NY. It's is an incredible experience!! We go every year just because it's so great there.

Ususally we stay in Manhattan, but this year we stayed in Brooklyn. Nothing against Brooklyn at all, but I suggest Manhattan as the place to stay...somewhere not terribly far from Times Square and the park if possible. Then you can walk to plays or great restaurants and great shopping, and the park.

Yes, because we don't have great restaurants or parks here in Brooklyn, LOL!

Yeah really. What the West Coast is free of crime? Doesn't L.A. have a high rate of crime? What about the gang violence in L.A.? I wouldn't want to drive in certain areas over there when I was visiting. Scary.

Maybe Orange County seems to be crime free. But I am sure theres a big drug problem there as well. Alot of rich kids buying drugs in L.A. then going back home to their perfect little lives.

Me,
If oyu are talking ot me, go back and read my post carefully...specifically the part about OC.

And gimmeabreak...didn't I say I had the best pizza ever in Brooklyn? The rerstaurants are great and we had fun. It's just that there is soooo much to do in Manhattan that it owul dbe easier to stay there and take the subway over to Brooklyn for a day. There;s just more variety near Times Square. You have ot admit that. And if a person has always wanted ot see NY, that is the place to see the most.

In the FBI city crime rankings per capita in '07, Detroit was #1, followed by:

"Last year’s crime leader, St. Louis, fell to No. 2. Another Michigan city, Flint, ranked third, followed by Oakland Calif.; Camden, N.J.; Birmingham, Ala.; North Charleston, S.C.; Memphis, Tenn.; Richmond, Calif.; and Cleveland."

So in crime per capita, NYC doesn't even make the top ten!

Mom, I would not recommend staying near Times Square. There are hotels in much nicer areas. Transportation is easy. Subways, busses and cabs are available 24/7.

New York City is amazing. And by the city, I mean the 5 boroughs of Manhattan. However I would never let my child go unattended even for a minute. There are so many people all over and most are kind, but there are some creeps.

I love NY! I love NYC! I'd probably say that I love Brooklyn, but I didn't make it there on my my trip to NYC. Unfortunately I spent to much time on the tour bus and on Canal Street! I can say that IMO Juniors has the best cheesecake though! I was told they originated in Brooklyn.

Hello All!
Mom,
What was the name of this pizza place in Brooklyn?

Anonymous said...

Am I on the wrong thread? What do any of these replies have to do with the original post???

ericatomten1,

I don't remember the name! But the background will help (Could it be Grimaldi's...or something like that?) Apparently there was a great pizza place and then somebody opened another one...and then there was some fight over the name and one was forced to change its name. One of them is called Patsy's (I think)...and we went to the other one. It was sort of near the water. WE waited in line on the sidewalk for a very long time, until we were let in to sit practically in the laps of the people at the table next to us. Ohhh, was that pizza great! (And I was told by my friend that if people linger too long, they are asked to vacate the table for the next person in line.)

We do always go to Juniors for cheesecake...but this time I had the Strawberry shortcake instead...YUM! Try it.

We also ate at a great Italian restaurant one night. I don't recall the name...but it was on the same street as the NuHotel, which was where we stayed. We ate on a fully enclosed patio at the back of the restaurant.

Manhattan nanny,
Where are the good places to stay? My all time favorite is the Waldorf. We stayed there many times, when my husband used to get a GREAT rate there (under $300.00...can you believe it! And they usually upgraded our room at that!) Last year i tried to get a reservation at the Waldorf and it was over $700.00 a night..so we stayed at a Hilton near Radio City. It wasn't bad, but it was no Waldorf...but it was much cheaper anyway (Ironically, about what we used to pay for the Waldorf. Waaaa!) This year we spent an entire afternoon wandering in Central Park on a day where it sprinkled on and off. It was so beautiful and peaceful.

I do love New York.

So mom, did you find the time to check out Park
Slope?

Anonymous said...

Nope, I never did get to park Slope. We got there too late on a Friday and people told me not to bother looking on a weekend. We left late on Monday, but our day just filled itself up too fast.

But I did see a lot of families walking around on the weekend with kids in tow, so I got the impression that there are lots of families there who really do love their kids. That always makes me feel good.

Anonymous said...

Aw, too bad mom! We could have done lunch if you had come to Park Slope

Anonymous said...

Awwww, darn it! Well, I do go to NY every year!

Anonymous said...

Yes, Mom, it is called Grimaldi's! I live in Brooklyn and that is my favorite pizza place on earth!! I'm glad you got the chance to experience it. :)

Anonymous said...

yup it is always the park slope parents who hog the thread away from the original poster, that is why they are so hated...

Mom,
I think you would like the Stanhope, on Fifth Ave. right across the street from the Metropolitan Museum.

Anonymous said...

"because I said so", WTH are you talking about? sheesh

Anonymous said...

Thanks Manhattan Nanny. I'll look into it next time. I'm making a note for my basket right now.It isn't $700.00 a night, is it? Because my husband and friend frown upon that. And, if I'm going to be on 5th Ave., I'd like the extra cash for SAKS!
