Regarding the "momtini" article. I would speculate that MOST people do not have drinking problems. But for those who do, it is an addiction and it strikes me as odd that in yet another environment there would be pressure to drink! The alcoholic mom who goes home with a buzz isn't going to be able to stop drinking. I personally find this to pretty low brow, yet another avenue for posers to attempt to emulate what they think the upper class is up to. Pathetic.
I'll have a glass of wine or a cocktail at a late evening playdate. Most of the dinner parties I host are with other couples & their kids and we drink then too. Nothing wrong with a glass or 2 of booze.
I would say yes there is a problem with drinking at afternoon playdates! Buzzed driving is drunk driving. And many of these moms have o0lder kids that have lessons and what have you- later in the day. I don't want these lushes on the road! Have some self respect. Once you decide to be a parent, your entire life should not be about getting your drink on!

I'm the late afternoon playgroup drinker who posted at 6:42, and by drinker I mean 1 or 2 glasses of wine.
You've forgotten that some of us live in cities where we don't drive. Our playdates are literally 1 or 2 houses over, or maximum a couple of city blocks. There is no driving after drinking.
Also, if a playdate is from 4:30 - 5:30, you have a glass or 2 of wine, then go home to serve dinner at 6 and the kid is in bed by 7 and sleeps until 7 the next day....
Totally doable. Unless you're the type who gets smashed on 1 or 2 glasses, then of course it's not.
I guarantee the day anyone gets smashed is the day disaster will strike, like a sudden high fever that requires a trip to the ER. No thanks!
You put your kids to bed by 7 and they sleep through til 7 the next day? Does that happen naturally or do you drug them?
I'm a nanny for a SAHM. She does not handle the playdates, I do. Is it okay for me to suck down 1 or 2 glasses of merlot or a vodka gimlet? I work on the UES & I am pretty confident in my ability to handle; even the bulky side by side while buzzed. Your thoughts?

I don't know of any respectable professions where one can drink on the job, so no -- that would not be OK.

12 hours is normal for my kiddo, naturally. That does not include the nap either, but we're down to 1 hour for that.

I hear you! So sick of these nannies thinking that they can get away with everything the parent can. Yes, mommies read magazines at the park but when I send my child to the park with the nanny, it is so she can play with him!
On drinking: I don't personally drink although I used to when I was younger. It's just a personal choice. I guess it has to do with the fact that my husband is a recovering alcoholic. We just don't do it at all.
I don't think it's a big deal if parents drink 2 or less drinks at a playdate as long as there is a designated driver among each party involved. If there were ever an emergency and there wasn't a sober driver (by sober I mean someone who was not drinking at all) I think that is a big problem.
