Contract ending....Need Advice

My contract ends in September of next year but my nanny family is already actively pursuing preschools. Although they haven't said so, I fully expect to be let go before September if the twins get in. The programs are competitive and they will have to take an in when it comes. I completely understand, although the uncertainty makes me nervous. In the past, families have paid me through our contract date, even if I was no longer needed. We haven't discussed this at all, so I'm not sure if this is something they plan to do. I have been working on my resume and gathering my letters of recommendation so I'm as prepared as possible. What more should I be doing? Should I go ahead and start job searching? They are touring another preschool this evening, which has no wait list. This makes me especially nervous that they plan to let me go soon. I have no almost savings and can not be out of a job more than a week or two.

I would definitely talk to your employers about their plans if the kids get into preschool. Are these all day programs/daycare or will they still need you for pick up, drop off and after preschool hours?

Ask your employers but start looking anyway. Good luck!

Both of my charges go to school. One is full day and the they is just a few hours a day (preschool) and I still work full time..I would clarify with them..what will they do if a child becomes sick?

OP here

The preschools they are looking into offer full day care and they plan to let me go once the boys are settled in. This was made clear upon hire. There will likely be a two week transition time where the boys are spending days split between me and preschool, but then I'm gone.

As far as sick days, DB owns his own business and can be fairly flexible with hours, so I doubt that's an issue for them.

I'm sure they are just trying to be proactive, since good programs are competive and often have wait lists. It just makes me nervous for my own job stability, as a program could call any day with open spots for the twins.

If you signed a contract than just as they expect you to give them a certain amount of notice they as well should give you the same amount of notice. Assuming this topic was stated in your contract. Example if they put in contract you are to give 2 weeks notice if quitting than out of courtesy and respect they should give you the same amount of notice if letting you go. Definitely get this clarified ASAP with them
