St. Catherine's playground on the UES - Manhattan

nanny sighting logo Date: Today, Monday Sept 28th (yom kippur) around 11am-noon. I go to St. Catherine's playground on the UES of Manhattan (1st ave @ 67th St.) and see bad nannies all the time. Today I was pushing my son on the infant swings and a nanny was next to us pushing a girl, but of course she was on her phone the entire time like a robot, not interacting with the girl at all. She didn't even make eye contact with her. The little girl began speaking to me, so adorable. Her name is Maddie, she's 3 years old and her birthday is in November. If you know this girl's parents please tell them their nanny basically ignores Maddie and should be fired.

Obviously this nanny ignores Maddie, she wasn't pushing her on the swing or anything.

Is this nanny perfect, no. But does she deserve to be fired because she didn't engage the child for every second? Probably not.

OMG how dare she not focus her attention 100% on the child!!!! She should be shot! Come on lady if that's the worst you can come up with you need to find a new hobby. The kid was in a swing, is the poor child not allowed to observe? Must the nanny entertain the child constantly? Was the child crying? Was the nanny cursing at the child? Was the child being physically or verbally abused?

There are times that I will just push my charge in the swing while other times I talk to her about the squirrel climbing the tree or the blue car that drove by or the wind blowing but not always...there is nothing wrong with allowing a child to entertain herself

As a mommy there have been many occasions where I push my child in the swing while making a phone call. I would have no problem with my nanny doing the same if need be (if of course I ever had a nanny!)

I would not ever think of firing this woman for this behaviour.

Okay-- Did you hear the conversation? I can not TELL you how many times I get caught on the phone with the MOTHER of my charges (she is a chatty one). I would be really po'd if I found out I was being looked down upon for something out of my control.

Secondly, your ad hoc post, IMO, was completely discredited by your flagrant use of generalizations.

Ack! I worked for a chatty mom too! How many times are mommies at work and they take a break to go online or sneak in a quick text or phone call? Because you are paying us to be with your "Son or Daughter of Heaven" means we can't take a sort of mental break?

Come back when you see a nanny slapping a kid around while on the cell phone and sitting with her friends.

While I don't think OP is the devil for posting this siting, I don't think that nanny using a phone while pushing the little girl in a swing is necessarily bad either.
She was happy swinging.

I, too, have used a phone or texted while pushing a child in a swing. It is not a crime, and a nanny doesn't need to be interacting with a child every second they are awake. The school age class (3-5 graders) asked me why they need an hour of quiet time, and I explained to them that everyone, including children, need a mental break. I told them to consider quiet time a nap for our ears and minds. Perhaps this nanny was taking a "mind nap", while the child was still learning, even though the learning was not verbal. Children do learn through observation.

Again, I do not say anything about posts or OPs of posts, yet OP, maybe if the nanny was IGNORING the child, as in the child got away from the nanny and the nanny didn't know where the child was, then, yes, the nanny should be fired, because THAT is unprofessional and endangering the child's safety and well being. The nanny ignoring the child while pushing her on the swing is not worth getting fired over. OP, when you see a nanny putting a child's life in danger, abusing the child, or anything else that looks horrible, then post again. Until then, perhaps get a life, since you apparently don't have one.

I'm sorry but oh please. Give me a break. The nanny should be fired?
I don't think so.

OP, Mom's right: you're not the devil. But in my opinion, you certainly need a hobby.

Who was interacting with your child while you were busy engaging Maddie?

I'm generally critical of the "cell phone nannies", but I have to agree with the above in this case. Apparently Maddie was swinging, and engaged in a chat with the lady pushing the baby in the next swing, so she wasn't bored or being neglected.

OK, I'll be the voice of dissent here. Sometimes things look all right on the outside, but you just get a gut feeling that something is wrong, and I assume that this is the case here. In any case no parent will fire a nanny based on a post, but they might investigate, which is always a good thing. And to all the mothers and nannies who say that they spend their life on their cell phone, does it really get to the point where your child begins to talk to strangers while you are standing next to them, and you don't even care? I don't think so.

I think it is normal for children to talk to strangers when they are with a grownup they feel comfortable with. The other day at a doctor's appointment, my child started singing with this lady and her husband and chattering with them.

More than likely the nanny had spent the rest of the day talking to the child.

To be a mother,it is very important to communicate with her child, otherwise,it will be very difficult for mother to know her child and educate her child.

I agree, MinuteMuggle. My charges talk to other adults all the time. I listen to make sure it's appropriate, but how else are they going to learn to socialize with all types of people unless they get the opportunity to do so.

Where did anyone say that?

I said that, TC, because this is the picture I formed from OP's report. I wasn't there, but neither were any of the other posters. I don't understand why everybody had to take OP down.

I know who said it I was being sarcastic. No one said they spent their lives on the phone and I don't think anyone is condoning that behavior either. Demanding a nanny be fired because she was on her cell phone is ludicrous and THAT is why everyone is so 'down' on the nanny
