Lounge at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in NYC

Received Tuesday, February 20, 2007
I was meeting my fiance for drinks last night at the Lounge in the lobby of the Mandarin Oriental, but I was running late by 15 minutes. I arrived to find him chatting with a young female. My fiance immediately introduced me to "Holly" and explained that Holly was a nanny for a family in San Fransisco and had traveled here with the family and this was her last night in NYC. I asked how old the children she watched were. She said she watched one girl who had just turned two. She said this was her first time to New York and I said "and you want to spend your last night sitting in the Lobby Bar?". She then explained that she and the two year old had a seperate room from the parents and that she had snuck out after she got the girl to sleep but didn't want to go "too far". Are you kidding me? Are you seriously kidding me? And no, the rooms were not adjoined! What would happen when that little girl woke up???

So what did you say or do?
How could she leave a two year old unattended? Could you go to security? Most of all, how could someone be in charge of a toddler and be that stupid? Was she just that young and selfish?

What did you say to her? What did you do?

And you chose not to go to the front desk and report a 2 year old child left alone because......????

These types of posts are so frustrating. It's easy to complain about a brainless, irresponsible babysitter, but lady, what does that make you?

even if she was throwing the mack at your boyfriend, that is still way wrong!

I would have had to of found out the parents names and then gotten their room number to alert them to this...that's outrageous. Especially in a hotel that isnt child proofed, who knows what could have happened if the child woke up. Not to mention the people in the adjuacent room that have to listen to a screaming kid because she woke up alone in a strange place.

Well the nanny travels with the parents but shares a room with the 2 year old. Obviusly the parents priorities are S out of whack. I have a nanny. She does travel with us. But I think sharing a room with a nanny is just gauche.

I am a nanny of a little boy (almost one yr.) who travels extensively with the family. Rarely are the rooms connected. The child and I almost always share a room. I am floored! I would never leave the room. I bring books, laptop, something... you don't get to leave.

The poster was wrong not to report it. She is as stupid and neglectful as that nanny.
sheesh where does it all end?

the bucks stops where it starts.
with the parents who hire the nanny. yeah the OP was wrong. Maybe she did do something. Who knows. Maybe her fiance wouldn't let her because he thought she was acting out of jealousy. Maybe they encouraged Holly to get the hell back to her room.

Hire the BEST Nannies you can for your children. There is a huge difference between a good nanny and a GREAT Nanny.

You know what I am talking about.

Call me.

You should have called Steve Bartelstein about this one.

Being a nanny, I would never do that. that is just unforgivable! I hate walking 2 cars away to put a cart back int he stall with the kid in the car.

What would she have done if the parents had come down and seen her.

thats not excusable.

If I were the OP, along with being worried about the welfare of this child, I would also be worried about why my fiance was chatting up some "young female".

11:10 YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD...I ALSO FOUND IT VERY ODD THAT SHE WAS NOT WORRIED ABOUT HER FIANCE. YES THIS NANNY SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO SECURITY..SHE SHOULD HAVE HAD A TALK WITH HER FIANCE...OH WELL

what is with the all caps posting?
Laziness?

If I was the person in this scenario, I probably would have been pissed that my fiance was chatting up some young thing. Of course, it would be in poor taste to let the fiance know I was at all "worried".

If you're a woman and you express the slightest doubt about your partner, they are so quick to call you "jealous, insecure, needy" and my favorite, "crazy".

Wow. This is a serious incident without question. I would have said something directly to the nanny such as "if you continue sitting down here I will have to alert someone in this hotel that there is a two year old alone in his room with his nanny AWL. Sometimes you just have to act. Sometimes you even make an enemy.

All warning her would do is send her packin' back to the room......until next time.

This nanny should not have a next time.

i don't see anything wrong with him. children below 3 are often given a cot (which they can't climb out off). when they are at home, they sleep ALONE. The nannies don't sleep with them!

The Nanny is also likely carrying a baby monitor.

My host family go for dinner and leave the baby alone (I don't go on vacations with them) in the room . They carry the baby monitor with them. Personally, it's something I would never do but on the other hand, they are also correct when they say that it's really no different from being home and downstairs watching tv. They're still within range of the baby monitor.

if there was a baby monitor, i am sure it would have been referenced.
and this is NYC - you don't leave babies alone in a room. Not that a responsible person would do that anywhere. MONITOR or not. How could a monitor be effective in a NYC hotel with all of the interference?

You are just ridiculous! Just because the people you work for have showed you how to properly neglect children doesn't mean you should be on here preaching about it.

Monitor or not. its not like your home!! how many people do you know share thier house with thousands of stranger!! Sex offenders unfortunately are smart jerks, {people}. It only takes a instants for something bad to happen.Fire,a employee with a master key that can get into any room!! What are these people thinking or should I say not thinking. These parents should be turned into the local child abuse center!!! The nanny needs to fine a different job that dose not include taking care of any child, animal or senior citizen.she needs to grow up and learn more about the real world.try taking more classes in her profession. I can't believe that real parents/nanny would actually believe that a montior in the room and carrying with them is really a good thing. be real how often do they work in your home. I just want to slap you people. I hope they read this and wake up its your baby he counts on you to protect him and teach him right from wrong!!Please take parent classes to help you learn how to be better parents, for your child if you really love him!!! I'm a mother of seventeen year old boy and a daughter fifteen and a nanny for over fifteen years.I think I have the right to call all of you jerks and tell you to go get help soon!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know being a parents is hard, but you only get one chance.

So did the nanny gave your husband to be her number? Now that would of been a great story.
