Out and About in Pelham Manor, NY

Received Friday, February 9, 2007
There's a nanny I see all the time around Pelham Manor. She hangs out at the park and library with her nanny clique and is very loud and rude and has said some nasty things about her employer. She seems to keep the other nannies in hysterics scoffing at tales of the employer. I am hesitant to repeat something I specifically heard here as I would then be contributing to the nanny's gossip mongering. Nanny seems to very frequently be having a laugh at her employer's expense (often in front of her charge). Her charge is 4, old enough to umderstand what's going on. She's also refers to the girl as "my little paycheck." I am totally non confrontational, but everytime I see this woman I want to slap her. I don't know the parent of this nanny, boy would I love to run into them together. The nanny is African American with a Caribbean or Jamaican accent, short curly hair, no make up, a pleasant face but a smile that shows a alot of gums (when she is laughing which is never with the child but more at you). The litle girl is beautiful with sparkly green eyes, brown hair midway down her back, usually worn straight, child dresses in trendier or what I would consider boutique clothing. Nanny and child are either walking or getting in and out of a taxi. I have lived in this areas for three and a half months. Maybe I am just used to the high quality nannies I used to interact with in the city.

the child is not endanger. this is not a valid sighting. also you are out of your mind with dementia if you think that nannies don't talk about their employers. Nannies have the best stories and while they can sometimes be selective in their audience, they are always eager to tell their tales. Especially if it illuminates how hard their job is or how f'd up the parent is or how invaluable they are to the family.
Nanny Diaries anyone?

Agreed. People who seem like total bores are only total bores until you get three minutes alone with nanny dearest. Most nannies I have met are either under the impression that they are smarter/better than their employer (like Supernanny) or so filled with resentment that the ooze sordid tales.

boy are you wrong. The child is old enough to understand at least some of what is being said, including that she is nothing more than a paycheck. Also, it is confusing to listen to constant attcks on her parents - the authority figures in her life.

It certainly is a valid sighting. The child may not be in danger, but she has a nanny trash-talking her parents and calling her "my little paycheck" in her hearing. I've got no problem with nannies sharing gripes about their jobs (I do that too), but this sounds over-the-top and harmful to the girl who has to keep the secret of what her nanny is telling everyone. I'd want to know this if it were my nanny.

Who better to have a laugh at the expense of than your boss?

7:48: It certainly is abuse because it is affecting who that little girl is. It is abusive to denigrate a child's parent in front of the child because it changes the child and causes anxiety, doubt, and confusion among many other things.

Do you know the name of the child? That is one way in a small town such as Pelham Manor to assist in identfyhing the parents? They should be aware. I would want to know.

agree with all above accept that this is being done in front of the child and children should never be referred to as my little pay check. This is coming from a mom and a nanny! That is just sick!

This is something we all need to remember. Children are smart. They are perceptive. Often times they will form bonds with people like teachers and nannies just because they are good to the child. These might be the very same teachers that rub you the wrong way. Just don't do it. Don't say bad things about someone who treats your child well or loves your child. Don't do that. Don't try to get your children to feel a certain way about someone. Whether good or bad. This is what destroys children! Let them and their feeling evolve naturally-uncorrupted!

1:22 Great reminder I liked the part about letting the children's feelings naturally evolve. Thanks for reminding us all!

I so totally agree that this nanny is in the wrong. "My little paycheck" that might make the child feel the nanny doesn't care for them and the only important thing in this world is money. Kids are really good at repeating things. Should this child repeat anything the nanny is saying... that nanny is in for it from the parents.

10:51A.M. Well said. This certainly is a valid post. No one should ever disparage a parent in front of a child. As for calling her charge a little paycheck, that is truly horrible.
Also, just as parents need to be very selective in hiring nannies, nannies should be selective about whom they work for. If you don't respect your employer, quit!
A nanny

This is definately a "valid" sighting... What parent wants a nanny that talks about them? A nanny complaining about their "boss" is NOT the same thing as another person complaining about their job. Most people that hire nannies, want someone that is going to become a part of their family in some way or another... not someone that just views this as any other job.

Of course this is a valid sighting. What mom would want her daughter treated like this, day after day? Such dismissiveness and lack of respect.

3:12, I agree. A nanny is an intimate part of the family. Anybody that works in a home should keep the inner workings of that home to themselves. This nanny was out in public loudly deriding the family she works for. How would it be if the mother of the family got together in a public place and started cracking up her friends with stories about how her nanny can't ever keep a man, her clothing is so cheap, and boy she sure farts up a storm in her sleep - we can hear it across the whole house! hahaha! Polite people don't do that to one another.

HAHAHAHA! "my little paycheck"! That's good! I'm gonna start using that!!!!

7:28, you're pathetic

"My little paycheck"- too funny!

7.28 you are just a sad person.

I think she got that "my little paycheck" reference from Howard K. Stern as he commented upon the birth of Danny Lynn, Ana Nicole's baby girl.

Well, nannies often talk about their employer's just like everyone else in the world who has a job does, but referring to her as "my little paycheck" in front of her is not the best choice. As a nanny I talk w/ friends, family, my boyfriend, etc. about my job, but I do make a conscious effort not to do so in front of the children.

Wake up. Your nanny talks shit about you too. You are kidding yourself, sister.

Hey! The second "my little paycheck" wasn't me...chill out 10:39. I was just joking around anyways, jeez, lighten up!

Out of curiosity, if you put into your nanny contract that she is not allowed to gossip about you and your family, is it legally binding? I know that celebrities do this all the time but what about us ordinary folks?

Anonymous said...

ordinary folks are not worth talking about. having said that, celebrities do not put it in their contarcts. they have their employees sign privacy provision.

and ps the more you tell people not to gossip about you, the more appealing it is to gossip/

I think this post demonstrates the "ordinary people" are worth talking about if their home lives create the fodder with which to crack up the nanny's friends. An invasion of privacy and breach of trust is the same no matter how famous the family is. In fact, this is worse because this non-celebrity family wasn't in the public eye. You bet they are well known in their town now thanks to blabbermouth nanny.
And if two parties sign a contract, of course it is legally binding. It's a legal contract!

well all of you employers talk about your bosses at work. so what is the big deal if a nanny talks about you. if you would treat your nanny the way they supposed to be treated they wouldnt have cause to talk about you. you employers take advantage of nannies, have long lists of things they have to do on a daily basis which does not include caring for your child and then you want to pay little money and have to deal with your ill-mannered children. why is it you dont want to spend a day with your child but your nanny has too, it is because you cant stand your own child and cant deal with them thats why you drop them off on the nanny. so suck it up and treat nannies with the respect they deserve. thank you

DO NOT equate gossiping about your office boss as the same as gossiping about the family you work for. The office boss works in a public sphere whereas the home should be a private place where people feel safe. *EVERYONE* has things that they don't want others to know, whether it is the state of their finances or the contents of their medicine cabinets or the state of the parents' marriage. It is wrong for a nanny to take advantage of a family's trust and laugh about their misfortunes.

Run back to the city. The nannies raise the children in Pelham Manor. What the nanny was saying about her employer is probably true.
