Insufficient Funds and No Apologies

My $885 paycheck for last Friday bounced, but I did not know that until Wednesday. This caused me to have overdraft fees for car insurance, cable bill and cell phone bill. I also gave someone a $100 donation by check that was returned causing her and I both fees. The total fees alone incurred are $185. When I told my boss, she gave me $900 in cash, that was Wednesday morning. I figured out the total fees on Wednesday during the day and went back to her after work. She said to me, "I gave you $1,000,00, that should cover everything.  I was just left standing there with my mouth open. I don't mismanage money. I can count to ten. I don't overdraw my account or pass checks, yet she spoke to me in such a tone it was as if she had done me a favor and I was mistaken. I am so angry that I want revenge. I told her I could only take cash from her in the future. She told me, "I wouldn't count on that." with such a smug attitude. Where does she get off? Basically, if I want to keep my job, I drop it and take her questionable checks in the future. ??

You nannies need to rise up to the power that belongs to you. Do not let yourselves be oppressed and held down by the almighty man, the 7 percent, the non brother. Rise yourself. Speak your peace. Dispense your poison.

Easy to say nannies should stand up for themselves, harder to do in theory. This may cost her her job and it's a bad economy. Not sure what the nanny market is like where she is.

Best bet if somebody cannot risk their job financially and they are very unhappy is to start looking for a new job while staying at the old job.

It's a sad reality that bosses often take advantage of their employees, especially in a bad economy, and there is very little recourse. I am so lucky after leaving a bad work situation to have a great family!

Good luck and maybe try finding a new family if you are unhappy! If this was a one time thing, and you want to stay, everyone makes mistakes. But MB's attitude makes it look like this is an ongoing issue.

Better to cash the check at HER bank. If she has insufficient funds. They will hand back check to.

Stay with her but look for another job! Search hard. Find something better asap then QUIT. She doesn't respect you. I had one boss in 15 years of nannying bounce a check. And that was only because he was fling out of the country at 8 a.m and mistakenly wrote my check on his wife's checkbook. She didn't do a good job keeping up with her account. When I told him, he was very apologetic, wired me money within a couple of hours plus extra monies to cover overdraft fee + extra as apology.

Mistakes happen, but her attitude indicated a total lack of concern for your situation. Did she give you 1000 or 900? Because 1000 would more than cover your fees. Did the bank charge multiple overdraft fees? That's illegal if I remember correctly. They changed the law and now banks cannot charge multiple overdraft fees on the same day. You would owe your initial fee plus your friend's.

Either way, look for another job and in the meantime, take your MB's checks to her bank to cash before you attempt to deposit in your account.

If it's easier for you to cash the check at her bank, do it. They can verify if the funds are in the account. I suggest rewriting your WA and asking for direct deposit. That way the money is there and you won't get screwed.

It's 2015. Ask her for direct deposit.

Agree! Direct deposit is the way to go here.
