Abyssinian Tot Lot in NYC

Received Friday, August 6, 2010
nanny sighting Holy Pete! Your nanny backhanded your child on the back of his head twice for not listenning. Is this the punishment that you okayed? Your nanny is a british sounding nanny, about 25, wearing brown buckle sandals with cankles, green jean capris and a white t-shirt. Your child is a hyperactive little boy of about 3 named Dylan/Dillion. This happened this afternoon at the Abyssinian Tot Lot.

How terrible! I hope the parents didnt okay this and I hope they see this!

BTW, what are sandals with cankles? I may not be the only who doesnt know what these are. I only ask because you mention it as an identifier.

Cankles is a slang term used for a woman that has fat ankles or no shape to the lower leg/foot area.

Really, Blow? That's the stupidest thing I ever heard! LOL....well, maybe not ever, but close.

seriously, cankle is a term used for when there is no distinction between a persons calf and ankle = cankle.

The OP used cankle as an identifier in a phrase about sandals..."brown buckle sandles with cankles." That's what confused me, but still...

...the actual meaning is just plain stupid. Must be a regional thing. I never head it before.

I don't know if it is a regional thing, but it is certainly a rude thing to say. As is calling the child hyperactive. This alone makes me dislike the OP immediately. And I always HATE when people ask "how do you know it was the nanny?" but I have to ask it in the situation. If you're just passing through a parking lot, how in the world do you know who is smacking a kid? My dad is from England and my mom is from India and my accent is as Southern as you can get!

I felt the same way about OP, especially when I found out what cankles meant. If she really hit the kids, nanny or not, it is wrong, but the OP isnt doing herself any favors with this post either.

The tot lot is a playground. Tot lots are usually designed, as the name would suggest, for toddlers, and it's quite possible a 3-year-old child would be bored there (I've never been to this particular playground, so I don't know the layout).

We can argue about demeaning terminology, but I feel that any instance of physical punishment on the part of a (possible) nanny is worth reporting on this site. Much more serious than some of the other stuff that gets reported...

Um...a three year old is a toddler. Are you suggesting the equipment is designed for a one year old? Come on!

I hate stupid ass comments.

OK, my bad. I saw the word "lot" and made a quick assumption. I take it back, though I still believe OP was likely making her own assumptions.

You're right, any kind of physical punishment is worthy of a report. But stick to the facts! By insulting people, you lose your own credibilty.

Ernesto,
"Um...a three year old is a toddler. Are you suggesting the equipment is designed for a one year old? Come on!"

I am not familiar with A.T.L., but there is equipment in many NYC playgrounds scaled for one and two yos that a three yo would disdain as "for babies". Since the playground in the post is called a Tot Lot, it may be that it offers only small scale equipment.

I also hate "stupid ass comments", and rude ones as well!

You are wrong. A three year old is fine on a tot playground. DUH Dick Tracy. Look at how many people are delayed at that age. Give me a break.

Actually, a 3-year-old is usually not considered a toddler, at least according to the AAP and everyone I know who works with young kids.

That having been said, it's not that a 3-year-old couldn't have fun at a tot lot, it's that he would likely (not definitely) get bored more quickly than at a full-size playground. The point of which is that children are more likely to misbehave when they are bored.

THAT having been said, out of curiosity I checked the location in question, and found it is not exactly...nanny central, shall we say. It COULD still be a nanny, but it makes it more likely to be a young mom.

I could do without some of OP's descriptors, but IMO doesn't change the value of the post, when there's any chance it's a nanny.

I completely agree with SG. The physical punishment is definitely uncalled for, but by resorting to name-calling, the OP loses his/her credibility and distracts from the focus of the post.
If this was in fact the nanny, it's just one more reason to support nanny screening services. Not only do they (hopefully) protect the children, but they also help protect other nannies from being labelled as careless abusers.

Good grief! Why is everyone being so sensitive? I didn't take OP's description of cankles to be rude or mean. Seriously, I have a friend that has them and they are quite noticeable. She hates having them because people are always commenting on them. It is not exactly a common feature.
