Not so much a push present....

Received Tuesday, July 8, 2008 - Perspective & Opinion
I am a nanny who has been working for a WONDERFUL family for almost 2 years now. I absolutely adore my charge, and am so grateful to be working for such wonderful people. The mother is about to give birth to her second and I wasn't sure what is proper to get for gifts, etc. I would like to get something as a "baby present" but also, separately from that, I'd like to get something for the mother just to let her know I think she is a wonderful person and mother, and that she means a lot to me. I was just looking for advice on what to get, what other people have done in the past and what is appropriate in this situation. Thanks for any help you can give!

I'm sorry if this sounds dumb, but what is a "push present"?

Maybe something spa-y for the mom, or a gift certificate for a night out with her husband while you watch the kid(s)? You know her, what would make her feel good before or after the baby's born?

I would get something for the baby, and give her a certificate for an evening's babysitting for a date night.

A push present is a gift the husband gives his wife for pushing out the baby. Yeah, ugggg!

I would get her a certificate for a mani/pedi or a massage. All women love to be pampered!

Maybe, a certificate for brunch at her favorite restaurant. Maybe, you can volunteer to watch the kids for a couple of hours.

How about being a "nite nurse" for one evening. Lets say around 7pm. until 8 am. That way she can get a nites sleep.

Offer to have sex with her husband, since she won't be up for it for awhile... talk about gift that keeps giving!

HAHAHAHA Anon @4:13- holy crap I love you :)

I personally love the idea of offering an overnight, or maybe offering a Saturday or Sunday so that she and the hubby can get out.

pani/pedi gift certificate would be perfect. Or a massage, but that is really expensive. I would go with the mani/pedi.

Home cooked meals that you can freeze. She can take them out when she doesn't have time to whip up something

hmmmmmm, as a mom of 3, the only idea i liked was the meals. i got some *pampering* type gifts when i had my last two babies. the youngest was breastfed and refused to take a bottle. he was well over a year old before i could even consider taking a spa day, and by then, the certificate was expired. dh and i got certificate for a weekend at a hotel with our second child. he's almost 8 and we've never used it.

my suggestion would be a couple pairs of nice, soft pajamas or gowns with easy nursing access. i had to take the screaming newborn to the mall (he hated his car seat for the first six months of his life) buy those myself.

Just my 2 cents: as thoughtful as they may be, I've never used any gift certificates either.
I like Lindalou's idea and the reasons for them.

Good post idea!!
What if after the baby is born you take a pic of the kids together and then put them into a locket?
I got my "employer mom" one of those for Christmas and she loved it.
Also if you don't already cook the meals, they love that too. And sleep, but you can't really give that...

Print this up and give it to her.

That you think so highly of her should be all a woman needs.

Lucky you. Lucky Mom.

i like the idea of offering to stay overnight so she can sleep, if possible. new moms are always really exhausted and just need a lot of help.

IMO, an actual present is inappropriate. Gifts and such go down the chain of command, not up. The obvious exception is gifts for your charge(s).

Offering to act as overnight "baby nurse" once a week, offering free babysitting time for a date night,
etc., along with a gift for baby and for big siter/brother is your best best.

she's just lucky to have someone that cares about her child so much. I'm sure you'll be a great parent someday, you seem really thoughtful. I agree with the cooking meals. I'm sure they'd love that.
