Appropriate Gift Ideas for MB's Birthday?

opinion 2 Hi, I'm an afterschool nanny for a family and we all get along great - thank God! The family is super nice, and the kids are great... despite some natural frustrations. The mom's birthday is coming up next week, and I was wondering if I should get her a gift? She bought me a hoodie/pants set from Gap (like the soft sort of yoga pants kind) for mine, and the kids made me cards. She also is super lenient and normal.. Maybe I should just make a cake? I want to be nice but not inappropriate.

I would suggest getting supplies to have the kids make a nice craft for their mom's birthday. Birdhouses, fall centerpieces, decorated foam pumpkins (with beads ribbons etc.). You could also have them decorate a cake or cupcakes (there are elaborate yet easy designs on familyfun.com). I think it's a subtle way to show that you care while not crossing the line of business vs. friendship.

MB will know that you thought of her on her birthday and helped the kids make it a special day for her. Plus it won't feel awkward or at all inappropriate to you because the kids will be giving it to her.

I've offered a free night of babysitting for the parents to go out to dinner.

How about a nice garden stone. The
Kids could decorate it with their handprints
and different gems.

Our nanny had the kids decorate a card and gift for me - she took them shopping for crafts stuff, and made such nice things with them. It was lovely because my 2 year-old daughter also got a kick out of making the stuff (a card and a box) and now I have a lovely keepsake. The time and thoughtfulness were a perfect present. She also gave me a card with a nice message and an afternoon of free babysitting. I was very appreciative, and glad she didn't "buy" anything (though I recognize her time is worth plenty).

I'm a mom and wouldn't expect a gift from the nanny for my birthday. I love the idea of a child led art item, be it a card or painted frame or drawing.

I think it really depends on your relationship with the mom. I work for a great family and we went to a paint your own pottery place this year and the kids painted coffee mugs for mom. The family I worked for before we always painted a platter or a flower pot with their handprints and they're still displayed around the house.

If you're unsure about buying her something then have the kids make birthday cards and bake a cake (or special treat together for her!)

I always had the kids I nannied for make their mom and dad a cake for their birthday's. They got to decorate it however they wished. Their parents loved it. :)

I usually get the mom a card and bake a cake/cupcakes with the kids. Something low-key but that lets the parents know I didn't forget their birthday!

Definitely do a project with the kids. Make cards and even bake a cake (preferably mom's favorite). I have done this with previous MB and they appreciate so much!!
