Parker Hill Playground Boston, Mass

Received Saturday, September 30, 2006
I saw something on Friday at Parker Hill Playground in Brookline. I was with the jog stroller and walking by two nannies and one of them was eating out of a can of mixed nuts. The other nanny had a boy who was between 18 months and 2 1/2 years, with dark hair and blue eyes. I heard the nanny who was in charge of the child tell the other nanny to "eat them away from him, he's allergic". With this, nanny #2 moved the can from her lap to the right side of her, "away" from him. And that seemed to be that. I have a niece with a tree nut allergy and we don't keep nuts in our home. We certainly would allow someone who was for all intents and purposes "picknicking" with her to be noshing on a giant can of nuts. Would you?

Nut allergies are serious business. It is the parent's repsonsibility to make this known!

Totally irresponsible. If I were you, I so what have butted in and said something. Too many tragedies occur and often because of stupid, stupid mistakes like this one based on ignorance and indifference.

We don't know the extent of the allergy, but one must presume that if a child has a lifethreatening allergy, the parents would have informed the nanny just how much distance the child needs where nuts are concerned. If the nanny had reason to be terribly concerned about the possibility of a severe allergy attack, she probably would've said "oh, put those away, he's allergic, he can't be anywhere near nuts." If it's just a "don't touch" allergy, as MOST are, moving them out of the child's reach was sufficient.
