Day In the Life of Newborn Nanny

830 Arrive at work and give Bubba (3mo) his first bottle
845 Change Bubba's diaper and then put him down in his crib for a nap.
1000 Bubba wakes up from his nap, change his diaper then give him a bottle.
1015 Put Bubba in the stroller, round up the 2 dogs and take them all for a walk
1100 Return home from a walk then play until Bubba goes down for a nap. He loves tummy time or laying on his back and having books read to him. I like to lay next to him on my back and hold the books up above both of us so we can both look at the pictures while I read. His favorite books are Brown Bear Brown Bear and Polar Bear Polar Bear
1200 Change Bubba's diaper and then give him a bottle. Lay him down in the crib for a nap.
115 Bubba wakes up from a nap, I change his diaper and then we cuddle on the couch together for about half an hour while I read or sing to him.
145 Diaper and Bottle
200 Go to grocery store and get things on grocery list for that nights dinner
300 Return home and give Bubba a bottle, lay him down in crib for another nap. When he is napping I start the prep for MB and DB's dinner.
430 Bubba wakes up from nap, change diaper, and give bottle. Play with Bubba until it's time to start dinner.
500 Put Bubba in bouncy chair or swing in the kitchen with me so I can cook dinner for MB and DB
545 Dinner is ready so I set the table for MB and DB.
555 MB and DB both get home from work
600 Lay Bubba down in the crib and then sit down for dinner with MB and DB ( I don't always have dinner with them, depends on what I make or if I have plans that night. But 3 out of 5 nights I usually stay for dinner.
6:30 Bubba wakes up and I go grab him while MB and DB clean up dinner table and dishes.
645 Give Bubba a hug and kiss and tell him I can't wait until tomorrow then I leave for the day.

You have to cook MB and DB's dinner? That's so NOT what a Nanny is supposed to do.

It sounds like you enjoy your job. If you are happy with cooking dinner and the family is happy, then it's what you should be doing. If you're not being compensated adequately or if you feel taken advantage of, then it's not what you should be doing. Every situation is different. Me, I would not cook dinner for the MB and DB, but I happily will take the kids and get the oil changed in the car. You do what you are comfortable with.

Cooking is a non nanny task I am willing to do mainly because I enjoy cooking and I enjoy cooking with kids.

Jobs where I cook I am paid more and parents are ok with that.

I think extras are ok so long as both nanny and employers agree to them and the nanny is compensated additionally for them.

It's so nice to read so many stories of nannies enjoying their jobs and getting on with their employers!

I have to say I'm a little envious of all the newborn stories, I want to care for a little little one again.

Hey, Kat, relax. You don't know what's in her contract.
I cook for MB and DB three or four times a week, and I love it. I love cooking, and since I'm a live-in I don't get to cook for myself at my own home.

I do a lot of other household tasks as well, and we all agreed on that before I started working. And no, it wasn't because I couldn't find other jobs, but because I really believe that children thrive on being part of everyday household jobs. (And, that aside, I enjoy household jobs as well).

As long as it's all agreed upon and paid for, any household job can go along with nannying - and some of us really like it that way!

Nenanny, I giggled when I read your comment about wanting to be a nanny to a newborn again...because I was just thinking about how I am so glad NOT to be a newborn nanny! That was a really boring phase for me :) Give me an active toddler or curious elementary schooler any day! :)

Hi! Quick question that's totally off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My website looks weird when viewing from my iphone4. I'm trying to
find a template or plugin that might be able to fix this
issue. If you have any recommendations, please share.
Thanks!

OP~

You sound like an awesome nanny. It is quite obvious to me this lucky baby is being taken care of quite well by you and it looks like you love your job so much.

One caveat:
Caring for a newborn baby is a TON of work in itself.
Are you okay w/doing the grocery shopping and cooking responsibilities along w/caring for a demanding infant?
If you are and are being paid accordingly, then by all means, more power to you!!
However, I just wanted you to know that the shopping + cooking duties are not in the normal realm of being a nanny.

I would NEVER in a million yrs ask my nanny to take my infant into a grocery store unless the nanny insisted I do so.
I am a mother and I know first~hand how maddening bringing a baby into a store can be.

As long as both sides are thriving & happy, then I am happy for you.

While I think it is great you walk the dogs, again this is not a typical nanny responsibility.

I hope this family is not taking advantage of you.

I hope you are making a very decent salary here.

Families have different needs, and nannies vary in what they are willing to do beyond childcare. OP sounds like she has found a great fit, and is enjoying her job.

I am surprised there aren't more objections to walking the two dogs. Most of the nannies I know would not agree to do that. (We have a scoop the poop law here.) I love my work family's pets, and am happy to take care of them, but I wouldn't be comfortable with taking an infant along where I wouldn't be able to wash my hands after scooping.
