I am a nanny with four years experience. I have an associates degree in child development. I have a valid drivers licence and a passport so I can and do travel with the family I work for. I spent my summers working as a lifeguard on the Oregon beach. I get paid $16.50 per hour, on the books by the family I work for. I take my charges to the park and set up picnic lunches on the grass and chase them around the playground. Everywhere I am surrounded by nannies who have no discernable qualifications or personality and don't move or even respond appropriately to their charges. Many of these women are from the Caribbean, none of them swim, most of them have been educated no further than the 8th grade and none of them drive. Yet, the bulk of them are making $15 per hour. Cash. No taxes. They are making more than I am! I am not a part of their clique, but I have overheard plenty. I don't understand why it continues to be acceptable for people to pay their nannies under the table. Thanks for letting me rant.
