I had to stop reading at number 9. That broke my heart. I think parents who wish to homeschool their children should have to pass a test that puts their intelligence level at that of a college graduate. How can someone who can hardly spell be qualified to teach someone else to spell? And I really don't think the state department of education would be too happy to hear that the babysitter off the street was the one "teaching" the kids, not the parents. Also, isn't one of the points of homeschooling to be able to spend more time with your kids, not use that time to hire a babysitter and go get a mani/pedi? And if this parent is out working, that's just one more law she's breaking--they don't allow parents with full-time, out of the home jobs to homeschool their kids.

Ugh! That makes me sick!

#18 40 bucks an hour!!!!! Holy crap, I can be on the next plane there!

Read it carefully though, sounds like their son is a tough little boy, he mentions that "Our son is a loving, rambunctious little boy that loves music, and anything physical."

And later on he mentions "Ability to enforce rules and boundaries"

And the last red flag "Communicate any behavioral issues to parents and work cooperatively in raising our child."

:) good luck for whoever they find.

Kaitlyn it depends on the state, down here in Texas the rules are very lax on who is allowed to home-school, and yes parents are allowed to work full time out of the home and home-school their kids.

I have a friend who works for the foodstamps office who home-schools her 5yr old son when she gets off at around 6pm.

I used to live next door to a couple who home-schooled their kids but never really home-schooled them, she just let them play outside all day long.

Sure you could probably call CPS on a person like that but I highly doubt it would do any good.

#11 - Even a couple would be, I think, hard pressed to use up $300 in utilities per month. I pay less than $200 per month average for my 1000 sq ft condo - heat/ac, gas, phone/DSL, Cable. Why not just drop the salary to 40K?

TC said...

tales, I have a less than 700 square foot apartment and I pay about 300 in utilities a month and I'm never there!!! My light bill is always 100-150 then add in the cable/internet and that's another 150 a month.

#13 – 1..21 an hour…seriously??? What are they thinking?

#18 – it sounds like compensation would only be for 16.5 hours a week whereas you’re actually working 33 hours in a week? Doesn’t make much sense. Although that still puts it at $20 an hour which is fantastic for one child so maybe it’s still okay after all.

Am I reading wrong-- what's wrong with #2? You're watching one autistic boy, taking him on outings, etc. If it's the pay she does mention that it's $10-$15 per hour, which means that she is willing to pay $15, which is the going rate in our area.

Some of the pay ones are INSANE this week, although, I'd leave my hubby and kids in a heartbeat to make $40 an hour watching one little boy. Reno, here I come!! :)

Shucks mine did not make it.
Read the Couple one for $44,000 did not see aboutt hem having to pay utilitites. WTF is up with that?? I agree dropping their gross pay by a certain amount might be better.

Uh, HELLO???:

"He manifests this in aggressive outbursts which include hitting, throwing, kicking, biting, spitting, etc. Working with him requires knowledge of or willingness to use safe restraining holds as well as using sensory input to redirect/refocus him. We use Collaborative Problem Solving and you would need to learn this method if you are not familiar with it"........

I do not remember getting a Submission from you. Sorry it was not posted.

I'd have to agree with Teacher in a Combat Zone, yes some autistic children are very difficult to care for but some nannies have done it before and some (myself included) have had specialized training in this arena. As $10-$15 is above the going rate for my state, I'd jump at the chance for that job. I didn't understand why it was posted here either, but I guess it is asking above and beyond the average nanny duties.

ADHD?? said...

Re #1

I am a mental health professional, I am not aware of a 2 year old (almost 3) being diagnosed with ADHD. I am not saying he might not be "hyper" or have sensory issues or other developmental issue. The diagnosis really can't be made until they start school and the problem manifests itself in at least two settings (ie: school and home). What this mother needs is a complete evaluation through early intervention, and not broadcast an unoffical diagnosis all over.

MissDee said...

I question a 2 year old with ADHD, for the simple fact that there is no way a child that age can be diagnosed. There may be sensory disorders, however as an ADHD adult, a child cannot be diagnosed without observation by an early childhood specialist or medical professional.

Does anyone remember the child that I had in my classroom who I had behavior problems with and who I said thought had ADHD? Her behavior got worse when she was moved to the 4 year old room. She was sent home for the day on numerous occasions, and evaluated by someone who tried different listening/relaxation techniques. Nothing worked, the behavior didn't change. One evening I was in the closing classroom with this child when I gave a 5 minute warning that we would be cleaning up. When 5 minutes passed, I simply said, "ok"....This child got on the table, refused to get down, and told me to help her off the table. I looked at her and said, "you made the choice to get on the table. That is not a safe choice. You can get off the tablr yourself". I ignored her, and tended to the other children while I saw this child destroy the classroom in 90 seconds. Toys, books, markers, etc were strewn about everywhere because this child has ADHD. 2 weeks ago, this child had a meltdown and threw a box of scissors. She was kicked out that same day, because throwing scissors is a liability issue. I also think my director had enugh of the behavior. For this parent to say their child has ADHD is bull. They need to learn what it is before they label their own child as bad.

#1, my guess is that she hired some stranger off of craigslist with zero background check, references, etc, because the person was available on 5 minutes notice for $1.50/hr. And shockingly, that candidate seems to have been a child abuser/neglecter who is legally required to STAY AWAY FROM CHILDREN. You think she'd learn?

I just realized I did not put anything in the title of the e-mail when it was sent to you so it probably got sent to SPAM. plus I sent it out at 1:11 am on saturday.

Number 1 concerned me. I never thought of number 1 like that Cali Mom. I briefly glanced at the ads today while I was getting a pedicure....

Not Me!- Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough in my initial posting and MissMannah did a lot to clear it up. I am a teacher and the passage that you highlighted did not even register as abnormal on my radar. This is something that we deal with on a daily basis in the public schools. It is perfectly acceptable for a parent to hire a nanny specifically to take their autistic child on outings. The nanny may need some special training, but for someone who has/ enjoys working with autistic children this is a more than acceptable job. She outlined her needs clearly in her ad and is offering an acceptable amount. She is not requiring anything crazy of her nanny, nor are her hours out of the ordinary. That is why I was questioning its inclusion in WTF.

I checked out your omitted submission and I don't get it. Why is this appropriate for WTF? $500 a week and room and board for a five day work week and they have a live-in housekeeper, so strictly nanny work. Seems like a decent living. I guess it could pay more, but hardly outstandingly WTF. Am I wrong? Am I missing something?

not me:

number 2 is a normal ad describing honest behaviors of autistic children. there is nothing wrong with this child: the parent is just being honest. people who work with special needs children are used to this behavior and god bless them because we need people who can deal with it and treat them as the precious children that they are. It is not their fault they are autistic.

I think this is a very well-written ad by a parent who really cares about their autistic child. I am really glad MPP posted it.

Lola I think it's because there are 4 kids and you are only making 500 a week AND they want an Hispanic or Philippina nanny

#1. I feel sorry for this mom. She is a single mom struggling to raise her child with a job with horrible hours, and such low pay that she needs food stamps.

#2. The only thing wrong with number 2 is that it is only for two hours. Most nannies and babysitters have a four hour minimum.
There are nannies who find great satisfaction in helping children on the spectrum. I know an awesome woman who works with a boy very much like the one in the post. I hope this family finds someone like her.

#3. LOL, It sounds like Mommy is the one with separation anxiety!

#5. I can just picture the caliber nanny her so called agency provides!

#11. I wonder if the public program pays 44K, and the $300 a month for utilities is really a kick back to the employer.

CuriousDad said...

You cannot base hiring decisions based on race. Now if they wanted a Spanish speaking Nanny or Tagolog or Biloc. Then they could have specified that instead.

talesfromthe(nanny)hood said...

Actually Curious Dad, unless the family hiring the nanny is planning to hire her through their company, and that company has enough employees to fall under federal and state anti-discrimination guidelines, a family can be aa blatant as they want about their racial preferences and any other preferences they have.

If they were using an agency to hire, they would have to accept agency policies on discriminatory practices, but a family hiring an employee on CL can be as blatant as they wish. If they were offensive, using deragatory terms, their ad would likely be flagged, but otherwise...

And they are more than likely advertising for specific races to apply because they know their chances of finding someone willing to work long hours for little pay are better if they find someone not "hooked in" to a nanny network.

I would bet they go through a nanny every 6 months or so, losing each nanny once she does find a network of fellow nannies who clue her in to how grossly underpaid she is for the area.

CuriousDad said...

talesfromthe(nanny)hood said...
You may be right on WHY they are hiring a nanny the way they are hiring one.

And it is true that the title VII Discrimination laws only apply to those employers with 15 or more employees.

I should not have said "You ‘cannot’ base hiring decisions based on race." as it is misleading to what the law actually says. I should have said it is discriminatory to base hiring decisions based on race/nationality. I will even ad the caveat of without a compelling reason for it. But as we previously discussed in other parts just because something is legal does not make it right.

Its legal to hire a Nanny for 8 bucks an hour for 5 kids. It still will get on WTF because it is just wrong. Would it not?

Lola said...

Okay, I see where you're coming from. Is it 8 an hour? If it is a 40 hour week at 500 it would be 12.50 and hour, but I don't feel like checking out the ad again, lol. Oh well. I know it is technically wrong to include room and board in lieu of part of the weekly wage, but it seems like an okay gig, like I said before. $2000 a month, no rent or basic utilities, in this economy, is decent. Decent. Too bad I am not a Filipina nanny.....lol. After bills are paid, they are netting more than a lowly librarian..

CuriousDad said...

Lola, nope just talking about them requiring it to be a certain race. This in my mind goes right up there with a Dad asking that the nanny to be good looking or "put together" as we have seen posted earlier.

The money comment was to show something that regularly has been on the WTF list, but is still legal.
