Brookdale Park in Montclair, NJ

Received Wednesday, January 2, 2008-Follow Up
I'm not sure what else to do with this info but as a mom, I feel like I have to let someone know about it and I can't think of any other way to get this out to the Montclair parents who need to know about the danger their nanny put their child in today, (December 30, 2007). I want to remain anonymous.

My husband, daughter, and I were at Brookdale Park in the little playground December 30 at around 2:30 p.m. A little blonde girl around 4 yrs old came in w/a yellow tricycle, by herself. 10 minutes later a black woman with a Jamaican accent came into the playground and asked if I would watch the little girl while the nanny went to the bathroom (out of eye shot). I said yes, but I couldn't believe she was leaving the little girl alone with complete strangers. The nanny was gone over 15 minutes and my husband and I were considering taking the little girl to the police station. When the nanny came back she didn't interact with the little girl at all and stayed on her cell phone until we left the playground. I told the little girl that she should let her parents know that her nanny left her alone with us. The little girl referred to the nanny as "Denise". Denise was about 40 yrs old and had two gold front teeth with dollar signs engraved in the teeth.

I was absolutely horrified that this nanny left the little girl alone with complete strangers for over 15 minutes. As a parent, I'd want to know about this.

That is terrible...but I am even more horrified that someone actually hired a nanny with dollar signs engraved in her teeth. What in the world?

OMGosh......another case where the parents DON'T deserve to be parents AT ALL!! Gold teeth with dollar signs????????? I'm assuming these parents wouldn't even care that Denise left the child alone....and then with you. I'd have called Human Services immediately after I'd called the Police.

I would've called the police. She left the child alone, then she asked you to watch the little girl, and was gone for over 15 minutes. I wonder what she would've done had you left the area and taken the little girl to the police station? What would she have said to the parents? Hmmmmm.....gold teeth with dollar signs engraved? Impressive. HOW did she get the job?

Anonymous said...

I wonder how she got that job, too. Why don't ppl just act??? PLEASE TELL ME????!!?? PLEASE ppl, for the safety of the child, ask her for her home number, if she is able to tell you, and ask for her parents' names and make a call. That's all it takes!! One phone call!! Or, in the case if it's a toddler, then call the police, or make a scene in the park. I bet other parents will take notice and keep an eye on nanny, or someone just might recognize the child, and report to the parents.

TAKE ACTION!

These don't sound like parents who give a darn anyway. My first thought when reading the post was the same as I saw in all of the responses. Who would hire somebody with so little class/judgment to not only keep their chid safe and well cared for, but to be her daily adult role model? I have a feeling she was the cheapest they could get...and this "nanny" probably had to take whatever job she was lucky enough to get, at whatever rate they would pay, because nobody in their right mind would give her a job around children. Admittedly, I'm not up on these things..but does dollar signs on gold front spell sound "gang" to anybody else?

Dear Parents in Montclair, NJ who employ the nanny with the gold teeth with the dollar signs engraved in the teeth,
May I ask why you hired a hoodrat to take care of your precious child? You do realize she could not get hired at McDonalds, Burger King, Payless Shoe store, etc. In fact with her dollar sign teeth, the only work she is suitable for is drug dealing, stripping or pimping.
I hope everyone who knows you realized what evil and selfish parents you are, but that because of that they have empathy for your poor, poor child or children. And I hope the community of Montclair is keeping an eye on your children. As you and your awful nanny are obviously incapable of it.

Sick! Twisted.

Gold teeth with dollar signs engraved and this obvious sign of gangsta lifestyle escaped the parents notice???? NOT LIKELY!!!

More likely....The parents don't give a rat's pink shaven behind as long as some warm body is with their kid while they run around trying to compete with the Jones and the Greenbaums. They also probably pay the nanny about 2 dollars an hour, as that is the norm, I know because I know enough Jamaican and carribean nannies to know they are underpaid and overworked. Not condoning or excusing this nanny, just offering a picture of what is most likely going on here.

Thoroughly sickening. 2:58, well said. OP, you should have called the police. It is certainly child endangerment to leave a 4 year old unattended in public for 10 minutes and THEN leave her with total strangers for another 15 minutes. The PARENTS should be arrested.

OT note: someone named Superamanda has been making some rather "irrational" comments on sfgate.com, under the article regarding the fatal tiger mauling at sfzoo.

I am a nanny and some of the other nannies I see baffle my mind. I see them dressed and acting like sluts or slobs (all races and body types not just the heavy ones), gabbing on the phone or with friends (Usually about inappropriate subjects) and many times, eating the snacks (chips, fruit, etc.) CLEARLY packed for the child. No lie, I watched one nanny eat the heart shaped sandwiches out of a cinderella lunch bag and when the child asked for her lunch a while later the nanny told her she forgot the sandwiches but would make her some when they got home. All the while, these women ignore their charges.

I work in an affluent area, and witness this sort of behavior in places where the children of the well-heeled and upper-crust frequent. The sad part is, if I strike up a conversation with these lazy babysitters, I usually learn that they are earning less than 275.00 a week for a 45 hour week or longer! Most of them are working for parents who could afford excellent child care but prefer a bargain priced babysitter. In fact, my employer often gets laughed at by her peers for paying me a living wage (20.00 per hour) plus gas, expenses and a weekly tip.

These women that work as 'nannies' have a bad attitude, although they don't display it in front of the employer. Many of them complain that since they get paid "nothing" they do "nothing" and I have witnessed this first hand.

Parents please, look at your nanny. Does she show up clean? On time? Smelling nice? Professional looking? Casual but neat? Talk to her and get to know her. What does she do for fun? And For heaven's sake...Don't hire someone with engraved gold teeth!!!!

Also, think about the hourly rate your Lexus dealer charges to change the oxygen sensor in your SUV and try to pay your nanny an hourly rate that, at the VERY LEAST is triple the cost of that Starbucks Grande Latte with the double esperesso and extra mocha shot.

Beware of bargains in brake work, parachutes and nannies!

anon @ 10:58 PM-
i know many caribbean and jamaican nannies in park slope, northern new jersey and nyc and not a one of them is working for less than $12 an hour. So where are you seeing these $2 nannies? In your dreams?

Anonymous said...

Eh, I'm not convinced. This sounds completely fabricated. You people crack me up believing this, lol.

This is why I stopped coming to this site, and today when I come, it's nother BS story, choc full of run on sentences. The writer said they saw the trouble today, but in her story, she said she saw this on Dec. 30th, and no real, nanny would leave their child with a stranger for 15 minutes. Furthermore, what parent would hire someone with dollar signs on their front teeth?
BTW, writer, I know very few, Jamaicans with gold teeth, let along dollar signs engraved on them. wWhat balogna!

Maybe I'll write my 5th fake sighting today to see how many comments I get on that one. Lord knows my first pretend story got 50 comments, lol.

Bored housemoms looking for drama, pity. Say what you want, I won't be back until I come up with a good one.

I guess in your defense, because this is a horrible nanny reporting site, you can't help but to believe what's written. I mean, I shouldn't be abusing it, but it seems many of the posters are abusing it--by lying, and placing the blame on their favorite dis-favorited, race. Ha, go figure.

My Jamaican friend has a relative who runs a nanny placing service. That's how I know them.

There are plenty of people who pay their nannies well and plenty who hire cheap Au Pairs. The Live-Out Au pairs earn an average 350.00 per week for a 50 hour work week. The live-In Au Pairs earn 200.00 per week because room and board is figured in. Wake up to reality. BTW 12.00 per hour is still pretty cheap. The going rate in park Slope and Bergen county is AT LEAST 15.00 per hour, so your Jamiacan friends are STILL being underpaid at 12.00 per hour. People living in Park Slope ands Bergen County can afford WAY MORE than 12.00 per hour if they are hiring a nanny.

4:25..how sad and empty your life is that you come here and make up stories to entertain yourself. Try reading a book or doing volunteer work, you may find it much more rewarding. And dear, plenty of people of color, including Jamaicans, have gold teeth with all kinds of "bling" in them as well as their nails and it looks as foolish as you sound.

OK- FYI ladies, it is most likely this "nanny" was wearing a "grill" aka removable fancy caps, that rappers have made popular. They come right out. I'm willing to bet that's the case. You can even get diamonds and gems put in them!

LMAO-

So sad. You people so concerned with a child's safety yet u stand by and do nothing. Too little too late- but at least you get to come on here and gossip/vent right? The fact you people do nothing is the most disturbing thing...

Maybe next time she'll leave the child with a molester while she's off doping lines in the bathroom- won't you be glad you stopped her by posting on ISYN?! hahahahha

Anonymous said...

How funny, Cali Mom. Is there a little picture square filled with huge boobies in the corner of her posts?

I wonder if that is her at 4:25 also.

I am sorry, I live in Park Slope and believe me, the Jamaican and Haitian nannies are making tons more than $2 an hour. If you believe any nanny is making $2 an hour, you are a sap!

I agree with 3:47

I reside in Bergen County too. Can I ask what agency your friend runs?

There is no such thing as a LO au pair, an au pair by definition lives with, and as part of the family.

I am just saying...but I truly was offered a nanny job, 2 boys, one 2 the other was still in her belly at interview time. 40 hours a week for 315.00 week--GROSS can't even think what Net would have been...in park slope....I guess they are out there....

I inteviewed for an hour in Upper Saddle River, NJ, having answered an ad that offered competitive salary to commensurate with experice. Light housekeeping and care for an infant and 3 year old 50 hours per week. The home was beautiful and the parents well to do. The 'competitve wage' offered was 150.00 per week. When I laughed at them (And I actually did laugh) they tried to justify it by saying it's off the books.

I came from a small town in Wisconsin to be a nanny in Pennsylvania and they charged me $125.00 per week. To me it was a lot because I came from a small town and the price of living was low. I didn't know the price of living was higher in Pennsylvania.

Wow, what a waste of your time!! To live in Saddle River they must be making good $$$$.

I am glad you laughed in their face.

This incident occured and has been verified by more than one source. The OP of the post submitted the story originally to a mom's group in the NJ area and then forwarded it to ISYN. She had originally written it on the day that it occured. I replaced one "today" with "December 30". I overlooked one "today". If this were my nanny, I would be upset and want to know what was going on. It does no one any good to anonymously post on here and attempt to discredit the people who in good faith are trying to alert the parents of this child.

In New Jersey last week, two nannies were arrested for the despicable things they did to the children in their care. Here and here. You do have to wonder if there were warning signs that could have directed the parents to the quality of care their child was receiving.

One only needs to look at ads placed in NJ on Craigslist to see what some people are offering as compensation for childcare. One job actually offered what amounted to 1.92 an hour!!!! Its gone now, having passed the 45 days CL allows people to keep an ad there or I would post the link. I did the math and then called the people just to verify it really was a true position being advertised at that rate. It was!!! For Tenafly!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I just wonder what kind of people abuse the posters.
Should've, Could've, it's not that simple when it happens to you and you are not just reading about it on a computer! All the OP deserves is to be thanked thoroughly. Let us all hope the parents see this.

Anonymous said...

these people offering the $150 a week and so on, these must be for live in jobs-right?

Anonymous said...

10:26-That is outrageous! $150 per week and 50 hour work week? What was their expression when you laughed at them?

9:11-I live in WI, and what do nannies make in NJ/NY/CT? Just curious.

Anonymous said...

Nannies in Northern NJ should be making at least $14-15 hour to survive. Especially, if they are not being offered health coverage, etc.

Around here daycares are not that cheap either. Prime Time in Edgewater charges I believe $11 hour if you want drop off service. Les Enfantes charges I believe an average of $400-500 a week. And thats not one on one care. YOu still have to pay if your child is sick, and can't attend.

Anonymous said...

I use a licensed home daycare provider in upstate NY (near kingston), and I pay $30 a day including food. She may start to charge $10 extra a month for her preschool curriculum material. If you are a low-income working person, department of social services pays $37 a day. I get a lower rate from her than the DSS rate, because I pay weekly (I am not on DSS), whereas DSS pays monthly and is a month behind.

I am surprised no one has commended the OP for going 'that extra step' and telling the 4 y.o. to tell her mommy what happened. I think it was a good move, and hopefully that will help.
As for the Nanny getting the job? I agree with 5:57 ... she probably had the gold teeth out during the Interview, and puts them in when the Parents aren't around.
If not ... then this poor girl has more problems than just a negligent Nanny. Her Mom is just as much to blame for hiring someone like that, and it speaks volumes as to what kind of person she is.

Anonymous said...

The expression when I laughed at the offer of 150.00 per week for 50 hours for week was bewilderment. They had paid their two previous illegal nannies that and thought all nannies would accept the same. BTW, the abilty to read, write or speak English was NOT a requirement! Don' t ask me how someone who couldn't speak English would communicate with the kids!!! The position was either live-in or out-my choice. And, should I choose to live in, they would provide one meal a day. Dinner. They also offered the follwing "perks". Use of a car one weekenight per week and a 10.00dollar phone card per month if I lived in. What a joke!

Someone who wears this sort of thing is unlikely to be able to mask their character long enough for an THOROUGH interview. And I wonder if a background check was performed.

Anonymous said...

Gold teeth with $$ sign's??? Enough said. Lets all pray the child make's it past 18 and then has enough sense to do never talk to her parents again. Jesus people, hiring a nanny isn't like hiring someone to flip your burgers.

I know a TON of people--professionals with grad degrees who barely get $20 an hour. It's just like the real esate boom...some people who have made excess $$ run up the prices of everything leaving the middle class in a lurch. So I'm thrilled for the nanny who makes $20 an hour. That's $52K a year--but I'm not sure a nanny should make more than a social worker, or a teacher or a reporter or a nurse or a lot of other highly trained pros. For me to pay that i'd have to gross over about $80K to break even. That's alot--unless you're a lawyer, doctor, a top executive or work in finance. Soooooooo basically, the working parents who REALLY need to work can't afford to work.

UmassSlytherin said...

a reporter? how is a reporter in the same category as a teacher or a social worker? like, you mean, a reporter who interviews hawt celebs like Michael Pitt, or like, a reporter on the news who talks about politics and the weather, or like a reporter who writes for the Boston Globe and talks about sports, or the reporters who go out in the field like in Iraq and report about world issues and stuff?

I'm sorry. It's early. I'm confused.

any person in education should be the highest paid field in the country: childcare workers, nannies, teachers, etc. I realize this is not the case. But it should be. We're teaching children. If we do not value the people who care for and teach our children above all else then what do we have?

Although I do think that reporters who do stories about Michael Pitt should get paid about the same as teachers. I mean, if they get good photos of him and stuff.

UmassSlytherin said...

p.s. but we shouldn't hire scary, negligent nannies with gold teeth and dollar signs in them and stuff. That's our responsibility as a society.

I forgot to add that.
