Pay & Help Finding the Right Nanny for a 6-9 Month Assignment

I am currently pregnant with my first and am thinking of hiring a nanny. The position would be fairly short-term; it would begin when she is 3 months old and last until she is 9-12 months old, at which point I’d like to enroll her in daycare. I can find out the going pay rate in my area easily enough but I am curious what you think would be fair as far as PTO and other benefits are concerned for a 6-9 month long position?

I’m a former nanny/babysitter myself so I definitely want to be respectful of her and not expect her to do things outside of a typical nanny job description. What duties, if any, have you had beyond the actual childcare for a young baby? For example, would baby-related cleaning duties (such as doing the baby’s laundry and keeping baby’s room clean, including dusting/vacuuming it once a week) be reasonable to expect or do you think those duties require additional compensation above the norm?

I will pay her on the books and have a contract. What types of questions would you recommend I ask during interviews? Based on my due date, we would need the nanny to start around late March/early April. When would you recommend beginning the hiring process? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I Hate My Job 2015, #1

I am a new nanny. They interviewed me on the phone and flew me out from the midwest the day before I was to start work. My contract stipulates that if I don't fulfill a year contract, I have to pay the airfare back. I feel like a hostage. During the interview I was told that I would have shared use of the family SUV. It was the nanny car. They assured me they had their own car. Well, I have use of the nanny car during working hours, and mostly week nights. On the weekend, I have to ask to use it, and then they try and stagger when they need it back. They genuinely do seem to need it to take each kid to different activities, I know they split up. But this is big pain. I don't know anyone else yet, so I don't have friends to pick me up. I've been taking the train in to the city most weekends but it gets expensive and feels lonely. In short, I feel really duped about a lot of things.

They were looking for a certain kind of nanny and I fit that bill. I am what I said I was. They are not. The father is always walking around with a glass of scotch. I was supposed to do children's laundry. But when I am here, and the wife asks me if I can wash her sheets today, what am I, a 22 year old nanny supposed to say? If you ask your nanny to wash your sheets, you have some nerve. But if the nanny has to pull out wet lingerie and deal with gooey spots on the sheets, than you are disgusting. Take care of that your self!

Just the same, I do laundry most every day in the laundry room. The female I work for gets dressed in the laundry room after work. She pulls on yoga pants. She drops her underwear right there on the floor and leaves it there. It doesn't matter what the underwear look like, delicate, sharted, or with a massive bloody kotex still affixed to it. As angry as it makes me to be so disrespected, how do I step over something so gross all day long? I wish someone would have told me seperating bloody maxis from dirty drawers was going to be part of my day.

I didn't realize the three and a half year old was still potty training. But that isn't a big deal. What is a big deal is that they tape a picture for the boy to aim at TO THE LID OF THE TOILET BOWL. Not in the bowl. But so that he literally shoots at the top lid as it is propped open. 1/2 of the pee goes in the bowl. Guess who is losing her finger prints to constantly bleaching the bathroom? Most of the time the pictures are of a basketball hoop or bulls eye, but one morning Dad had taped a picture of OBAMA on the toilet bowl. What is that teaching the kid?

The ten year old girl is so obviously the least favorite kid. She's heavy set. The 7 year old daughter looks just like her mom and is thin. The 7 year old's clothes come from boutiques downtown. The ten year old's clothes are GAP and Old Navy. The ten year old is also not supposed to eat sugar.  That is what these brilliant parents have decided is going to help with her weight. In the morning, the other kids have toaster waffles, with syrup. She has toaster waffles plain. But those waffles have chocolate chips in them. If they cared, wouldn't they buy fruit and yogurt? I know I would like that kind of food in the house, but I am met with, "I'm so tired of throwing out outdated yogurt and rotten fruit". The other kids snack on Oreos and fruit roll ups and all kinds of processed junk. The 10 year old isn't allowed to have the cookies, but can have the fruit roll ups, gushers and cheez its, goldfish, etc. Do you want to scream yet? They aren't helping her.  And Mom sets a stellar example for diet. She comes home, opens a bag of potato chips and cracks open a bottle of red wine. That is dinner. That is the only thing I ever saw her eat, with the exception of Cinco de Mayo, when with much fanfare, they brought in a personal chef to make a sumptuous Mexican feast, including flan, which the ten year old could not have. They had no problem with her eating four tacos, a chimichanga and a trough of black beans, but who am I to judge?

The seven year old girl is cute, but so is the 10 year old. The only thing they ever compliment the 7 year on is how pretty, cute, darling, beautiful, petite, gorgeous she is. What the hell man? Are they so obtuse that they see they are destroying both girl's potential with their hideous parenting?

The parents often go out on the weekends and they use a babysitter. The mother told me that anytime I am free, and want to make some cash on the side, she would prefer to use me.  I babysat last Saturday night from 6-11. Pay = $35. Of course, she paid me the same she would pay her 16 year old sitter. But I should be happy, it's spending money in my pocket.

As a live in, you have to know you're going to put up with stuff. I am a morning showerer, or rather I was. After being here 4 days, it was requested of me that I shower at night, because she and he didn't have sufficient hot water flowing in their waterfall shower!! I came upstairs one day, unshowered, in sweat pants. She said, "Oh do you not feel well today". I said, "I was going to take a shower after I got X and Y off to school." She said, "what were you going to do with Z" (the three year old). I suggested I would put on a cartoon for him. She responded, "No that wouldn't be prudent, let's stick to the night time shower and start the day fully ready".

I feel like a hostage. There is bottled water in the house. I took a bottle down to my room one night and came up with it the next morning. My boss looked at me and said, "Honey, the bottled water is for sports activities only, otherwise, faucet is good for all of us". On Sunday afternoon I came home from walking around the local town and She asked me, "Honey, are you eating chips in your room? We don't want to get rats. Please eat your food in the kitchen." What? Other nannies have refrigerators and microwaves in their rooms. I have a basement bedroom with a jail cell style window and a 1/2 bath, located right next to the home theatre.

Oh and guess what the kids like to do on Saturday and Sunday mornings? The parents send them downstairs to the theatre armed with movies and juice boxes and nutri grain bars. They sit for hours in the room watching mindless cartoon movies and wall rumbling decibels. Of course, the parents get to sleep in, having sent the kids two floors away.

And finally, I accepted a job at $450 live in. I am in an upscale suburb of NYC. Now that I have been here a month, I have met other nannies. They make on an average TWICE what I make.

When I interviewed by phone with the family, they needed someone fast because they had caught the last nanny stealing. Well, guess what, according to the 10 year old, the last THREE nannies have all been fired for stealing and all within the past 18 months.

I want to have a Dr. Pepper and bag of chips and watch the Voice. I want to shower in the morning. I want to have the transportation I was promised. I want to sneak out in the dead of night.

Nanny Wonders What Her Rave Review Was Based on...

I have been working for this family for three months. I have a nanny contract. We recently had a meeting where the parents told me that I had "exceded their expectations". They in return asked me how I liked things. I said that I loved the kids and planning days with them and spending time with them but I felt that some of the things addressed in the nanny contract were not correct. The husband grimaced. The wife looked uncomfortable. There were more than a few things, for example I am always on time. One time I was five minutes late and as a result, she missed her train and was 40 minutes late to a meeting. She impressed that on me for assertively. However, my hours go until 7:00 pm. That is what I am paid for in my weekly salary. At least twice a week, they are late, usually by only ten or fifteen minutes. When I brought it up in the meeting the husband said, "so what's the problem, you can see the next movie". He clearly didn't equate the importance of my time with his. The wife got the importance of holding her coworkers up at the meeting, but what of my friends waiting for me at the movie? I wavered on this and asked if they could at least call and let me know if they had gotten on a later train. The husband looked severely annoyed. The wife agreed.
The next thing is the housekeeping and personal assistant tasks that it is assumed I will take on. When I brought this up, they both looked at me with a blank stare. The husband said, "this sounds like girl talk" and excused himself.
It was easier to talk to my boss, who after her husband left again said how happy she was that I chose their family. I told her that we agreed on specific hours and tasks at a set salary. I suggested that we should consider time for going over seven PM as well as the cost for tasks she would like me to do, tasks I could decide if I wanted to do, based on the pay. She then said, "so if I ask you to clean the downstairs bathroom for $5 a day on a daily basis because ___ is potty training, and you don't want to, who is going to do it for $5?" I said, "well that is kind of the point. If you want extra work done, you can have someone else come in and do it".
With this, she got exasperated with me and stood up. She said, "why don't you do this. Why don't you make a list of the jobs that we have asked you to do that you didn't agree to and let me know how much each job is worth it to you. I don't know what else to tell you". And she just left me sitting there like a complete moron.
Has anyone ever been in this situation?
The list of things would include vacuuming the downstairs, mopping the kitchen floor (not mopping up a spill, but mopping the whole flour), washing bedding from each of the family beds once per week and remaking them, washing, drying, ironing and folding the children's clothes, dropping her husband's shirts at the drycleaners and picking them up, emptying the dishwasher which is left STUFFED full every monday morning, washing pots and pans left in the sink ANYTIME they cook, they leave their pans "soaking" and sweeping the front porch. To be honest with you, I would rather not do any of this.
This meeting took place last Friday and no one has said a word since. I have continued to do the things they asked of me as listed above. What do I do now? *Also, I feel both parents have been cold to me. Is it possible my rave review was only based on the stuff I was doing that was extra and doing it for nothing? Is it possible to assign a fair dollar amount to these tasks?

Little Marks & Blotches

I have a problem {that} no one can help me. I am here with {a} one year contract. I have been here since February. I live in at the family house in a very small room in the basement. My contract says I can not take picture{s} of the child. I can understand that. On Tuesday morning the baby had a red mark on his cheek. It was not big. I did not think anything of it. When {the} mommy came home she reacted to the red mark on the baby{'s} face. I told her it was there in the morning. She  did not believe me. The baby is still sleep sometime when I start. This morning I get the baby out of her crib and she has a red blott {blotch?} on her wrist. I don't think the baby has been hurt. I am just very afraid that if the mark is still there {the} mommy will make problem for me.  How can I protect myself in the situation?

Drug Testing

I am new to the world of nannies. I hired my first nanny a few months ago. Things seems to be going well. I read all of the stories about the nannies who end up hurting their children, so I have to admit, I am not yet relaxed. My child is only eight months. My question is this, we hired the nanny and had her submit to a drug test and let her know that we reserve the right to randomly drug test. I am completely torn about this because on one hand, I feel it essential to take every precaution, yet we have yet to exercise the drug testing clause and I wanted to know if I run the risk of alienating my nanny. I have no reason to drug test her, but when I see the things that people do to children in my mind, I think they either had to be on drugs or in a state because they had gone too late without them.
Does any other parent out their drug test their nanny? In the contract, it says specifically, "not to exceed 4 times per year" and we have not done it once.

Am I allowed to quit early?

I moved from Denver to an affluent area of Connecticut about a year and a half ago.
I interviewed for several jobs first - ideally for a position in NYC - but found a job caring for two teenagers who live with their single father. It was the perfect job as I'm great with teens and I have a passion for cooking that I could express by cooking all their meals. I also teach yoga and I would have the flexibility to teach while the kids were at school. The father asked my to agree to stay with them for two years and I agreed. The microcosm within their home was wonderful. I love the kids, I feel respected and I do my job well. Although the first winter I was there I fell into a deep depression. I am a free-spirited hippy-dippy kind of girl trapped in a mansion with very uppity, older population. If I had known that the area was like that when I was offered the job I would have kept looking in NYC. It took a long time to make friends. I felt incredibly isolated and I reached a point about six months in where I almost had to go. It felt unbearable for me socially and mentally I was suffering.      Right around that time of nearly breaking down I traveled to Costa Rica and met an American man who lives there. To make a long story short we have maintained a long distance relationship for the last 8 months and we are ready to start a life together. I have stuck it out this long because I am paying off my student loans. I just got offered a position in CR that I cannot say no to. Professionally it is in alignment of what I want to do long term. The job begins 3 months short of my two year agreement. I already told my employer that I intend to move this year. I told him right away of my intentions And we agreed that I stay through the summer. With this position I would need to leave in the beginning of summer.
My employer is a little challenging for me. He is all business and no emotion. He doesn't place himself in my shoes and try to understand the situation I'm in and really doesn't know anything about me. It's strange given that I have lived in his home for a year and a half. I'm worried about sharing the news. The kids are really attached to me. I care so much about the kids and I hate to disappoint but I need to leave earlier. There is a part of me that worries-- what if he doesn't let me go early?? Is this possible? I need to leave in 3.5 months. It took him a month to hire me after my first interview. Should I give him notice now? -KJ
