Does any other parent out their drug test their nanny? In the contract, it says specifically, "not to exceed 4 times per year" and we have not done it once.

Drug Testing
I am new to the world of nannies. I hired my first nanny a few months ago. Things seems to be going well. I read all of the stories about the nannies who end up hurting their children, so I have to admit, I am not yet relaxed. My child is only eight months. My question is this, we hired the nanny and had her submit to a drug test and let her know that we reserve the right to randomly drug test. I am completely torn about this because on one hand, I feel it essential to take every precaution, yet we have yet to exercise the drug testing clause and I wanted to know if I run the risk of alienating my nanny. I have no reason to drug test her, but when I see the things that people do to children in my mind, I think they either had to be on drugs or in a state because they had gone too late without them.

Hell to the no would I submit to drugtesting.
Any reasonable nanny would do a drug testing. Most all jobs require drug testing, almost all jobs that do also hold the right to random testings. Law reinforcement, child care workers, pharmacists, ect.
Drug test her as you feel you need too; express to her your concerns. You sound like a new mom, most nannies understand how new moms are.
I think if you say you are going to drug test, you have to do it atleast once and let her know you have the ability to do it. I have a business card from the mobile site that does blood work for our family on the refrigerator. The business card clearly says "employment drug screening". Even though we never talked about drug testing our nanny, I think having that card is more of a reminder than never doing it. And I think if I asked my nanny for a drug test, she would do it in a heartbeat.
What has maked our relationship work is letting each other know what we need to feel comfortable.
If my employer asked me for a drug test, I would do it. However, I don't think it's right. What a nanny does in her off time is none of your business. If she gets drunk, smokes marijuana, etc., that's her life and her business as long as it doesn't affect her work. It's a different story though if she comes to work drunk, high, or hungover. Then by all means, drug test her so you have undeniable proof. Drug testing a nanny won't keep your children safe.
I know this was posted a month ago, but I wanted to add my opinion: if my employers were to ask me for a drug test, I would submit, no questions asked. Though I would begin to worry about what they think of me. I think you should tell her that you are not suspicious of her specifically, but just want to ensure the safety of your kids.
