Whole Foods in Greenwich, CT (Parking Lot)

Received Wednesday, February 21, 2007
At about 4:45 on Tuesday, I saw what I believe was a nanny (very light skinned African American, stocky, very pretty face) on a RED razor cellphone in the parking lot of Whole Foods on Putnam Avenue in Greenwich. The nanny was talking on the phone AND trying to write something down while walking though the middle row of the parking lot. She was carrying one bag as was the child in her care who could not have been more than 3 years old. The problem was the child who was struggling with the bag was about four steps behind the nanny. The child must have tipped his bag or something because a (I think) block or wedge of cheese dropped to the floor. The little boy couldn't see it because of the bag, so he kicked it. This went under the rear of a large BMW 4X4 and the little boy without hesitating bent to reach for it. The BMW was ON at the time and someone was sitting in the driver seat (albeit waiting for someone). I yelled out "hey, hey, hey" and pointed. Not very articulate but it was all I could get out. The nanny turned and looked at the child who had just put the cheese or whatever it was back in the bag. She stopped very casually and said "come on sweetums, catch up". As if nothing had even happened. Parents, please regardless of who takes care of your children-talk to your children about the parking lot safety; that way even if the nanny is distracted they will still be able to take care of themselves. (Not that they should). The little boy was wearing a black and grey down looking jacket (very large jacket). His hair was dark brown and seemed to be combed forward. Sorry I can't give a better description. Hopefully the location and the nanny's distinct phone will help the parents in identifying their child.

so the nanny behaved when caught pretty much the same way I act when I fall down in public and someone sees me. Got to get up and pretend it didn't happen.

why is a 3 or 4 year old in charge of carrying the groceries? I can carry the bags and hold my child's hand!

Greenwich Nannies make about 1K a week, so this is pretty unforgivable!

And to think that I am struggling to find a nanny job...That people like her make good people like me look bad!

Even if she made 1 dollar a week it's pretty unforgivable.

who is this mysterious-ever-wise JMT? I must know.

What difference does the nannies salary make? Why not keep the child in a cart throughout the parking lot while trying to juggle the groceries.

the nanny probably didn't use a cart because how could she manage her writing and talking at the same time. not like she could have the kid push the cart. no salary doesn't matter. but if you can afford to buy your produce at whole foods, you can afford to import your nannies from Boston.
That's right. Boston.

Why Boston?

Boston has a core of very professional, career oriented nannies. Obviously, you can't hire any old schmo from Boston but the greatest percentage of educated and professional nannies is actually in Boston.

9:18 am As an educated and professional nanny in NYC I must disagree. Boston (a nice little college town) nannies may be good, but we nannies in the Big Apple (the greatest city on earth) deal with greater challenges! However, you will never lure us to Greenwich.

I think the Polish Nanny Community is huge is Greenwich. I don't know why.

Safety first, last and always.

Greenwich nannies make $1000/weekly? rarely. I think people are too interested in other people's lives, and not paying nearly enough attention to their own, or how they can & should improve their own skills.

I'm a greenwich nanny and I make $1500 a week, so suck on that salty egg, bitches!

I think your comment is disgusting(ps)
You better thank God for what you have because someone else could very well step up and take your job.
Your words are awful.
A note to parents that must work and have nannies care for your children.
"Install cameras" and download them on your smartphone,
They are very inexpensive at Best Buys and takes MINUTES to install.
IT IS WORTH THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILDREN
Children see and hear everything and before you know it they too may repeat "Bad" habits.
Take responsibility of your children.
They cannot ever be replace!
Thank God for them and watch over all those who you leave responsible for them

We have a regular customer who is a female, of African American descent with two children, both of whom appear Caucasian - they are biracial. Her husband does not always accompany her on shopping trips. Did it ever occur to you that just because you saw a women with two children that appeared a different race - that they were most likely her own - or adopted?
I have a feeling it was the customer I have in mind but just because you see an African American women with two light skinned children - DOES NOT automatically equate to her being a nanny. To highlight the obvious stereotyping going on here: Not only wealthy Caucasians shop at whole foods -- we are a company that appreciates and celebrates diversity. Bi-racial children do not always take on the dominate genes (Dark hair, dark eyes, dark skin)sometimes recessive traits of one parent end up being expressed, sometimes biracial children don't even share the same skin pigment with their siblings.
Moreover - folks do adopt outside their race. Now, should a mother be paying more attention to her children - well yes. But everyone has days where their attention is on other stresses (obviously it should always be on your children - because if its not that's when something will happen - but it's not realistic - it happens. If anything that should be what this "chatter" should be focused on. Not African American at whole foods with white children - must be a nanny! I might add that some nannies probably take better care of children just as well and in some cases better than mothers do. Some mothers understandable need nannies because they're in a career where they need help, I get that. Also I hardly believe nannies are the lazy, unsafe folks you all are making them out to be. If they were you wouldn't trust them with your children period - and people who go into a career taking care of children generally aren't monsters.
