7) Nanny - Babysitting (Florida)
Hi: This posting is for a Nanny/ Babysitter in the Seven Oaks/ Wesley Chapel area. I am a single mom who works very long hours and I am looking for someone who can:

1) Pick up my daughter in the mornings (Wed and some Thurs), get her ready for the day, take her over to medical appointments in New Tampa and then to school on those days. (7:30-11 am ish) - must have a license and reliable transportation and/ or clean driving record & own insurance.
2) Work occasionally a week-night or two when I need to go out after work (6-9 or 6-10).
3) 1-2 times per month, handle "overnights" at home with my daughter. I travel for work sometimes 2-4 days. I need someone who can help get her ready in the morning, put her on the bus or take her to her appointments, in the evening pick her up, make her dinner, help her with assignments or play, bathtime, bedtime, be there overnight or until I can get home from the aiport on the final night of a trip. I have a guest room.
4) Occasionally cover a weekend day plus overnight (like a Saturday morning through late Saturday night or Sunday morning for instance) when I have obligations.
Daughter is 7. Want someone who will read with her, help her with homework, play with her, converse with her... not park her in front of the television.

Must be able to prepare dinner for her, must be of driving age.
Must be reliable, trustworthy, have good references, be a non-smoker or able to non-smoke around my kid/home, this is a minimum of 1 year of sitting, possibly longer-term.
I have a dog and two cats, so I need someone also animal-friendly and animal-responsible.
I would need to see a license, registration (if your vehicle), insurance, references for check, and able to pass a background check.

They pay is hourly on a 1099 reporting basis, not an employee. Hourly - overnights are calculated by sitting time until her bed time and from her wakeup time.
Timeclock is used for time in and time out. Pay is weekly.
Minimum Wage - $10/ hour depending on references, experience.

8) Overnight Daycare Needed (Wisconsin)
I am in need of overnight childcare for a 16 month old girl. it would be 3 nights a week and every other weekend from 7pm to 730am thehours I work. I prefer in my home and would consider if someone is looking for an apartment to have childcare instead of rent. you would have your own bed and bath and only thing i would ask would be to pay half the electric....rent is 885 and my electric bill is about 150 a month. I would also consider watching your child as a trade off to break even. I am a single mom so I cannot afford much. prior to my sitter just quitting on me I paid her 20 a night and also provided transportation for her as needed. please email if interested or what you would charge a night. aunteemissa@****

Angry Response From CL Reader:

12) RE: Need someone to watch my kids tonight (North Carolina)
This is one of the worst ads I have ever read and it makes me sick to my stomach that one would post an ad the day of wanting to go out and leaving their kids to complete strangers. This is how kids get abused, killed, sexually assaulted and much worse. References could come from any one and of course they are only going to bring the best references. I could go on but I won't. I feel EXTREMELY sorry and worried for your children and if I knew who you were I would call CPS. Your putting your children in great harm and it's sad that these innocent children who have no say at all are involved. I have done daycare for years and I find that parents who are so willing to just leave their kids with me minutes of meeting me have other concerns then their children and are not even worthy enough to have them. That's why I don't take them. If you went out I hope you had a good time and I sure hope you examine your children really good for any marks, etc... Just a reminder: 3 year old and 3 month olds can't speak well enough to tell you they are victim. There are also lots of woman pedophiles as well. SHAME ON YOU! Your poor children.

15) Live in Nanny Needed (Las Vegas)
I am a single professional mother of two. I'm seeking a fun, energetic, humorous individual (female) as a live in nanny.

Services needed are occasional laundry, cooking, shopping, cleaning, tutoring. Services needed all the time include: being home when my children go to school and come home from school, making sure they do their homework and chores, transportation to and from activities as needed, and most of all overnight care when I travel every-other week. I travel every other week usually on Mon & Tues to Vegas for work. Additionally I have 4 small dogs that require attention.

A little bit about myself and my children. I am a very outspoken woman who doesn't tolerate much. I am occasionally foul mouthed and sassy . . . ok, . . . I do have a foul mouth all the time! If you can't handle my type A personality, please don't bother to contact me. Having said that, I too have a great sense of humor as do my children. Were not the typical poster family. I don't preach religion in my house or politics for that matter and have no intention of diluting my children's minds with such nonsense, again if your a hard core fan of any type of religion, or find yourself discussing politics, you need not apply.

I am NOT looking for someone to discipline my children, I am looking for someone to live in my 3000 sq ft (4 bed, 3 full bath) home on a permanent basis to help me out because I'm losing my mind. I am not looking for someone to take my place, but I do need help filling in the gaps! I live in a great neighborhood, with plenty of things to do that surround my house. Its a quiet neighborhood, except for me occasionally rockin~ out having a beer while I'm cleaning or doing yard work. I will not tolerate drugs in my house, so if your the occasional user, again don't bother contacting me.

Salary: If your expecting to make a @#$* load of money off of me its not gonna happen, your getting free room and board in a kick *@$! house and will be living with a pretty cool woman and her two kids, having said that, you will be paid $500.00 per month in addition to your free room and board.

Basically you SHOULD contact me if you: don't preach religion, don't discuss politics, have a great sense of humor, are NOT a drug user, ARE 100% reliable (references and background check will be preformed), really enjoy being around kids and are not just reading this in hopes of landing a free pad.

P.S. (FYI) I can't handle pretentious women, so if your one, again you need not apply.

On that note! I truly look forward to meeting and discussing this opportunity with you in person. If you meet all of the conditions listed above without question, PLEASE contact me! (via email) Respectfully, Losing Her Mind.

16) Looking for an apartment? I am looking for a live in Nanny! (Illinois)
I have 2 children 4.5 and 2.5 years old Both of our kids are potty trained and nap in the afternoon. I am looking for a mother or woman who has childcare experience, can pass a background check, and has a reliable car with insurance to take care of my children and take my son to school. We have a 3 bedroom house and a full basement and we would be willing to hire someone who is looking for a place to live in exchange for FREE room and BOARD and PAID (discounted rates, since you will be living and eating here for free) daycare and light cleaning services. It is NOT necessary that you live here. If you have a children of your own they are welcome here as well. My son will be attending Madison Elementary (district #200) next fall and My daughter will be in some school program in the fall as well. If your child, or children are the same ages as ours we can sing them up for the same programs and we would be happy to pay for your kids as well as mine to attend. We would also pay for any extra circular activities that we agree upon for the kids.

We are in need of childcare Monday thru Friday and possibly some Saturdays mostly in the summer months only. Our work schedule is somewhat flexible if you would have to get a weekend job and we would be happy to care for your children for free on the weekends. We are thinking that the weekly rate Monday thru Friday would be approximately $200+ a week.(negotiable) If we work longer hours you would definitely make more money! We are looking to find an agreement and a family friend.....We are a reasonable family, that believes if you help us we will help and pay you accordingly to your effort!!!! .If this sounds like it might be a fit for you shoot me a email or give me a call #608-469-**** Thank you Kelly....

20) Childcare Needed (California)
Hello! I am a new mother planning on returning to work this June. My son is 6 months old(9 months in June) and needs care 8am-3pm mon-fri. He can be cared for at our home in capitola or yours depending on the location. He is a very calm easy baby to care for. Enjoys fresh air and walks to the beach.

We can only afford 125$ a week. I know it is not top pay for a nanny... Mabe a stay home mom who is looking to make a little side cash well looking after her own? Perhaps a student or someone who has experience with infants? Mabe someone who is already babysitting and would like to take on another infant. If you are interested and think you will be a good match, email me with some information about yourself and phone number. Thank you for your interest!

Angry Response From CL Readers:

21) RE: Childcare Needed (California)
What on earth is up with all of these parents who want nannies at daycare prices?
A nanny is a luxury. She makes life easy.
Unfortunately not many of us are in a position to have someone show up at our doorstep in the mornings to take over making life easy...hence...daycares.
Dear parent going back to work, please get up at 6, like the rest of us, and feed ,bath & dress your child...put him/her in their car seat and drive to the daycare of your choice.
I happen to know that Capitola & Santa Cruz both have several wonderful daycares who accept infants for just about $25-30.00 dollars more a week than you are offering a nanny.
You are offering $3.57 cents an hr. That is just an insult!
Most daycares run between $4-7 dollars an hr depending on the childs age.
URL: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/kid/2244800793.html

22) RE: Childcare Needed (California)
Attention! Parents! If you need childcare for your little one it doesn't matter how "easy going" , "low maintenance" or "well-behaved" your child is that determines how much you pay. You need to offer AT LEAST minuimum wage to even make this job desirable to the least qualified. This wage you are offering literally works out to a WHOPPING $3.57 and hour! Who would waste their time with this? An experienced Nanny gets anywhere from $10.00 (on the low end)-$20.00 an hour. If you can't afford this maybe you should look for an in-home daycare that has numerous other snotty nosed kids running around. And who will give your child a tenth of the attention that an in-home nanny could provide. TIP: Watsonville seems to have a lot of these really, really cheap daycares....hmmm wonder why? This really is just ridiculous...
URL: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/kid/2244860353.html

23) RE: Childcare Needed (California)
If you read the post she isn't asking for just an "experienced (overpaid) nanny" she is asking for someone to care for her child and giving that person the flexibility of making money while having their own children around. Why would you attack her for trying to find quality care for her baby? Some people simply cannot afford the prices that are being demanded by childcare providers. Besides, have you taken a look at the economy lately? People are getting pay cuts all over the place what makes you feel like a nanny is exempt from these times? Obviously, your demands are the reason you are still looking for a job. Cut her some slack...she is just trying to survive like you and I.
URL: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/kid/2244953950.html

24) RE: Childcare Needed (California)
To the person who posted the sympathetic post for the mommy looking for ft childcare for $3.57 p/HR.... its not about cutting someone slack..its about following the laws!!!! To hire a domestic staff(nanny or Full time childcare provider, babysitter) taxes must be claimed! Period end of story. If you advocate this woman hiring someone and not paying taxes on her wages...you are advocating her breaking the law!!

Do you really think anyone, even a nice SAHM who is kind enough to offer her time is going to claim taxes on $125.00 per week??? A weekend baby sitter does not usually claim taxes....that is actually legal...but a FT employee MUST pay taxes....even at 125 a week she will still be making over $5000 income wich must be leaglly taxed!! She needs to find a licensed daycare provider!! End of story!

Working Out Compensation for Gas and Mileage...

opinion 2 How many of you that are required to use your own vehicle to cart the kids around or run errands are compensated for gas? I drive the kids to and from at least a few times a week and I have never been compensated. I need to bring it up to my MB as the gas prices keep rising. I was just wondering how many of you guys are reimbursed for gas and if so, how much? Do you use the standard 51 cents a mile or do you figure it out some other way? Thanks!

7:25- Lay A down in his crib and turn on his Rockabye Baby Album. MB and DB own a couple albums. We rotate weekly between the No Doubt Album, the Bob Marley Album, and the Guns ‘N Roses Album.
7:30- Leave A’s room and start cleaning up. Wash the dishes that have built up over the day and get the dishwasher loaded. Walk throughout the house and gather up any laundry that needs to be washed. Make sure all of the animals are fed.
7:45- Go into my charges room and make sure that he has fallen asleep. Tuck him into bed being extra careful not to wake him.
7:55- Get a text message from either MB letting me know that they are on their way. They tell me that they will be picking up dinner on the way home and ask if I want anything.
8:10 - MB gets home and we spend the next hour talking about anything and everything.
9:10- DB gets home from work and I head home for the night.

Two Questions?

opinion 2 I have two questions: What do you all do when your charges are napping? Do you clean, wash/fold laundry, prepare meals......

My second question is.......what would you say are the average responsibilities of a nanny. What are things that would make a nanny be taken advantage of when it comes to housework?

To Employers in Colorado...

beware 3 I don't know if you can do anything, but I feel better knowing that I am making contact in hopes it might stop future abuse from happening. I live in Spring TX. I have a 4 year old son and an 8 year old son. From October 5 2009 until October 19th 2010, we had a nanny working for us. She was hired thru a nanny agency and was perfect for my boys. However, things changed and she was fired October 19th 2010 after I set up a camera and recorded 10 hours worth of video of this woman with my children. The video revealed this woman sleeping on the couch for hours and leaving my then 3 yr old son completely unattended, ignoring my children, screaming, yelling, name calling, spanking, lying to us about the events of the day and excusing herself to my bedroom to relieve herself of sexual frustrations. She was reported to the nanny service I hired her from, who removed her from their database and vowed never to list her again, and to Child Protective Services here in the Harris county area. The CPS worker that I filed the report with told me that the State of Texas could not file charges against her because she didn't physically leave the property and there was no bruising on my sons. They could however list on her background checks that she has been flagged as an abuser. He explained that this would prevent her from working with children again in a job that did a background check i.e. daycare centers, school districts, and nanny agencies and if by chance she was with any of those places already a random background check would also reveal this information and she would be fired. It wouldn't however prevent her from taking a job watching her neighbors kids where a background check might not be done. I felt I was able to protect some children from future abuse.

I recently found out she will be moving from Texas to Colorado and is looking to finish her early education degree and go back to working as a nanny or in a day care center until her education is complete. I contacted the CPS office again worried that more children might now be in danger. I was informed by Texas CPS, Child Care Licensing, and Background Department that this flag will not transfer from state to state. It needed to be criminal charges in order to prevent her from hurting anymore kids, which I was informed in December the State of Texas was not going to do.

I feel totally helpless here and want to warn everyone of this woman, Brittani H****, in hopes that should she apply with their agency, maybe just maybe they will refuse her. I know this could be looked at as just heresay, but I would want someone to inform me if they knew something that wouldn't show up on a background check. I don't know where in Colorado she is moving, just that she is moving in with her boyfriends sister in Colorado. I have her name and social security number as well as her TX Drivers License number, if it is needed. I hope some prevention of future child abuse can be done. Thank you.

Renegotiating Contracts: Snow Days, Sick Days and Vacations

opinion 2 I have an issue I'm not quite sure how to resolve. I have worked for my present family for almost a year (in early June.) I went through a reputable agency and we signed a contract. However, I'm not happy with how they have handled my sick/vacation leave and don't know what to do about it.

First, when I started last June, I was given 5 sick days and 10 days vacation (5 of which was supposed to be their choice - ie when they go on vacation - and 5 of my choice.) I had assumed those were valid for a year and would renew themselves again this June. Well I was told about a month ago that this was not the case and they are for the "calendar year" and I only had a pro-rated amount for last year. I don't get it, but ok.

Now, because I was unsure what days off I have left with this new system, I requested an update. Apparently, they are counting snow days as sick days (there were 2) which I think is completely unfair because there was no way I could get to work in those conditions and also the mother works for the government and both days there was a liberal leave policy where she was able to work from home, so it's not as if she couldn't work. They are also telling me that I only have 4 vacation days left for the entire year, so because of that, they are not going to pay me while they go on vacation (they have 3 upcoming trips scheduled - one of which I am going with them on and they are paying me my regular salary, no more, which is another issue.) Now I had explained to MB when I was interviewing (they are first time parents) that it is custom in the nanny industry that if they cancel for whatever reason (vacation, baby sick, etc) that I would still get paid and she agreed, however, that is not laid out in the contract.

I was planning on renegotiating my contract in June and asking for 2 weeks vacation of my choosing, because first of all, they are trying not to pay me now when they go on vacation and also because as mentioned above, I believe they should always pay me when they go on vacation, not just for 5 days a year (they travel a lot.) But now I'm unsure how that will even work since everything reset in January apparently.

So my questions are: do snow days count as sick days? And how should I approach them about paying me while they are on vacation and also renegotiating the contract? Thank you!

The Difference Between Nanny and Babysitter

guest column
By Nanny Megan
Let me just begin by saying that one of my biggest pet peeves is being referred to as the Babysitter.

It is quite often that I am asked by various people what I do for a living. My immediate response is that I am a Full-Time Nanny for a 20-month-old. After responding with this, the person usually responds with one of two answers.

The first, and most preferred: “Wow, a full-time nanny for a toddler, that must be a lot of work. How many hours do you work a day?”

The second: “Oh, so you’re a babysitter?” My response to this is to immediately read off the differences between a nanny and a babysitter.

When a Nanny is Employed: A nanny is regularly employed when parents have very little time to devote to the day-to-day needs of their children. This situation can most often arise when both parents have demanding jobs. A nanny is employed to spend time taking care of a child in every circumstance that arises when you are unavailable and at any time. This can be every weekday, prescribed weekends or evenings. The nanny is also the exclusive caregiver of your children outside of yourself.

When a Babysitter is Employed: A babysitter is employed on an as-needed basis. A babysitter is not hired to be on call to take care of the children exclusively on a daily and indefinite basis. When parents have a special outing planned, they usually call a babysitter to take care of their kids for two to several hours at a time. Parents who use babysitters typically have more than one phone number in the event that one babysitter is not available for the time they need her.

As a Nanny, I am with the child(ren) for more time than a babysitter would be. I am expected to know the child on an intimate level. I am given permission from both parents to discipline the children when they are misbehaving. I am responsible for planning activities on an ongoing basis.

A babysitter can participate in these activites too, but he/she does them for only a few hours at a time. Often, parents are more strict with a babysitter in terms of discipline, daily routine, and meal planning.

Saturday

6-6

a day in the life
5:45am: I'm almost running into the grocery store, I left the house late and to a panic of texts because we are running low on milk.

5:53am: Back in the car, I turn the radio all the way up and navigate the dark, empty streets.

6:01am: The car is parked and my boots are off. I put on water for tea.

6:05am: I read through the weekend log notes, smile that they tried out the audubon center I suggested.

6:09am: I put the dried sippy cups away and unload the dishwasher

6:21am: Mom updates me on the weekend and asks me about mine. I tell her about my date and the movie I saw. She seems genuinely interested, even in her rush. We discuss the plans for the day and I tell her to be careful with icey streets.

6:34am: The toys strewn around the living room don't take me long to pick up. I sort through our massive stack of books for the ones that need returned to the library.

6:51am: Dad recounts his version of the weekend and I warn him about the ice and tell him our plans for the day.

6:57am: Dad is out the door and I'm folding my way through a load of laundry. The house is quiet now, but Tiny (18 months and a chatter box) is starting to stir.

7:15am: I make a second cup of tea and get the morning milk cup warmed up.

7:19am: Tiny is up and greets me with a "howdoyoudo!". Her curly hair is wild, but she looks happy and laughs with me as I tickle her and lift her on to the changing table.

7:20am: The laughter is short lived and her giggles turn to loud, dramatic crying for her milk. I hand her the cup after a quick "say please!" and sing our days of the week song as I hurry to change her while she is occupied.

7:21am: When asked what day it is, Tiny answers Monday, as she does everyday. When I inform her that today she is correct, she is delighted and nearly wiggles off the table with glee.

7:23am: I have managed to tame her mane with a pony tail holder and a cute clip. She is busy brushing my hair.

7:25am: I jot down a note in our log and then Tiny and I walk around to all the windows, open the blinds, sing our weather song and make our weather observations and predictions. She loves snowy weather and we sing that verse over again.

7:31am: A neighbor and her dogs walk down the sidewalk. Tiny nearly loses it, running to the window, greeting the oblivious woman with barks, bow wows, hi's and hellos.

7:39am: Into her little purple chair she settles and we take turns picking book after book to read.

8:24am: Chasing Tiny around the living room, tickling her and spinning her around starts to make me dizzy, so I declare it breakfast time.

8:29am: Tiny plays with her babies (named only by the colors of their clothes) on the kitchen floor while I warm up extra french toast I froze last week and cut up a smorgasbord of fresh fruit. Occasional cries for berries or to buckle her baby in it's car seat slow me down, but Tiny waits patiently for the most part.

8:47am: We sit down for breakfast and it isn't long before she is covered in her yogurt. Self feeding is a goal, and that Mickey Mouse spoon is reaching it's intended target more and more often.

9:03am: I snap a picture of the food covered princess and send it to mom and dad with a quick note letting them know our day is off to a great start.

9:18am: We battle over hand and face washing after breakfast, but her joy is restored when she chooses to have her turn first brushing the four adorable teeth she has. I finish up and we head into the nursery to get dressed.

9:30am: Tiny picks a dress from her closet and is mesmerized by the twirling ballerina in her jewelery box while I find leggings and a onesie.

9:34am: Her love of clothes works to my advantage today, as she works to dress herself, pulling her arms in sleeves and chatting with me about the different colors of birds ( talk of purple and turquoise birds has her in stitches!).

9:42am: I recite Chicka Chicka Boom Boom while she flips through the book and I change her sheets and gather laundry up.

9:56am: In the laundry room she watches, awe struck, as I load the washer and turn it on. The water rushing over the window on the front loading machine becomes mesmerizing.

9:59am: I check the diaper bag to make sure it is ready to go (it isn't. I find a gross cup of old milk) Gathering coats, shoes, bags and books is easy as Tiny plays in her kitchen near me and brings me her tasty "salad", complete with cupcakes, corn flakes and a spoon.

10:02am: We dress for the weather and Tiny changes shoes, twice. We make it out the door and I text both mom and dad to let them know we are heading to the library for story time before we leave.

10:11am: Pulling in the parking lot, I hear squeals of "Again! Again! AGAIN!" for the three little kittens song and after I park I text mom and dad, announcing our arrival.

10:16am: Barely in time for the baby story time, we rush into the library. The librarian shoots me a dirty look as I remind Tiny to use her library voice (she is loudly expressing her excitement at our upcoming guinea pig watching opportunities). We take our time as Tiny climbs down the seemingly endless staircase, as I walk backward, holding both of her hands and praising every wobbly step.

10:18am: I'm bored by the lackluster librarian singing along with the cd and whisper about the books in Tiny's ear to keep her quiet and focused.

10:39am: The mom next to me is wowed by Tiny's verbal prowess and is shocked to hear my little vocabulary vixen isn't yet close to two. I wonder if she realizes I'm not mommy (it seems obvious, my light hair and skin and blue eyes are a contrast to Tiny's beautiful Indian complexion and rich brown hair and dark eyes).

10:51: I don't have long for my musings, as Tiny is at the door, begging to see her beloved "gummies" (babyspeak for the library pets).

11:20am: We have gotten our small animal fix, played at the train table, pretended with animal puppets, done a few puzzles together when I start my "bye bye countdown".

11:32am: Even though she had several warnings, when bye bye time comes, so does her (loud) frustration. I calm her with the script from a social story she loves and reward her self regulation and control with an elevator ride. I'm anticipating naptime already.

11:40am: We are both buckled in the car and the three little kittens song is again melting my brain when I text mom and dad to let then know we are heading home.

11:52am: The garage door closes and Tiny takes that as a sign to begin begging for her milk like she has never eaten before. I alert mom and dad to our arrival home.

12:04pm: We are finally settled in the rocking chair, with a cup of milk and a fresh diaper. I take a deep breath and remind myself that these quiet moments alone with her snuggled up on my arm are growing increasingly more valuable (little sister is on her way, Tiny proudly tells all who ask that new baby is coming in June). I try to relax into the moment, as she slowly fades into sleep and her eyes close.

12:26pm: I lay Tiny down in her crib and flip the monitor on. More water for tea, a lovely quiet moment to use the restroom (who knew finding 30 seconds for the bathroom would be so difficult?) and I pop a microwave lunch in to cook.

12:50pm: Kitchen tidied up from the breakfast (did a pint of blueberries explode in here?), laundry in the dryer. I text mom to tell her we are having a good day while I clean out the refrigerator.

1:17pm: Lesson planing for next week is done. I use a thematic preschool weekly program with her, next up, monkeys!

1:26pm: I wipe down counters and the table, lightly sweep the kitchen floor. Laundry is ready to fold, and I text with a friend while folding the little clothes.

1:59pm: I grab a handful of chips and go through the stack of catalogs that came over the weekend. I circle, star and tab the things we need (er...want...) and leave them on Mom's desk for approval.

2:13pm: I'll admit I'm tip toeing around the house and hoping for a three hour nap, I'm tired. I make coffee and pat myself on the back for remembering the peppermint mocha creamer at the grocery.

2:24pm: I start lunch when Tiny starts stirring.

2:40pm: It is a crabby Tiny I find when I go to get her up. She cries without giving reason and tries to kick while I change her. I sing, anything and everything I can think of until she finally calms during the counting to ten song.

2:45pm: In her high chair, I smooth the grumpies over with some cheese and broccoli. Tiny chatters away and I check our log book to see what activities are going on this afternoon.

2:53pm: A quick text to mom has a,trip to the indoor playground approved. And after she finishes, we change clothes, bundle back up and head again to the car.

3:28pm: She hasn't forgotten about the damned three little kittens song. I text parents to report our movement and we head out.

3:35pm: I can't take the kitten song anymore. I flip to the radio and the anguished screaming begins. I loudly point out things we are passing and talk about stop lights.

3:38pm: The screaming has turned back to amiable conversation, I'm smiling again.

3:43pm: I catch myself right before a string of loud, angry expletives come flying out of my mouth in an fit of road rage. She wants her cd back on, I give in and resign myself to a night full of nursery rhymes playing on repeat in my head.

3:51pm: At the indoor play ground, we check in with mom and dad before we check in at the desk. Tiny takes off and I'm following her around as she climbs, scoots and plays.

4:26pm: I try to avoid the basketball area, but Tiny is determined. Several unsupervised preschoolers lob the big balls, and one tries take a ball right out of her hands. I try to help her with the sharing, but the unruly 4 year old pushes me and runs. I look for her caregiver, but all I see is a woman with her ipad out. I'm out of luck.

4:31pm: I console a very disappointed Tiny, purposefully carrying her, shrieking "share share no no no!" on the edge of the court where ipad lady is standing. When she gives us a dirty look, I smile sweetly and say to Tiny, " Some children just don't know how to use their good manners."

4:40pm: Tiny says she wants to swing, so we walk over and I give her pushes while we sing and talk about butterflies and dogs. I start the goodbye count down.

4:53pm: Back in the car, I text mom and dad, start the cd from the top and contemplate the best way to avoid rush hour traffic. We head home, both of us quiet.

5:16pm: We beat both mom and dad home. When I tell her we are back, mom asks me to get dinner together for Tiny.

5:22pm: After a diaper change, I put Tiny in her high chair, text a friend to save me a seat at the bar, I'm happy hour ready.

5:29pm: I'm serving Tiny a quick dinner and writing in the log. I'm watching the clock, Tiny is telling "jokes" and saying all her favorite silly things.

5:35pm: She makes a hilarious face in response to me sticking out my tongue and I genuinely laugh out loud. Dad walks in the door and asks about our giggles. Together we share the highlights of our day with him.

5:37pm: Dad goes to take a shower and I return a text message. Tiny gets annoyed at my inattention and throws some edamame on the floor.

5:58pm: We transition quietly, as dad takes over the feeding and I straighten up a few things and finish the log.

6:01pm: Mom comes home and I fill her in on our day too. We chat for a few minutes. I want to keep talking, but my happy hour time is slowly ticking away.

6:11pm: I kiss the messy Tiny on the forehead, we say our special good bye and I'm headed out the door.

6:13pm: The garage door shuts and I change cds. I turn the music up,glad to be back in grown up world.

From My Side

a day in the life
8:00 serving breakfast in the kitchen to my two year old.
8:15 getting dressed while my two year old plays in the water in the bathroom and gets wet.
8:20 Call my trainer to let her know I will be late.
8:22 Nanny comes through the door. No excuse. Just a good morning.
8:23 I remind nanny "I have Chris at 9 now, so I really have to go" Nanny says "that's right, you changed it".
8:24 I leave to go to Chris's studio and workout.
10:10 I return home. Nanny is sitting on the floor of the living room reading the newspaper and eating cereal out of the box. 2yo is watching sponge bob on television. I suggest nicely that they go outside and play for a bit. Nanny tells me that 2yo "didn't want to" and she "thinks it's going to be just a hangout day". Her cell phone rings and she answers it.
10:15 I take 2yo and show him new outside bowling set. I get him excited about it. I suggest to the nanny he is ready to go outside. Nanny heaves self of floor, leaving paper on floor. Sets box of cereal on counter and heads outside without word or enthusiasm.
10:20 I am working in my studio.
12:15 The phone rings, I answer it. It's the nanny. She tells me that she got stuck in a long line at McDonalds and can I go outside and meet 4 yo's bus. I quickly wash paint off of my hands and face and hustle out to the bus stop. I greet my 4yo and bring him in the house. He asks about his brother. I tell him brother is on his way back. I make him a turkey sandwich with cucumbers on whole wheat. I sit down with him and have a cup of tea. He is talking to me about his day and eating his sandwich.
12:35 Nanny breezes in with large bag from McDonals. 2yo has barbecue sauce on his face even though I don't allow eating in the car. My 4yo who was now having a deser of mandarin oranges and plain yogurt is told by the nanny, "I didn't forget you" and she plunks down a 6 piece mcnugget in front of him as I say, "he already ate". I see an argument coming on so I excuse myself by informing the nanny I have a deadline to meet.
12:40 Working in studio
1:20 I go to the kitchen to get my cell phone which I set down. The boys must be asleep because nanny is sprawled out on the family room sofa. She has a diet coke sitting on the carpet next to the sofa. Her socks and shoes and bra are in a pile next to the sofa. I get my phone and return to the sofa.
3:00 I am busy working in the studio, but I want to make sure the boys are not still sleeping. I go to their rooms. They are still sleeping. I get them up, pottied and ready for their afternoons. I bring both boys down to the family room where nanny is now sitting staring at Jerry Springer. I ask, "can we turn that off" and what she plans to do this afternoon. She replies, "I don't know. Playdough?" She complains of a headache and asks for aspirin. I give her some ibuprofen. I ask if she is okay to handle things. I head back to the studio.
5:30 My husband comes home. He walks in and the boys are watching Scooby Doo eating saltines in the family room. He greets the kids and releases the nanny. He cleans the kitchen, vacuums the carpet (full of cereal and saltines). He puts away toys and hangs out with the kids.
6:00 I am done for the day and in the kitchen with the family. Husband shares with me about nanny and says "when are we going to find someone else?"

The Injured Nanny

opinion 2
Hello ISYN readers,
I have question to pose. Have any of you had to deal with working injured? I broke my ankle and I am trying to figure out how I can still work. I didn't break it at work, I did it in my own clumsy way. I nanny for twin girls-14 months old. I've been with them for 7 months, and I live out. I also only work MWF. They walk, so I really don't need to carry them all the time, but their cribs are upstairs, and they still nap twice a day.

Do you think it's possible for me to work? I have this coming week off, but I am going to need to figure something out come next week. Does anyone have any experience in a situation like this? Any advice/tricks you can give me?

Thanks for your help!

Seeking Alternative Discipline Methods?

guest column
by Nanny Deb
I have a few things I’ve tried over the years that succeeded nicely when I was at my wits end and didn’t have spanking as an option. Of course, the following may or may not work on the kids you care for, so try these at your own risk…

Young M., aged 4, had serious issues when it came to staying out of the street in front of her house. She would dash into the street, risking life and limb, when a ball rolled into the road, or when she saw someone to talk to across the street, or when she felt like investigating the “sparklies” she saw in the blacktop. Her parents were frustrated, and had told me any thoughts I had would be terrific.

Simple explanations of danger didn’t stop her. Strict voices and “nanny eyes” didn’t stop her. Yelling seemed to make her run faster, and keeping her on a long leash was kind of impractical overall. So what to do to keep my darling heedless charge from being flattened like a pancake by the teens who sped through the suburb going 45 mph or more in a 25 mph zone?

One day, after 3 darts into the road and 1 near miss, I took a few deep breaths, made sure my voice was calm, and told her to get one of her favorite toys from the house and bring it to me. When she returned with a large plastic horse, I told her she was going to get to see what happened when a car ran over something smaller than the car.

I strapped her and her older brother into their boosters, backed my car out of the driveway, and then got out and placed that plastic horse directly in the path of my right front tire. I got in, and said, “When I stop the car, you can get out and go get your horse. Remember, the horse will have been hit by my car…”

Vroom. CRUNCH. Coast and brake. Car off, M. and big brother hop out, and seek out the horse. M. sees her plastic horse, and she looks horrified for a moment before wailing, “It’s BROKEN!”

My response? “Yep. That’s what will happen to you if you keep running out in the street and a car hits you.”

There was a bit more wailing, some comforting hugs, and, best of all, a complete cure for the heedless dashes into potential death. The only downside was that big bother kept asking me to “kill” his toys for about a week.

My employers were a bit taken aback, but they said if crushing a toy kept their kid in one piece they were fine with my methods.

Next time, we’ll discuss the basic cure for pooping in underwear rather than a potty!

We want what we want

opinion 2
Question from a mom:
My full-time live-out nanny has been working for me for 5 months. However, beginning in late June, my children will be in camp full-time, so I will no longer need a nanny. I want to give her ample notice so that she can find a new position, but I am worried that giving her too much notice will just make things awkward and will make her likely to leave before we are ready. How much notice is enough? Any other advice? Thanks!

Clemijontri Park in McLean

bad nanny sighting
This was around 11:30 Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Clemijontri park in McLean. The nanny had what sounded like an English accent. She was black and very dark-complected. She was watching a girl who looked to be around 3 and had brown hair and really intense blue eyes (IIRC, she was wearing a blue and white coat) and a toddler boy with blond hair.

The nanny sat on a bench talking on her phone for a solid 20 minutes, and kept the kids right next to her. She was even holding on to the toddler. I was appalled! The two kids had to stand there right beside her instead of getting to play, and as soon as her phone call was done, they left. The kicker was that on the way out, the little girl was trailing behind and not once did the nanny look back to check if the girl was even following. She was on the phone for OVER 20 minutes. I don't KNOW she's the nanny, but in addition to the difference in appearance, she spoke with a distinct British-sounding accent, whereas the older girl was talking a lot and had no accent. I think the odds are high that this isn't their mom. Not 100%, but high.

Sunday

a day in the life
756 ring the doorbell
800 wonder if someone is going to answer the door
802 older sibling slowly saunters to the front door, has trouble unlocking the door and opening it
804 I am in and start up the stairs to free the youngest from his baby jail as it's referred to
805 open the youngest's bedroom door and am hit with the powerful smell of a dirty diaper, get him out of bed and lay him on the changing table and realize he's in the same diaper he was in when I left last night. This means a diaper rash and that he needs a bath
810 diaper is changed and baby is dressed, we head down the stairs so I can fix breakfast, I put him in his high chair and listen to him scream because he doesn't want to sit there
812 frozen waffles are ready and I hand a few to the youngest while calling to the oldest to come eat her breakfast, listen to her scream because she wants to watch tv with daddy. He caves and she stays in the bedroom with her parents
818 he sends her out with crocodile tears because she wants to watch tv, I remind her she needs to eat while ignoring the tears
819 remind her to sit down and eat
820 remind her to stop tormenting her brother and eat while looking all over the house for her blanket
821 remind her to eat while packing her backpack with her blanket and show and tell item
822 threaten to make her go to school naked if she doesnt hurry
825 finally finished feeding both and frantically trying to get the oldest dressed
826 still trying to get the oldest dressed
827 start fixing oldest kid's hair and listen to her cry because she wants an elaborate hairstyle and I dont have the time for anything but a ponytail
829 remind the oldest she needs shoes for school, listen to her whine while reminding her she cannot wear flip flops to school
830 mom comes out of the bedroom and she and oldest rush out the door to school and the youngest cries for mommy
835 the youngest has calmed down and is playing with his cars quietly in the living room while I throw a load of clothes in the washer and fold the clothes in the dryer
840 dad comes out of the bedroom in his boxer briefs and talks to the youngest and remarks that he just started saying dog the night before while I smile to myself and know that he started saying dog a week ago and I told them that then.

It Hurt Me More

Tuesday morning my mother sent me the following e-mail:

“My dear darling daughter Rebecca,
When I was 5 or 6 years old I wanted to go to a 4th of July parade up town in Pittsfield. My Mom did not drive or for that matter could not walk from where the car would be parked to the parade route. So my Daddy, who was very tired after a long workweek traveling said he would take me. But there were conditions. He was not going to the parade to buy junk, balloons, kewpie dolls, anything that was for sale as the parade passed by. The reason we were going was to see the parade. No food. No junk. If I asked for these things we would go home. Ok, I agreed, I wanted to see the parade. We drove up town, in the hot car, no air conditioning in 1949, thru traffic like the escape from Bosnia, parked in another state, walked to North Street the parade route. The parade came by, as did the junk sellers. I asked for a balloon. My Dad said, No and don’t ask again or we are going home. I asked for a Kewpie doll hanging off a pole with ribbons hanging down. I asked for everything that came by. My dad said, we are going home.

I began to cry, whine, throw myself around, fall down, scream, and moan.

We drove home in the hot car, thru traffic with people who were late to the parade and frantic to get there.

We got into the house and my Dad, red faced said, I told you no and I meant no. I continued to wail. He sat down, put me on his lap and gave me a spank on my fanny heard around the world.

I was shocked. I was sent to my room.

That was the one and only time my Dad ever spanked me.

Love, Mom.”

I have heard this story many times, as my wonderfully gentle Grandpa Max was so upset at spanking my Mother that he went to bed for the night, distraught. My Mom always told this story with laughter. She believed that she had acted terribly, had received a proper and just punishment, and that it had pretty much broken her father’s heart to discipline her with corporeal punishment. When I was a child, my mother spanked my brothers and I for our more serious crimes. There were degrees of severity in her spanking, from a simple swat of her hand to true “strapping” as my brothers and I called it; A licking with our father’s belt. I can remember a strapping from when I was about eight years old. I was waiting to receive my punishment and I was thinking, “I totally deserve this.” I suffered no mental distress from being spanked as a child; in fact, I respected my Mother as a disciplinary figure in my life and loved her enormously. I‘ve discussed with her over the years that if I had my own children I would definitely use spanking as a tool of discipline.

Well, she sent me the e-mail Tuesday morning in response to the anguished emergency e-mail I had sent her late Monday night in a flurry of guilt and remorse, as that afternoon, as a last resort after using up all of my other disciplinary tactics, I had spanked the four year old boy I nanny for. It was truly a last ditch effort to control an epic temper tantrum that was spinning out of control like a F-5 tornado in a trailer park. In the moment it felt like a sound judgment. I told him calmly that if he did not respond to my words, and he refused to cease screaming, I would have to spank him. He continued to scream. I put him over my knee and gave him one solid smack on his bottom. He stopped his fit immediately and tearfully sat on his bed, glaring at me. I gently closed his door and went downstairs, called his parents and told them exactly what had just happened.

His father asked, “What is he doing now?”

“Sitting on his bed quiet as a mouse.”

“Sounds like it worked.”

“I think it did.”

His mother said, “I don’t think I could ever spank him.”

I said, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t even ask you if it was okay.”

She said, “I don’t know how I feel about this but we’ll talk about it when I get home.”

And then I began to feel terrible. It does not matter that I love this child and he calls me “mommy number two”. It does not matter that I am, in fact, his Godmother, and would be responsible for raising him if anything happened to his parents. The truth is he is not my child. I did not make him. I am his nanny and his parent’s employee, and I had no right to spank him.

He was let out of his room for dinner and had calmed down considerably.

“Betta,” he said, “you spanked me and I did not like it. I think I am going to spank you back.”

His ten-year-old brother sat next to him, calmly eating his dinner. Deadpan he said,

“You can’t spank Betta unless you marry her.”

Later that night, after all the children were asleep, my mom boss came to my room and asked if she could talk to me. She told me that as far as she was concerned, these were my children too, and I was her co-parent, and that she trusted my judgment, and if I had felt that a spanking was the best way to control and diffuse the situation, she supported me on that. She told me that even the best parents often have no idea what they are doing with their children, and all we can do is try to live each day with a little grace.

I said that even when co-parenting, these things should be discussed first, and not done in the heat of the moment.

She countered that most parents don’t even do that, and I should not feel bad.

But I felt terrible.

In theory spanking seemed like a very solid way to discipline a child. In reality, I felt like my grandfather had, when he had spanked my mom. I wanted to get in bed and cry. I felt like I had broken my own heart. I felt like Sally Field in “Places in the Heart” where she gives a wuppin’ to her son Frank, because that is the way it has always been done and she thinks it’s the best way to discipline him, and she is so shaken by the experience that she cried to her tenant that she will never spank her child again.

And I wanted my very own blind John Malkovich to confide in, to tearfully explain that I thought I was doing the right thing, and it hurt me more than I ever could imagine, and I would never do it again.

Instead I e-mailed my Mom.

Many people in my life urged me not to write about this for the blog, but I thought it was an important issue for us to talk about together. As I told my beloved little four year old, I will only use words to discipline him in the future. There is no need for spanking. It’s just not worth it. And it’s just not me. I learned that this past week the hard way.

reader sbmission This is just an idea, but I was thinking about it today and thought you might like it, too! :) Why not do monthly (or more/less often) nanny "interviews" or parent "interviews" and let both sides share a little bit about what it's like to be in a nanny/employer relationship?

As a nanny, I'd love to read about how other nannies carry out their day, and I know a lot of parents who have approached me and said things along the lines of "I'm really interested in having a nanny, but I don't know what would be expected of me, them, how to get started, etc."

Some things I'd love to hear about from other nannies are best and worst "nanny" moments, a favorite/good craft or activity to do with kids (various ages) on rainy days, cold days, etc, favorite discipline/behavior method or trick, background on how they found their family, their relationship with their employers, etc.

Anyway, just wanted to pass this along. :) Hope you have a great day!

Book Marks Story Time in the Northpark Mall in Dallas, TX

alert Hi, I am a nanny here in the great state of Texas, Dallas Texas to be exact. I have been a nanny for more than 15 years and recently I have been attending Book Marks Story Time in the Northpark Mall in Dallas. First, let me start by saying the story time is great, if you or your nanny are able to take the children, you should, it's fun, interesting and educational. Or at least it's meant to be for those who are in tune with their children and those in their care.

Now, for the meat of my story! I am not very familiar with Latino nannies, but, since I have moved here to Dallas I am getting a first hand look into the daily lives of these nannies and the children who are left in their care. Today, March 30, 2011, my charge and I arrived at Northpark at 10:00 a.m. which we normally do each Wednesday. As usual I noticed the several groups of Latino/Hispanic nannies arriving with their charges in tow. What is so odd about this you might ask, well they all show up, they remove the children from the strollers and then they walk off to the outer areas of the group where they carry on conversations, text, talk on phones, read books, do everything except for what they need to be doing. They totally turn off any resemblance of being a nanny or child care provider.

Today was oddly a little more chaotic than normal because today the Critter Man was at the mall with real live animals. Interesting you think? Well, of course it was interesting, very interesting that there were 10 children standing in front of Critter Man who were asked no less than 20 times to sit down and move back. These animals were snakes, lizards, turtles, you know, things with teeth, animals that bite! There were children as young as 12 months wandering around in front of the Critter Man alone, no one was watching, no one cared that he was concerned for their safety and concerned that the other children who were being attended to could not see because of these out of control children. One little girl fell, hit the back of her head on the hard tile floor, do you think the nanny saw what happened? Nope! Do you think the nanny could hear the distinct cry of a child who was injured? Nope! No one came, no one heard until finally one of the other Moms in the group picked up the child. Same thing happened all during the presentation, other adults had to move children, sit children down, entertain children who were NOT being attended to by their nannies.

How do I know these are nannies you might ask, well, I have been a nanny for more than 15 years and let me tell you, I know a nanny when I see one, and, I know a good one from a bad one. I even witnessed one nanny bullying her charge. The little girl wanted so badly to hold onto a handle on the parachute that was out for play, she kept grabbing for it and her nanny kept pulling her hand off and then raising the parachute handle out of her reach and she would smile, like it was funny, like it was amusing to her that the little girl wanted nothing more than her Mommy or Daddy, someone to help her. It is scary, unsettling, upsetting and really makes my blood boil.

What is one to do? Can I help these children? Can I help these families and their nannies? I think I can, I want the word out there, I want parents to know what is going on when your most prized possession is out for the day with the person you hired to care for them, love them and educate them, but most of all, don't you want your nanny to love your child as much as you do? Don't you want your nanny to teach your child right from wrong, love and trust?

Here is what I would like ALL of you parents to do. I want you all to take a break from your busy schedule one day, I want you to come to Northpark Mall and come in thru the upstairs level, you know above the Park Central where story time takes place. Come in, have a seat up there, get your eye on your nanny and your child and then see if you think you are making the best decision for your family. I know it's appealing to hire a nanny who works for a mere $8 an hour and she will clean, cook, run errands and take care of your children, but really, is it worth it?

I know first hand, I am a mother to a 6 year old and a nanny to a 2 year old and a 5 year old. When my charges grow up, they will look back and know I cared for them as I would have cared for my own child because I have had the education and experience to do so. Are you going to sit back and let this continue? I urge you, take a break and watch one day, you will be surprised at the lack care you are paying for!

Lane Road library in Upper Arlington, Ohio

bad nanny sighting This morning at the Lane Road library in Upper Arlington, Ohio, I saw a nanny with two young boys, J (around 18 months) and E (around 3). The boys had dark curly hair and dark eyes. The nanny was tall, a red head and wore a black fleece jacket. They walked in right as story time was starting and were taking off coats and hats near my charge and I. The nanny was rough with both of them, pulling their arms and even saying to E, "(cut it out or)...I'll bust you up." E even repeated his words to himself.

After story time, she ignored her charge as he repeatedly took other children's toys, pushed and climbed over me and a very pregnant mom, who he kicked quite hard in his attempt. The mom and I tried to gently help our respective toddlers with him, but the nanny never looked up. She had them dressed back in coats and hats while they played, and sweated, for about 20 minutes.

How Should Nanny Give Notice?

opinion 2 Question about how to give notice: I have been working for this family for 10 months now, infant twins. Up until a two months ago, things were pretty great - I was feeling like a valued part of the family, and there was a great friendly rapport between the three of us. An instance occurred where they had to change my hours starting the next week, something I had no idea was even possibly going to happen, and something that would affect me significantly.

Long story short, the subsequent conversations got emotional, on both ends, and I was told repeatedly that I am the employee and that means they get to tell me when they need me and what to do while I'm in their employ (meaning housework beyond child related duties) no matter what we originally agreed upon. This obviously rubbed me the wrong way and I have been trying to get up the courage to figure out how to leave them since then.

I would like to make April my last month with them, and am trying to decide how to tell them, when to tell them, and how much notice to give.

I do not believe they will act out toward me, but in reading the other stories like this, I'm scared to give them too much notice. This Friday is payday and I plan to tell the mom that day after my shift, in person. Or, I could wait until the next payday, which will give them two weeks notice. The other option would be to send an email once I get home after my shift and not do it in person, but I feel this would be strange in our situation...

I know they will press me for details about why I am leaving. I'm planning to just say that it is too much for me physically anymore (because it actually really is - I have some physical issues which have been exacerbated since starting this job, and I'm not going to get another nanny job, I have a small business that I am building which will support me) and reassure them repeatedly that it has nothing to do with anything else, even though in reality it really does...

So, what are your thoughts and suggestions? Thanks!!!

Woman Accused of Locking 3 Kids Inside Car in Roxbury

in the news ROXBURY, Mass. -- A woman in Roxbury is accused of locking three young children in a car.

Boston police say they found witnesses crying out of helplessness when they arrived at a blue minivan in a Roxbury shopping center parking lot.

Inside the vehicle were two 1-year-old girls and a 3-year-old boy. They were sweating profusely, their faces were red and they were hot to the touch. Police say they had been locked up in the car for at least 35 minutes.

“We look in the car and there was three infants in the car, so we said, ‘Where’s the mom?’ Nobody knew,” said Maria Gonzales, witness.

Witnesses called Boston police while an announcement echoed inside some of the stores.

“Asking who was the owner of the blue van - but they didn’t explain anything, they just left,” said Nilo Gomez, witness.

“And the next thing you know she came out,” said Gonzales. “I asked her myself, I said, ‘Can you open your door so the kids can breathe?’ So she opened the door.”

Police removed the children to a Boston EMS ambulance while they questioned 35-year-old Nicole Burton, who they identified as the nanny of the children.

Witnesses say she had been shopping inside the Hair & Gold store.

“I said to myself, ‘That must not be their mom.’ Because moms wouldn’t do that to their babies,” said Gonzales.

Burton talked on her cell phone as two Boston police officers placed her under arrest.

She has been charged with abuse, neglect of a child risking bodily injury.

“It’s sad. You go to work thinking your kids are okay but then you don’t know what’s happening with these people watching your kids these days,” said Gonzales. “That’s very, very sad.”

Police say the children were released to their father and the case has been referred to the Department of Children and Families.
