They both treat me like I'm a part of the family and I quite often stay and hang out after 'I'm off work' and eat dinner with them and watch movies, etc. Both families fave me $250 bonuses each along with going in on a Christmas gift together, a beautiful amethyst ring with 4 diamonds, which represent my 4 girls that I take care of. I have been with both of my families for about 10 months now, and we are perfect matches for each other. Any Supplementary Gifts aside from The Bonus: $300 Jo Malone Candle Length of Time you Have worked for the Family: 14 months
City , State and Country: No response
"Last year I got a bonus of $350 dollars. I make $600 per week. I started the job in October of 2005 so the bonus seemed fair.
Last year I got no gift. This year I got no bonus. I did get a Jo Malone Orange Blossom Candle with 4 wicks. I'm a live in nanny and one of their rules in the nanny contract was that I could not burn incense or candles. I looked online and found out that this candle sells for over $300 dollars. This surely makes my gift the worst and most impractical ever! I spent about $400 on thoughtful and practical gifts for each of their kids as well as both parents. Bummer."

"I decided to respond to your questionnaire because my situation is relatively unique. For the past 13 months, I have been working for a very dysfunctional family in need of a lot of care. I live in M-F. The job isn't what I thought it would be at all. It is so much more. The two children I take care of really need a stable force in their life so even when it gets hard, I can't think to leave. The family I work for lives in a big house in Westchester. I wouldn't say their personal information but the police have been to the house because of fights they had. They are not the best parents which you can imagine they aren't the best boss either. They don't remember to leave things for me. My paycheck has bounced 3 times. I have to ask for them to pay the bounced fee. All of this takes time. I come in on Monday and there won't even be milk in the refrigerator so I have to take the kids straight away to the store to get milk for breakfast. If they don't leave money, I pay for it and leave a receipt. I am still waiting to get paid back for groceries I bought last week. I am crazy about their boys though. They are good kids. It is no surprise that a bonus did not occur to my boss last year. This year I thought maybe because I had been such a part of their life this past year. I wouldn't expect a gift since I bought most of the gifts for the mom for her kids and wrap them too. So when I left on Friday, there was a yellow piece of paper folded and taped with my name on it. I opened it and it was $50. The last time I used the credit card at the gas station, it wouldn't take so I had to put her gas on my card. $48. worth. I still don't know if the $50 was my yearly bonus or maybe it was the repaying of $48 of gas. But I put it in my handbag and packed up for the weekend to go home to Brooklyn. The father's mom pull me aside and told me she didn't know how I did it and she appreciated that I take such good care of her grandchildren. Then she said that this was between just me and her and she gave me an envelope. Then I left to walk to the train station. The check was for $1,000.00. I was shocked. It wasn't the money but it made me cry that the grandparents realized that I was doing a hard job. The money is also great but it best was that I felt appreciated."

I did not get paid for Thanksgiving or Christmas, and lots of nannies I talk to get paid. So I am a bit frustrated."

"I have done everything I am possibly able too for this family. I started the job 2 weeks early because she went into emergency c-section. I stay late over half of the week with no notice and no extra pay. Everyday I am there I realize more and more how the mom doesn't appreciate me, and how I can't take working over 60 hours a week for such little pay. The mom wanted me to work on Christmas eve and Christmas day because they are Jewish and don't celebrate that holiday, ever though I asked for those days off exactly before they even hired me. I worked 5.5 hours on Christmas eve and did get Christmas day off, and I am now looking for a new job."

"I changed positions in late September. During the interview, the mother who I interviewed with made everything sound so wonderful so I was excited to start a job with her and her children. I moved in. Everything went okay. It was a lot of work (13 hour days) but as December came in to focus I had learned my way around Scarsdale and to their schools and activities. I had paid to change my ticket home from December 17th. to December 23 (at her request). December 15th. was the first day of Hanukkah. I had hoped that weekend to get all of my shopping out of the way and I was getting excited about my trip home to Chicago. My boss returned home early. At first I assumed it was for Hanukkah. Then she put a movie on for the children and told me that she was firing me. I tried to ask why and she didn't want to give me an answer (I later found out her previous nanny had called and asked to return to work). So not only does she fire me on the spot, but she makes me get out that minute. And I was getting paid every two weeks. She owed me a ton of overtime. I was so upset. You can't imagine this kind of rejection when you have to pack up your stuff and get out of someone's house. I waited for an hour on the curb for a friend to come and pick me up. I held off crying because I didn't want to give that b*tch the satisfaction. She didn't pay me the overtime and she deducted from that two week paycheck for the phone I had just paid to have installed as well as enough to "pay the residual balance". No bonus. No pay for the next week. And no money to Christmas Shop. It was the worst experience ever. For every great story you read on here or here about a nanny getting a great bonus, there are probably three nannies that get screwed. These employers have all of the power when you are a live-in so as carefully as employers are warned to choose their nannies, I want to warn nannies to choose employers carefully! The wrong employer can ruin your life. I am returning to New York on January 7 and will start working for what sounds like a great family. Fortunately for me, the nannies I had met in the area and the parents knew that the woman I was working for was a b*tch and they networked to find a new position for me!"

"I work for the best family with the best little boy ever. I have been a nanny for about 9 years and can honestly say this is the best job ever. Not only because they are great to me financially, but as we all know as nannies most of the time it is better to be respected and appreciated in your job than anything. Still after a year and a half they constantly tell me how much they love and appreciate me and it is so nice to hear. I was stuck in some pretty bad jobs in the past but I kept searching and found something wonderful."
