Opinions on Temp Work?

opinion 2 Hey, I am looking for my next nanny position and may be able to do some temp work with an agency and I was wondering what you all thought about temp work? Have any of you other nannies done any temp work? Where were you placed? Did you like doing temp work? Anything you feel is important for others starting doing temp work? etc. Thanks everyone!

Nanny temp work or any temp work? I'm the queen of temp work through an agency. Please clarify and I'll be happy to respond!

nanny temp work through an agency

I would do it if I didn't need consistent Nanny income. It would be a good way to test out the waters and see if being a Nanny was something I wanted to do. ♥

Ok, well I have not done temp work nannying through an agency, just referrals from friends.

It's nice to have money coming in an be busy. It's also nice to know that if you don't get along with the kids/parents (one of the twins screamed at the top of her lungs if I did something she did not like) that you are leaving soon!

If nothing else, it's money and a chance at more good references!

I personally had a bad experience doing temp work but I think it is just because the agency sucked. The owners were kind of jerks and the pay was bad. The nannies weren't allowed to set their own rates, so we ended up getting just barely over minimum. I gave them my schedule month to month, like they asked, but they were all the time scheduling me for jobs at times I couldn't take them and I would have to cancel of course. And quite frequently I would get last-minute calls, like less than a half hour before the job was supposed to start. But it is a great way to make some easy money to tide you over until your next full-time job starts. Just make sure the agency comes highly recommended.

thanks so much everybody I have a job lined up tomorrow morning with a 2 year old (set up through an agency) I talked to the mom today and she seems great. I'm glad to get the pay while I am not working and looking for a new nanny position.

I loved working temporary nanny positions in the past. The families really appreciate your help. Plus, usually the pay is better because it is temporary. Also, it never would get boring. Always meeting new families and going into different environments.

I temp'd once, though not found through an agency and it was a really bad experience. The mother advertised a certain rate, then she kept trying find different ways to lower it. She said she "thought" she advertised $3 lower than what she actually did. I firmly said no. Then she said she wanted to pay a lower rate while the kids were asleep, I said no. I was ready to walk but she regressed. Instead, we had agreed there would be no housework aside from child related duties and she kept leaving me lists of things to be done. She spoke to me very authoritatively and had no respect for my time as she was constantly changing the schedule. My best guess would be that the combination of the facts that a) these people were not very wealthy, b) she thought the wage was unfair (though she advertised it, I guess she thought she'd be able to negotiate lower) and c) since I was just temp she didn't feel this was a relationship worth investing in. Either way, ever since my last day I haven't responded to any of her emails or voice mails. her kids were great but I think twice about temping from now on.

NannyM - can you explain to me how to find any temp work through agencies? I'm moving 1600 miles away soon with no job so temping might be something I could do quickly while I look for nanny work. I have experience as a waitress (2 yr), secretary (4 yr), babysitting (4 yr), daycare (6 mo), kindergarten intern (3 mo) & nannying (1 yr). I'm moving to Boulder, Colorado. THANKS A TON!!! you can email me if it's easier at starcheckered at yahoo.
