Let's Talk Pay

I have a question for parents. Going rate for a full time nanny in my area is around $15/hour and that is considered average without a degree but with good references. I am wondering what parents would pay for a full time nanny with more than 6 years of nanny experience, a bachelors degree in some sort of related field (child psychology, early education, or communication), great references, and the ability and capability for taking on all responsibilities genuinely and whole heartedly related to their child's growth and development (manners, discipline, fine/gross motor skills, communication skills, teaching appropriate aged subjects, etc).

There is a difference between having a full time nanny to be there and play with the children and keep them safe, and having someone considerably raise your child with the best intentions using experience and education.

Considering the average is $15 for say a safe and reliable nanny, what would you be willing to pay? Also, what would you pay if the nanny also had additional house chores (laundry, organization, general upkeep, errands, grocery shopping, the like)? Again, keep in mind this would be for a career nanny...... Or would you not be willing to pay the extra amount and instead go for the lesser priced nanny?

If you could also please state your location that would be great. Thanks all!

I wouldn't add the extra duties especially if you want their full focus on your child's development. I would say the appropriate amount of pay would be around $30-$35 an hour on the books with benefits (healthcare/vacation) plus commuter benefits. I pay my nanny $40/hr after having her for 3 years with yearly increases and I can tell you from that, we don't have to worry about someone poaching her or becoming burnt out. We have a check-in every couple of months to address any issues that either party is having so that we can continue a great working relationship.

Good luck with your search.

$15 is basically the starting wage in my area for someone who is acceptable. Career nannies charge $20+ per hour. Someone who does all you mention and has the educational background as well can make 28-36 per hour plus benefits and perks.

It's very competitive. Some families will lease brand new cars for the nanny's exclusive use for the duration of contract, pay healthcare plans and buy vacation packages.

I'd do that. My nanny does it all, including teach a musical instrument (she plays three), horseback riding and swimming. She has a lifeguard license.

I'd have to pay for all of those things, so I appreciate that my nanny saves me from having multiple people giving my kids lessons.

The only thing is she doesn't clean. I have a weekly housecleaning service.

I'd say consider your total costs and decide how much you're willing to pay to keep a great nanny.

Bullshit!!!!! NO ONE would work for that little!!!!! I don't care who you are. And you should be beyond embarrassed to even post this, makes you come off as a very horrible mother. Wait...actually, a person might work for that much and it would be someone getting what is more important to him than money, maybe he is a pedophilie. Which in that case, you are paying someone to molest your child. You're a stupid women and a horrible mother!!!

IM WINNING AT LIFE....YOURE A SORRY EXCUSE FOR A PERSON AND EVEN MORE SO FOR A MOTHER!!!!
I got paid today...I was owed $789 for last week...DB asked me if I had $1.00 because he just had $790 and no singles, so I looked through my wallet and noticed that I only two $20.00, he said, "do you have any change?" I said, "yeah, I have nickles, dimes and pennies only" he said, "that's fine, can I have a dollar please?" so I sat there counting out all the change and then gave it to him and he said, "this should be $789.00". He did this knowing that I buy his daughter treats, toys, clothes and work outside my work agreement AND have watched her for free over night and on date nights many times. I would be embarrassed to be soooooo cheap!!! Before you all tell me I shouldn't do all that I do it because I genuinely love being with her and seeing her happy...it's not work to me.

To the dad who had you count out the change like that... wow! I wouldn't be doing any extra work for free, buying the child things or anything like that. I do have a family who I will show up 5 min early at times, or stay 5-10 min late at times (because I was playing) and not charge them... why: I am greeted with coffee at the door, treated to ice cream or lunch often, I have never been asked to do anything other then what we agreed upon, and the one time I asked if I could go home 15 min early MB said yes and paid for the full day. Yes this is a SAHM, but she is not a horror story, she is quite cool, I could see her as my friend--but I keep work and personal separate. So to the nickle and dime post, look for a new family or stop doing the extra for nothing.

TO the $20/day WTF is wrong with you. $20/day for a week is $100/40 hours? who can live off $2.5/hour... You are a slave driver, your luckily I don't work for you, because I would take you to small claims, file a labor dispute, and an SS8 with the IRS; Oh your financial troubles would be worse then mine.

To the OG poster: if going rate is $15 and you have a degree... ect; I'd say $18-20 would be reasonable and an extra 1-2 per any additional chore. I live 1 hour south of SF in another coastal town, I have 13 years child care experience, 8 being a nanny; I make $18-22/hour for 2 kids-- no degree.

Lacy - OP here, and I completely agree, I SHOULD be getting more but the area I am in now, that is what appears to be "good" for around here. I think part of the reason its so low here in the Phoenix area is that there are SOOO many people that are on subsidies here that they work for ridiculously low rates under the table and call it a bonus. They already have the money coming in from the subsidies so the nanny money is just gravy. At first I couldn't understand it, how could people live on that money? But I was at the park with my neighbor and her kid and I heard a bunch of nannies talking and telling the new girl that was there how they do it. The more I thought about it the more some of it "clicked" and made sense.
I miss the Bay Area. I used to work in Marin County (predominantly,) and I was getting GREAT money there. People seemed to understand that it was my chosen career, and appreciate the education, experience, etc. Here it seems that people are much more interested in getting something for nothing. Yesterday I had a two attorney family with an 8000q ft home tell me that they only pay $400/week for a full charge live-out nanny that cleans, does laundry, cooks, grocery shops and more. Oh, and they have 4 children, and expect 100 percent flexibility in a schedule and 50-60 hour weeks.
The sad thing isn't just them... its that THAT seems to be what people think is okay here.

WOW Winning at Life.... I would seriously question why someone is watching your child for $20/day??? There's something most definitely going on there... Drugs? Molestation? Watching porn while your child does whatever they want? You name it, it's probably happening for $20/day! Your poor child...

I was thinking the same thing.

To anon talking about being paid to the penny... that used to happen to me with one family. They were probably the wealthiest family I worked for, too!

It was a temporary part-time position through an agency so I was paid the hourly rate according to the agency. The first kid was $10 and then $1 for each additional kid (they had 3). When it came time for pay at the end of the day, the dad would say, "Ok $12/hour for 10 hours is $120. But my wife took S to the doctor for 2 hours so that's $2 less. Then D went to his friend's house for the last hour of the day so that's $1 less. So here's $117." One time he said, "Hm I owe you $90 today but I only have a $100 bill. I guess you can just have the $100 and you'll owe me $10 and I can deduct that from your pay next time you work." I refused to "owe" him and said that if he didn't want to give me the extra $10 then he could write a check for the exact amount. Once they called to say they were not going to be back before the evening nanny arrived for her shift but that I could pay myself from the petty cash. I said there wasn't enough in there because it was Good Friday and the agency considered that a holiday with a time and a half pay rate. They were unhappily surprised by that info.

^^You definitely never know a family's finances-just because they have a nice house/belongings doesn't mean they're rich. They could also have a high debt-to-income ratio which makes them budget differently.

A lot of these families want a nanny a) for the convenience and b) for the status.

Even though many of these types of families look great, they probably aren't. You won't get a decent wage, you won't get vacation time, you won't get health coverage (or even partial), and you definitely won't get overtime pay.

If you notice that the family does this a lot (I mean everyone at one point hits a hard period), expect to be unhappy a lot and annoyed, or find a new family to work for.

Please don't give your nanny a five dollar tip. They aren't sitters. If you want to give a small bonus, have some respect for the person who takes care of your child and give an appropriate amount. Not what you tip the pizza guy.

I'm salaried with Twins. I have a contract with paid time off, paid holidays, and if I am not needed, I am still paid the same wages. I don't have a degree in childhood developent, but have been a nanny the past 7 years. I make just over 43k a year. The family is amazing, and the kiddos are a joy to be around. I broke my knee in Feb of this year and was out F/T just over 3mo. They kept me on, and when I returned was paid salary again. You always want to have everything detailed in writing.
