BADNANNYSIGHTING
I wouldn't call this a "bad" nanny sighting but more of an eye roller. Idk to each his own. MB and DB belong to a country club with a fantastic pool that we frequent. While playing in the pool with my charges, 2 little girls about 6 or so came up to us and asked if they could play. They soon mentioned they were here with their nannies and pointed to them. I saw two scantily clad women, laying all the way back in their chairs (so faces looking straight up) tanning in the sun. I come to the pool in a tankini (by no means is this my normal swimwear) and play with my charges (throw dive sticks, play basketball, etc) because that is my JOB. I understand that I am a guest and while my MB and DB are very easy going, I am there to work. I'll say my state: Wisconsin.

I'm thinking for the more conservative parents, this would probably bother them. They might not even know what their nannies are wearing to the pool.

I know when I go in the water with my charges I dress for play, too. I wouldn't want any 'mishaps', lol.

I went to the country club with my charges my first week on my job, with MB. I wore a bikini, but I also spent most of my time playing with the youngest child. My body doesn't fit standard clothing sizes (does anyone's?) and no matter how many one-pieces and tankinis I try on, they never fit. So the bikinis in this story don't bother me; the lack of interaction DOES.

Who cares about their choice of swimwear? You should've focused this post on the fact that they weren't interacting with their charges, not judging their bikinis.

OP:

There was a story about a 4 year old on a childcare center field trip drowing in 5 feet of water at a public pool. Apparently 12 lifeguards were on duty, plus chaperones from the center, yet nobody saw this child in 5 feet of water. A group of children found him in the bottom of the pool. How did someone miss this?

Where are you in WI? If you say Madison, I can see why this is a bad sighting.....

Bad indeed!

My biggest issue is that these girls were completely ignoring their charges anything could have happened!

My opinion is that binkinis are not appropriate nanny attire, but that's the least of problems in this post.

I'm sorry but I do think the way you dress is important. I care for two preteen boys so I.guess the fact that I don't Want them to loose respect for me affects my choice. And its much easier to find a one piece or a sporty tankini to fit your body then it is to find a bikini so don't go giving us that bull.

This was Milwaukee county

And yes the lack of interacting is very alarming too...It doesn't matter if the kids are strong swimmers or have friends around because as we all know from.a previous comment...shit happens
We don't get paid to chill and relax...go to a beach and do it on your own time

I personally do not think it is inappropriate to wear a bikini to a country club pool. As long as it is not a thong, and is tasteful..why not?

What concerns me here is that these nannies were lying around the pool and not interacting or even supervising their charges. As a nanny, you are right OP. They should be working. If the kids were much older, say perhaps in their teens, I think it would be okay, but at least they should have their eyes on their charges.

I think this is a bad nanny sighting.

I have been taking my charges to their country club pool for the past 5 summers. Now that they are older(6+), I am not always playing with them in the pool. Some of the time, I sit on the side of the pool or in one of the lounge chairs and watch, as I think a sense of independence is important for them. There are two lifeguards at all times, but I still consider it my responsibility to watch in order to make sure my charges are safe. The lifeguards have to watch all of the children in the pool, not only my charges. If something ever happened to them... well, I just can't even consider that.

There was a 6 year old that just drowned in an Iowa public pool recenntly. Another case of the guards not seeing it, someone else did.

Also, all nannies and any adult taking children near water should know what drowning really looks like. This is a good article on it that I found last year on facebook: http://mariovittone.com/2010/05/154/

I personally wouldn't wear a bikini while "on the job". Not because I deem it inappropriate necessarily, but because I am a clutz, pair that with a clumsy 3 year old and it's a recipe for boobs. Haha.

But someone not watching/paying attention to their charges? Now that's totally unprofessional (not to mention dangerous). If my charge were to speak to another adult that we don't know I'd be beside them in a second. At minimum to introduce myself to the other adult so I have a better idea what kind of person is around.

I don't think there is anything wrong with not staying **right** beside your charge the entire time you are at a playground or pool (assuming the kids are old enough to be safe playing at either of these locations of course) as long as you are still paying close attention to them from your park bench/beach towel. Not noticing when they enter the water or speak to a stranger is just asking for something bad to happen.

I totally get why the OP sent in this sighting. I probably would have too. It's so frustrating when you see kids not being properly watched over. Whether by their Nannies or parents. I think this serves as a good reminder to check our own "pool time policy" for any flaws. :)

Six is far too young for the nannies to not have them on their horizon. IDC about the bathing suits tho.

That's pretty much why I don't think bikins are appropriate nanny wear to easy for accidental exposure. Same with low cut tops & tank tops.

I also don't have a problem giving a child that is old enough space to explore on their own, but you still need to remain vigilant.

Laying flat on your back, staring at the sky, working on your tan, while your charges wander about talking to stranges is not keeping vigilant and therefor not being a good nanny.

This is a bad nanny sighting all around good for you OP!

Watch your charges! Always!

Also you are a nanny. If You want to play Baywatch and prance about in a bikini get a summer job at the beach. Geesg!

Not even, summer cam counselors are allowed to wear bikinis or go shirtless when they take the kids to the beach in my area.

this is a good siting. we have one minor issue regarding unprofessionalism. (In my opinion, a nanny could get a classy bathing suit that is a two piece, even. I don't think they should be wearing string bikinis.

major issue here is they were not watching their charges by the water. It is so dangerous. I would want my nanny to be in the pool with them, or at the very lease poolside with her suit on keeping close tabs on them. I am certified in adult and child first aid and cpr and have used it at times. accidents happen in the water so often when the children are not well attended to. It's a serious thing.

good job, op.

As a nanny, what I also find irritating about situations like this is that I then feel responsible for supervising the other child, at least as long as he/she is playing with my charges. Just for the simple reason that I am concerned for their safety. I've had some situations like having a 2 or 3 year old child try to follow us out of the park with the caregiver no where around. Terrifying!

Op,

Which CC was it? I go to a club with my charges in Milwaukee county as well and see this all of the time. SO SAD.

In the summer where I live, everyone is scantily clad in the summer... walking down the street.

sigh....

I don't understand why everyone is so judgmental all the time.

Are you in your 80's?

the only thing I wish they were doing would be WATCHING their charges. Doesn't matter how they are dressed for a pool. As long as they are dressed
