Nanny Dearest

I am an employer in the Chicago area. My nephew in Indiana is in need of a kidney transplant. My nanny had offered to get tested to see if she was a donor match. I know she did and was not a match. What I did not know is that over the past two weeks, she has had her sisters, cousins, aunts and other nannies get similarly tested. She has driven people in for testing and given other's subway fair. She told me none of this. Needless to say, I was reduced to tears. Is there anyway to show my appreciation to her for this? I was thinking rather than money or a gift certificate that I would get her a piece of jewelry, a necklace? I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas.

Heart shaped necklace would be wonderful.

Extra paid time off, maybe a weekend getaway (if u own a timeshare or have the financial means), jewelry is always nice too

Wow. That really is above and beyond. I would agree with nannydeb and say a weekend getaway or some extra paid time off. My employer has let me off early a couple times and scheduled a massage or facial that day. I like surprises so this is great too!

Go with the paid time off. Jewelry is a material thing; what she gave involves sacrifice on her part. What you give in return should involve sacrifice on yours, if you want to fully convey what her actions mean to you.

I would get her something she could share with the people who helped too, like a restaurant Gift certificate or movie certificate. I mean, if you can.

A sentimental piece of jewelry. Maybe a foundation that makes homemade jewelry. Where profit goes to an organization. As the Cancer Society or Autism Speaks or Woman's shelter. Along those lines

I would present this over coffee at a cafe if possible.

I wish best to your family. I pray your nephew gets the much needed kidney.

She sounds like someone who'd appreciate a gift that also benefited a cause. Like something where the proceeds go to X charity or organization. This way, she gets a sweet thoughtful gift and she knows that a contribution was made. What a sweet nanny!
