A Taxing Situation in Canada

OPINION
I began working for my current family in 2009, when I started working for this family and we discussed pay and taxes I stated that I wanted to make $15.00 per hour which in the nanny-world I was assuming is take home or net pay. When the first tax season came around, I asked them about taxes and they replied "don't worry about it". That being stated I still claimed a partial portion of my pay to avoid issues. They then claimed this same portion and that was that. One of the employer's did mention that in our contract it was stated that I would pay my own taxes, I simply ignored this comment and went with the "don't worry about it" from the male employer. I ended up paying out just over $1000.00 The following year, I told them I would be claiming X-amount, and then they also claimed X-amount and it was fine. Nothing else about it was brought up. I claimed about half of my income and paid on that portion. I ended up paying out around $2,500.

This tax season came around, and since nothing was talked about prior, I assumed we would carry on the same deal that we have been doing this whole time when I pay on a portion that I can afford. However, when I told my boss the number that I had selected he seemed upset but did not say anything further about it. I ended up claiming a larger portion and I paid out around $3220.00. My employer stated to me, that starting right away, I would need to claim the actual number I make for the next tax season. Claiming the real number would result in me paying out $7,000 in taxes at the end of the year! This "change of plans" will alter my current take-home income from $2835.00 a month to $2235.00 a month. This means that on an hourly basis I will make $12.69/hr compared to my prior $16.10/hr. Which for me is a huge hike! On top of that they want me to claim my own taxes which means that I would have to save [on my own] the amount owing at the end of the year, rather than have my employer dock it from every pay check. In my opinion this means that my employer is getting away with a lot as they aren't having to pay on my portion at all as they are considering me a self-employed person.

I am not really sure how to approach this situation, on one hand I feel that I should "let it go" and pay taxes for the year as requested as I have got off without doing so proper for two years prior and thus saved money. Also the child will be starting school in the Fall (half-days) and I do not think that my employer will be altering pay thus, I will be getting paid three hours per day to essentially stay home. (I think that this is true as currently the child does go to a preschool where we have this arrangement currently and will just keep it when JK starts). My daily responsibilities are to care for the child, clean the child's area of the house, child laundry, cooking, grocery, errands, party plan, etc. I do it all. Also, I work for a single father which often results in myself getting overwhelmed with his messes and cleaning his clothes, and messes around the house as well at no extra pay. I have been doing this for three years so its kind of a self-assumed duty, as otherwise I cannot work such unclean conditions.

Please note: - Contract renegotiations are coming August 31st, 2012. - I reside in Canada, and thus U.S nanny-tax laws do not apply to me. - I have ten years experience, and three years with this particular family. - Over the past year I have been through a lot of issues with the child's non-custodial parent which has caused a lot of stress and even court related incidents. - I take care of one child - My employer provides me with a car for work and personal use (I take it home), the gas for the car (work week only), the insurance, and all car repairs, and toll charges. - I have a great relationship with the family. - I am planning on leaving this family September 2013 to go back to school full time.

My questions are: 1. Do you think that I should "suck it up" and just take the hit in pay for one year? 2. Do you think that I should ask for a net pay of $15.00/hr going forward in my new contract? 3. If you were my employer would you be upset at my new request, and look for a cheaper nanny with less needs? Any other advice would be much appreciated, however, please do not reply with "you should be paying taxes, or serves you right etc" I am looking for advice, not judgments. Thanks, From: Northern Nanny.

Superiority Complex

RANT-1
I often see on this blog nannies with more experience criticizing their young counterpart for not standing up for themselves. While I advocate nannies standing up for fair pay and treatment, I feel there is a sense of entitlement among the younger generation of nannies. They have a list as long as the Nile of things they will not do, they think they are equal to (or better than) the parent in the eyes of the child. They demand high paying salaries and expect to do little work. They think to have the right to do as they wish with a child that is not their own. I also see a lack of professionalism in this newer crop. They want to be friends with their employers or be treated as family. They want to be able to eat what they like, go where they please during work hours, and be on their phone or computer as much as they please. They wave around their advanced degrees and certificates demanding higher pay, but behave as though they are a favorite aunt or teenage babysitter. I could go on, but I think I’ve made my point. These same nannies then go and complain about the lack of respect nannies receive. I say look in the mirror you are the cause.

Ulterior Motives?

OPINION
I can't figure out why my nanny would even inquire about this, I had to ask. I'm a medical professional, and I work at a teaching hospital. I do not inquire too much about my nanny's personal life. Whatever she wants to tell me, she does. She's been with us for a few months. Shy of 3. I guess she has a nanny friend who's parents insist she bring the baby to their work. They are second year residents. The Mom encourages lunch if they are near the hospital or on a whim will plan it. My nanny suggested maybe I should consider meeting up with them for lunch and I assume maybe I should stop by our place and meet them somewhere near. But she quickly clarified and stated, "No, I mean we come to you"! I didn't know what to say except tell her that it was a good idea and I had to think about it, figure our schedule. Then it dawned on me. Why would my nanny be so eager to meet me for lunch at MY job? I remember at some point when she started, she had mentioned how a friend of hers works where I work at, and it was a guy. I do not know if they have a history together but she seemed eager about him. She hasn't divulged anything else on him, it was in passing she mentioned this. I don't want to be rude, of course I want to see my child BUT is this request weird ? I could stop by for lunch but she insisted they come to me. Why would she want to be subjected to gross hospital food? - Confused MB

Reasonable or Ridiculous?

OPINION
What are reasonable duties for a nanny? I'm not asking for household cleaning, cooking or laundry. All I am asking is for day to day childcare, meaning: feeding, clothing, bathing and putting to bed when needed, cleaning dishes used during the day, keeping the areas used by the kids clean or helping them to clean and the kids laundry. I've spoken with many nannies and several have told me they do not do laundry. Am I wrong for requesting this? The job is 40 hours a week never starting earlier than 9am or ending later than 7pm. The kids are 5 and 15 months. The 5 year old will be in school part time in the fall and the 15 month old naps 2.5 hours a day. We're offerring full benefits and a good wage for the area. We will keep looking, but I want to know if what we're asking for is ridiculous.

Road Mode

OPINION
Which would you prefer for on the job transport: 1. a car to use only during working hours with the kids with a gas card 2. your car and compensated for mileage 3. your car mileage compensation and a gas card for work hours.

5 Phrases to Use with Caution Around Your Nanny

GUEST COLUMNSubmitted by Debbie Denard                    nanny.net
Photobucket
The key to a successful nanny and employer relationship is open and honest communication. While nannies and parents should be able to communicate effectively about all aspects of the job, there are some phrases that employers should use with caution when speaking with or about their nanny.

These include:
1. Light housekeeping. Light housekeeping means different things to different people. To nannies, light housekeeping typically means cleaning up after the children and keeping the children’s areas, including their bedrooms, play areas and bathroom, clean, neat, and organized. It also generally includes doing all of the children’s laundry and putting it away. This vague phrase is the source of both confusion and contention in the nanny-employer relationship. Clarifying the specific tasks and duties that relate to light housekeeping responsibilities will ensure that both the nanny and the employer are on the same page and that the nanny completely understands her employer’s expectations. While many nannies are willing to take on additional housekeeping tasks for additional compensation, it’s important to make that agreement in advance to allow extra time for those duties to be done and to reaffirm that the children are the nanny’s first priority.
2. You need to stay late. While most nannies are willing to be accommodating and flexible, when they are presented with this directive, rather than a request, it conveys the message that their time isn’t seen as valuable. As an employer, parents are within their grounds to give directives, however when asking for something outside of the agreed upon duties and expectations, asking instead of telling will go a long way in making your nanny feel valued and respected. The reality is that sometimes things do come up that cause parents to run late and most nannies understand this. Nannies also know that they can’t leave work until the parents return home. Being apologetic and taking responsibility for not being home at the agreed upon time, letting your nanny know that you appreciate her for staying late, and compensating her for the additional time she’ll be working is good practice to follow to maintain a healthy relationship.
3. Your salary. One of the most trouble causing phrases in the nanny employer relationship is “your salary.” Typically problems arise when this phrase is used because the clarification of if the salary is gross salary (before taxes) or net salary (after taxes) has not been made. When speaking in terms of salary, it is always important that both the nanny and parents are clear on if they are speaking in gross or net terms. The difference in gross and net nanny salary is significant enough that it could result in a demise of the working relationship. If a nanny thinks she is earning $800 per week and her first paycheck is for much less, she’s not going to be happy. Likewise, if a parent believes she secured the perfect nanny for $600 per week, only to learn later that $600 was the salary which the nanny expected to take home, the parents may no longer be able to afford the nanny they want.
4. My babysitter. When it comes to childcare terms, nannies are generally sensitive about being misclassified. Calling your nanny a babysitter, especially in front of others, will likely be perceived as an insult. If your nanny views herself as a dedicated part of your parenting team, reducing her role to one that provides only custodial care (simply keeping the children safe when you aren’t home generally on an informal or occasional basis) will convey that her work and contributions aren’t valued. While all child care providers play an important role in the lives of the children they care for, most nannies want their employers and others to understand and validate the unique role they play in the lives of families.
5. My nanny won’t mind. While chances are your nanny really won’t mind doing what you have planned for her, assuming that she won’t mind, rather than asking her if she does or not, can lead to trouble. Many times nanny employers will volunteer their nanny to care for a family member or friend’s children while they are visiting. Even if your nanny won’t mind, she’s going to care about the logistics. If transportation is going to be needed for the children, for example, your nanny will want to ensure she has the proper seating. If she feels uncomfortable caring for a large number of children she doesn’t know well, you’ll want to know that. If you do ask your nanny to go above and beyond her typical duties, you’ll also want to compensate her for it.
Developing a mutually respectful relationship with your nanny will promote feelings of trust and security. Being aware of and avoiding phrases that can spark contention will help facilitate a good working relationship.

Underpaid and Overdue for a Raise

OPINION
I am a FT Nanny (over 50hrs a week) and have been with a family in Cleveland, OH for almost a year now caring for their toddler. I make $10/hr and also help around the house. (Childs laundry, bedding, Parents laundry, Dishwasher, Sweeping, etc.) I have also potty trained her. I agreed to this rate because I had no prior experience with toddlers. I worked with my last family for a little over 2yrs and the children were school age. I have over 3yrs of paid Nanny experience. Is it reasonable to ask for a raise? And for how much? I have been looking off and on for a new job. I love my job and this child but I feel like I could be making more and with less hours. Help!

Negotiating a Night Nanny

OPINION
Just a question for your community about finding, training, and paying an overnight nanny. My kids are 3.5 and almost 2. We have a handful of events coming up this late summer/fall that we'd like to leave the kids overnight. We already employ a nanny who would watch the kids during waking hours, but I wanted to find someone to do the overnight shift....so 6pm to 8am or so. My kids sleep 7pm to 6am and 90% of the time stay in bed without a peep all night although sometimes my 3.5 year old wants to go potty around 4am.

What would be a fair rate to pay someone who will put them to bed, stay over at our house, get up with them in the morning, and give them breakfast? I don't want to be cheap, but I have a hard time paying my usual $15-$18/hr when 11 hours of the work is when the kids are sleeping. Would a flat rate be fair? (We live in Seattle, WA). Also, wondering if people have any suggestions where to find someone...care or sitter city? What about training/trial period?

XOXO

OPINION
To all you nannies out there, do you tell your charges "I love you"? If not, why? To all you MBs out there. what are your feelings on this issue? Would you prefer your nanny to say it or not? Why or why not?

I'd love to start meeting/interviewing people tomorrow. Thanks! ETA: Must be available Saturdays. I work every Saturday, you would have the one off when she is gone. Please reply with your location. I drive from the medical center to the quarry area for work, would like someone near that drive if at your home.

Evening Transitioning

OPINION
Hello all, I recently discovered ISYN, and I'm loving it, thank God for iPhone, I've been reading nonstop since last week when I stumbled upon this site. I'm a nanny for a fantastic family, MB is a SAHM, and DB is in the medical field. Two awesome charges SW is 4 and LT is 2. Been with them for almost two years now.

Anyways, I'm writing to see if anyone has some suggestions for the issue we've been having with SW. He's a wonderful, caring, and smart little dude, and though sometimes he has trouble listening, he is generally a well behaved and great little charge. Lately though, for the last three months at least, my leaving in the evenings has become a big hassle. I spend anywhere from 8 to 12 hours a day five or six days a week with them, and sometimes MB is home, but works in her office, generally, I am the main caretaker during the day, until DB gets home, or until MB finishes her days work.

So, lately, whenever I leave the house in the evening SW throws a big fit, clinging to my legs, crying and reaching for me, screaming and sometimes even following me out to my car and refusing to go inside, or to let us close the door. MB and DB are great about it, they know that SW just loves his nanny, and that theres a strong bond between the babies and myself after almost two years, so the problem isn't that the parents are jealous or resentful. I just need suggestions on a more peaceful way to transition SW back into his parents care in the evenings, as its getting tiresome for all parties to console him every evening.

I know that once I leave, he generally gets over his fit in ten or fifteen minutes. I've tried reminding him about what fun things we'll do in the mornings when I return, or leaving him with a small treat (a mint, or small candy), or having a fun activity for him and DB/MB to work on, even just ignoring him and leaving in the middle of the tantrum (which killed me, I don't want him to associate me with feeling upset). Does anyone have experience with this or suggestions on a good way to ease into our evenings? I need to figure it out quick, as now LT is beginning to do the same things when she sees how big brother is acting. Thanks in advance, and Happy 4th to everyone!

Nanny knew Spouse was a Louse

OPINION
I thought i would pose this question on here to see if the responses match the responses I got on a mom site: Would you fire your long term nanny if you found out she knew your spouse was cheating and didn't tell you? To be clear the nanny isn't sleeping with the spouse, she just happens to know that your spouse is cheating on you.

Too Close for Comfort?

OPINION
I am just wodering what everyones opinion is on how close it is appropriate to get to the children/family that you work for. I am a Nanny and I feel as though I have a close enough relationship but I certainly don't think these are my kids. A friend if mine is so in love with her Nanny family. She goes to the toilet in front of the kids, tells them she loves them and they tell her all the time that they love her. She has a credit card from the family and uses it on the weekend to buy the kids clothes and things that she sees. She is always thinking about them and talking about them.

When I leave work I leave work and honestly do not have a second thought about the kids clothing needs etc.  My friend also earns almost $10 more an hour than I do and I feel as though she is over paid just simply because she is so close with them and they will do anything to keep her. She has worked there for 4 years and has seen 2 babies born while there. The mother will call her when the kids do something new like walk or say things and she takes the call and they celebrate together! She gives the parents all kinds of advice, decides the weeks menu and family outings which she goes along on sometimes. She even knows mostly the ins and outs of their finances. Am I just being weird or is she just too close??

Fair Rate in Rhode Island for Twin Care

OPINION
I've noticed there are a few Rhode Island area nannies that post here. My husband and I are seeking care for our twin boys that will be just shy of 4 months old when the job starts. We are seeking a nanny with at least 4 years of experience including infants, and preference for someone with prior twin experience. My question is, would $400 take home weekly be a fair rate? If not, what would you suggest?

Naughty Potty

OPINION
I am a live-in nanny for a 2 year old little girl (terrible twos.....ugh) who will literally refuse a diaper change. Whenever I try to change her she hits and kicks me, scratches me, spits on me, etc. I've tried everything from giving her a toy to distract her with, offering to change her standing up, I even tried a reward system with her where she gets a sticker everytime she lets me change her and nothing is working! I know that she isn't ready to be potty trained yet because I have even tried to potty train her and she shows absolutely no interest and refuses to go on the potty too. Basically what I (and her parents) do now is force her to lay down and let me change her, but with all the hitting, kicking, etc this can take up to a whole half hour and i don't know how much longer I can keep on doing that. By allowing her to hit and kick me while I change her isn't really teaching her anything! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Permission to Castigate

OPINION
I did something I'm abit ashamed of this morning, I lost my temper and smacked my 2yo charge real hard on the backend (discipline are usually time-outs although I once saw DB spank her). Its already starting to show a deep red mark and little welts right between where my fingers hit. I was trying to give her a bath and she started acting up and screaming. I don't think she's old enough to relay back to MB what happened but I'm not sure how to explain this should MB notice when she gets home this evening. I feel bad but think part of my anger is from resentment, the kid doesn't listen, ever. MB works alot and when she's here spoils the kid. I'm not trying to make excuses for what I did- but now I'm worried I could get fired. Any advice? What should I say or do, will an icepak help?

Standard Rate and Raise Schedule Needed

OPINION
What is the standard raise schedule for a nanny? Also what is the standard rate? Our nanny will have been with us 6 months in September. She is a good nanny and takes great of our boys. We started her off a bit low for a nanny caring for two young childen. It wasn't our intention, we are new to having a nanny, our first child went to daycare. Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

1) Sitter needed this Sunday - (Chicago) Hi there, I'm looking for a sitter for my 3 year son on Sunday, June 1st. We live in Irving Park and would prefer to have him play at your place for the day, if you are north or west of here (particularly if you're along the 90) on my way towards the ohare area. I will need someone from about 640am til 4pm. I can only pay 30 dollars which I understand isn't fabulous but would be ideal for a stay at home mom who will be awake at that awful hour anyway and could use the extra cash. If you're interested, please shoot me an email with a little bit about yourself, including your location and childcare experience. Thanks, Mary.

4) Part-Time Babysitter Needed ASAP! - (Meridian, Mississippi) I am a 24 year old single mom seeking someone to care for my 5 year old son on the weekend. My work schedule is Saturday through Wednesday from 7am to 3:25pm. This job will last until October, 2012 or longer, depending on my work schedule. My son is not in a daycare facility just yet, but I plan to make a decision soon. He will start kindergarten in August. My son is very independent, well-mannered and plays well with others. He enjoys both indoor and outdoor enviorments. One of his favorite activities is watching cartoon. In addition, I'm sure anyone will enjoy his company. I am seeking a very responsible, mature, individual to take care of my child. Must have experience in childcare. I would prefer this individual to have children, but this is not a requirement. 7) Live-in Nanny - Perfect for College or Grad Student - (Chicago) Hi there! Firstly, I would like to thank you in advance for your interest in this position. But, please know ... BEFORE YOU APPLY FOR THIS POSITION OR DECIDE TO EMAIL ME, PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE FOLLOWING: My name is Franz, and my fiancée Marie and I just moved from South Florida to Chicago a few weeks ago. We are now living in the Oak Lawn area in a comfortable single family home. We are both recently graduated physicians about to begin our residency training here in the Chicago area and we are seeking a nanny to care for our beautiful 14 month old baby boy named Aiden. We are looking for someone with experience taking care of a toddler of his age group: someone that is patient, trustworthy, responsible, honest and kind as well as an individual that we feel as though would be a right fit for our family. My fiancée and I will be starting new positions in 2 different hospitals in the Chicago area. Our careers are very demanding and our schedules are very often unpredictable.

With that being said, there will be times when we need to be at the hospitals as early as 5:30am and will get home as late as 7 or 8pm. As such, there will be times when we are unable to get Aiden ready for daycare and there will be times when we are unable to pick him up. Our shifts at the hospital can range anywhere from 10-16 hrs a day depending on the month. There will also be times when we are "on-call" and would need to spend the night at the hospital if necessary. What we are looking for is someone who can get Aiden ready in the morning, drop him off at daycare by 8:30am and be available to pick him up by 5:30pm Monday through Friday. Your job would also entail feeding him dinner when he gets home, bathing him and getting him ready for bed, etc., in the event that we are not home as yet. This would only be a couple of hours in the evening at the most and maybe an hour or so in the mornings. Meanwhile, you would have the rest of the day to go to school, study or work etc, or do whatever you desire, as long as that did not interfere with your responsibilities concerning him. The weekends would be the only time you may need to work a full day, ONLY in the event that we are both working that day, and if there was a time where BOTH of us were on overnight call then you would need to take care of him during that time as well.

IN EXCHANGE FOR YOUR NANNY SERVICES we will be offering free housing, free gas and electric and free cable and internet. Your only bills would be your personal bills like your cell phone, gas etc. Thus, you would be saving anywhere from $800-$1000/month in rent and utilities. We can also try to help out with some pocket money for gas etc if necessary. This is a unique opportunity to live rent free in a loving home, with a wonderful laid-back, fun, young family and spend time with one of the most beautiful little boys ever. We are currently living in a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom single family home in the Oak Lawn area - approx 30 minutes from the city. You will have your own room, which comes furnished (if you want) and you will have also have your own bathroom. You MUST HAVE your own reliable transportation to drop/pick up Aiden from daycare, which is only located 1 mile away from our house. We also have 2 small dogs under 20 lbs, so we would like someone who is accustomed to dealing with pets. If you have read this far and you are still interested, then please contact me with your name, age and experience. Please know that this is concerning our son, so we will be very strict with our search. You will need to provide references and must have a clean criminal record. Pictures and more infomation are readily available upon request and all emails will be answered promptly. I sincerely thank you for your time and we truly look forward to hearing from you! _______________________________________________________

8) Childcare Needed Immediately-Interview today and start tomorrow - (Northern RI) I need a nanny for at least the next 2 1/2 weeks, possibly longer. It is a lot of hours: 6am to 830pm on Mon and Tues and 7:50am to 10:30pm on Wed and Thurs 7am to 8pm (sometimes earlier) on Friday. Pay is $75/day paid bi-weekly, typically. The reason it is short-term is that I have been doing this since Jan since my divorce and have found an at-home position where I won't need full time help, but part-time after July 23rd is an option if interested. If you are just looking for a temp assignment and can be here on time and show up every day and give love and care to three beautiful children age 5, 9, and 10 that is fine also. I had major problems with the last person I had being late causing me to be late to get to Boston b/c the busses and trains run on a very tight schedule. If you are ten minutes late, I am two hours late. There were also 6 call-outs in five months including one today. She was great with the children, but I also need reliability. I do have a child with a fatal tree nut allergy which means caregiver has to be extra vigilant and responsible and not be afraid to use an epi-pen if necessary (we have never had to use it). Light chores like preparing meals (pasta/sandwiches are fine) and washing a few dishes afterwards are necessary, but not much more than that. Please call or email asap if serious and can commit to hours listed. Must be caring and responsible and no smoking on the premises due to two children with respiratory issues. Must have reliable transportation and be punctual, reliable, and responsible and not need any days off coming up excluding the fourth of July which I have off. Must be able to interview today and start tomorrow.
