Saturday

Starbucks in Scarsdale, NY

Received Saturday, December 2, 2006
I went to Starbucks this morning and I was sitting having hot chocolate with my daughter. A nanny came in with a child that was 2-3 years old. He was a little boy with black curly hair, in a jacket that was dark blue on the bottom half and light blue on the top. The hood was dark blue with a white stripe going down it vertically, he had on nondescript blue jeans and tan hiking style boots. They sat down. The child was just playing with his hands on the table and didn't respond. The nanny said "you scream as loud as you can". I thought she was going to go get more cream or something BUT she went to the back to go to the bathroom and was gone for TEN MINUTES. I don't know why she would take that long. And I don't know why she didn't take the child with her to the restroom! Does that feel safe for the child to be left alone? She could have asked someone nearby to keep an eye on him. I wish I would have said something at the time. If this was my nanny, she would be FIRED! This is the busy Starbucks on Central Ave!

How do you know it was the nanny?
I don't agree with leaving a child in any public place, but some parents have a thing about bringing a child especially of the opposite sex into a bathroom especially if they are above infant age (toddler, preschool).
You just can't win these days.
Or even go to the bathroom many times if you are a nanny.

this "how do you know it was the nanny" is becoming the new "FIRST".

I am sorry-but a 3 year old male child is too old to be in the bathroom with a female nanny. This is a tough one-what does she do when she has to go to the bathroom? I think I personally would have brought the child with me and had him stand right outside the bathroom door and sing or somehting. Toughie there

Basically, it doesn't matter if any of the people reported here are the nanny or a family member. This site could be called "I saw your child's caretaker" and he/she was endangering your child! That's all that matters. Even if this woman is the child's mother it is not okay to hit another human being so hard it snaps his head around (as in the 4th Ave San Diego post below). So stop jumping on each other already! Focus on the problem behaviors and getting the word out to someone who loves the child and who can help stop it! No one can know for sure the relationship between the people we observe and it doesn't matter.

That is the smartest comment I have ever read on this board and so completely true!

I do not normaly make comments But I am a nanny and i take care of a 7 year old girl and a 5 1/2 year old boy and i would not leave them by there selfs or even by the stahl door.

oh please...a 3 year old is NOT too old to accompany a nanny (or mother, for that matter!) to the bathroom. My 3.5 year old and 20 month old sons watch me piss all the time. It's a fact of nature! It's not like the nanny/mother was flashing the kid, or showing him her twat! Geez. The kid shouldn't have been left alone in a coffeehouse for 10 minutes in NY. Period.

....well, not exactly the smartest comment ever made on this board. That was made by me and full of common sense advice. While this comment is right up there with some of the best, it doesn't compare with some of mine, especially one of them. Sorry.

dude, can we ease up on the vernacular that includes "twat" and "pissing"

I once heard of how to cure a 3-4 year old who won't stay with the parents that might work well in reverse:

When the kids won't hold your hand, hang back and when (s)he stops following you, move out of line of sight.

Kid doesn't see you, starts to wail.

Wait.

When (s)he's on the total bverge of losing it, come over and 'rescue' them.

Do a reverse of this, & then tuck a note on the kid. Something along the lines of
"Your child was left unattended long enough for me to leave this note."

i think that is a brilliant idea!

I forgot to mention signing it as a "Fellow Parent" or somesuch, so they don't freak out too much when they see the note.

When my kids were just out of their toddler years, I gave them a wider berth, just within spinting range and in a safe enough place so they could explore on their own. To the casual observer, I'm sure they looked unsupervised, but I always cased the area first, marking what adult was with what kid(s). They knew I was always nearby and would look over from time to time.

I agree with the poster....3 is in NO WAY too old to take into the other bathroom. Please people, this is for the safety of children.....not to slander or berate the other person's opinion or observation. Thank God for this site! It's sites like this that may save the life of a child!

I went to this starbucks a few times years ago, and one time, found a bugger in my muffin. I couldn't get a refund, even when I showed it to them. They said it was a a raisin, but I know a bugger when I see one.
