Leland Taylor Park in Colusa, Ca

I do not consider this abusive or neglectful- just disturbing from the perspective of a germaphobe.

I observed two nannies having lunch with their children today near the picnic areas.
The nanny I had my eye on was middle aged, hispanic, medium weight, short, curly brown hair wearing grey sweatshirt. She had a little boy facing her in a stroller with white frame and green striped fabric. The little boy was over one and under two. Lunch had clearly been packed from home as they were eating out of paper sacks and off of tin foil. The nanny I was watching would take a bite of a hotdog (bun and all) chew it up and then take it out of her mouth and put it in the child's mouth. As a germaphobe, this troubled me.

Are you sure this wasn't birds you were watching? Yuck. I'm not a germophobe, and that disturbs me.

So you'd rather the kid choke on the hotdog?? Come on...lots of parents chew up their kids food

What about packing appropiate food for a child that age? Is that NOT an option? Gross.

What! Are you serious!!!! Nasty!

"lots of parents chew up their kids food"?? Umm... I don't think so, at least not in this country. Everybody I've ever met uses these nifty things called "knives" to get food into smaller pieces.

perhaps the nanny was of Eskimo Indian persuasion where that is an acceptable mothering practice.

She could be hispanic (mexican) my mother did that for us when we were kids, not to say it is ok. She was doing what generations before her had done. I almost went into convulsions when she tried to feed my child this way, and asked as politely as I could to not do that again.

p.s. to the germophobe

hope you think the same thing when you are making out with your significant:P

This is absolutely disgusting. She should have packed a more appropriate lunch for the child or just fed him bits of the soft roll. My stomache actually turned when I read this post.

I have heard of parents doing this but I agree with all the posters who find it completely disgusting and unsanitary. Yes, we have opposable thumbs and the ability to make and USE tools so therefore we do NOT need to mash up food and then regurgitate it for our young as birds and wolves do. Use a knife fergodzsake!

This is revolting! I hope the parent(s) of this child are fortunate enough to find their way to this post.

I once had my 5 year old daughter tell me that when our nanny was feeding my younger 18 month old son she'd put the food she was going to feed him up to her mouth (lips) to check the temperature. Of course my drama queen 5 year old also added that when the nanny blew on the food to "cool it" she would spritz it with her saliva. Although I know this is a common practice, I was not comfortable with her doing this to the food my son was going to ingest. One time she was feeding him homemade (by me) alphabet pasta soup and she picked up, with her fingers, - - and scooped up with her hands (the same way you would clear a table of crumbs) the pasta that spilled out of his mouth and onto the table top and placed it back in his bowl and fed it to him. This I got to see on our nanny cam. Seeing that was pretty disturbing. The following day, I spoke with her about it and asked her not to do those things again and she never did. She was a wonderful nanny who stayed with our family for almost 3 years.

I am a nanny and I put food to my lips to test it to make sure it is not too hot all the time. Sure I don't do it if I am sick but other wise it is not going to hurt the kid. As for chewing food I have not chewed it but I bitten a piece off for them before. When not at home I peal apple by eating the peal off it for them.
As for chewing the mom chews ice up for the older on to keep him happy in airplanes and restraunts I refuse to do that.

PLEASE PEOPLE, WITH ALL THE HORRIBLE THINGS HAPPENING WITH CHILDREN ALL OVER THE WORLD, FIND SOMETHING MORE DISTURBING THAN A NANNY TRYING TO KEEP HER LITTLE ONE FROM CHOKING ON A HOT DOG, TO GO OFF ABOUT. I PERSONALLY KNOW OF A LITTLE ONE THAT DIED JUST THAT WAY AND MY GIRLFRIEND WAS DEVESTATED.
I ALSO HAD A STEPDAUGHTER WHOS NANNY LOCKED HER AND SOME OTHER CHILDREN IN WOODEN CRATES TO KEEP THEM UNDER CONTROL. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE HORRIBLE THINGS THAT HAPPEN TO OUR CHILDREN THAT WE SHOULD BE SPENDING OUR TIME WORRYING ABOUT, NOT SOMETHING SO PETTY.

we are one of the few countries that dont do this. find something more important to complain about

I am sorry but this is disgusting and just becos there are worse things happening out there does not make this acceptable. As again there are more appropriate ways of cutting this food up if you insist on feeding a choking hazard to the child. Maybe the food should be avoided all together!!

That is disturbing for me. And for those of you that said that lots of mothers do it. Its one thing for the mother of the child to do it. But the Nanny? are you kidding me!!! That is not acceptable. I would fire the Nanny if i saw her do that too. But that is my opinion.

that is gross...she should chopped it up prior then gave it to the child.

I have an 11 month old and I don't even do that....we diced it chop it so small all she has to do is mush it up in her mouth her self if that....

someone should tell her that is not good to do....
and who cares if it's not your child that's out of respect for the parent...
