From a Regular - Good Nanny Has Fun Sometimes And Can Use Tips On Hangover Prevention

Went to watch some games at a local bar with my boyfriend tonight. I drank more than I normally do when I have to work the next day. Any tips for a hangover when you are a nanny? I won't be drunk and probably no hangover, I normally don't get them. But I would to hear what you have to say !!!

Really? Are we that desperate for submissions? Does helping a nanny deal with a hangover qualify in any way as protecting children?!

I pretty much submit everything. She is a regular contributor and yes I did a double take. Instead of making it about me and the blog - please tell the person what you think!

My own advice would be that some positions have a big moral quality - ie you don't want your doctor with a hangover and you don't want your nanny with one - the job is too important.

But having said that any adult can make a decision to do something questionable on their own time - so if she feels she is partying a little too hard with her boyfriend - be sure and hydrate with lot's of water, make sure you have a designated driver and take some vitamins - I think I sent her some emergen-C

OP here
I only live once was not a good title for this. Yes, I made a bad decision by drinking the night before but I also said I wouldn't be drunk the next day and since I don't normally get a hangover I would probably be fine. (I didn't have a hangover either btw) I wasn't wasted, i didn't go out partying. I got a good buzz going that night. I decided to send in a submission because even though I was 98% sure I would be okay in the morning I thought maybe it could help another reader. I don't appreciate my feeling like I'm not a good nanny because I drank the night before. I was just looking for tips incase I was feeling a little hungover, which I wasn't. Also, I've read way worse things on this blog in the past than someone asking for tips for a hangover. O was asking so I could perform my job better if I ended up having one.

...my advice would be to drink lots of water. At least 2 gallons before going to sleep - this will clear your system of alcohol so you usually won't suffer a hangover/be drunk the next day. If you are unwell (drunk) the next day, call sick. While I've never worked hangover, high, drunk or whatever, I have worked when sick (the kids and parents were sick too with the same thing), had migraine, had a bout of insomnia the night before (entire 2 weeks once!) or even finals coming up! This is normal life stuff that may come up and will make you less than your 100%, and it is fine. Most families understand that, they themselves usually work for living, and know they aren't their 100% at work everyday either.
Most important thing, I believe is to keep that 'crazy YOLO night' thing private from your professional life - including social media. Don't do anything too crazy and get your picture taken. Other than that, have fun on your time off.

Ah! For the next morning fixes I only know of strong coffee (lots) and painkillers as well as lots of water. I only had a hangover once, when I was 16 and sneaked a bottle of vodka with my the bff. I threw up once, and couldn't eat breakfast due to upset stomach but was fine by 9-10am. When my boyfriend gets even slightly buzzy he has a terrible hangover with headache, stomach pains, etc for an entire next day, so truly people metabolize alcohol differently. I sometimes can drink an entire bottle of good wine with a meal and be 100% next morning so I feel people are overreacting a little to this. Maybe it's the title that's so overboard?

I will change the title. I meant it with support for the Op - you only live once and you should be able to have fun on your own hours in your own life. I also admired the Ops honesty in asking for advice. It's not a good idea to drink "too much" before a work day but it's wise to ask for advice.
One I forgot to say is to make sure to eat something before or during the fun, drinking on an empty stomach is not a good idea

But I mean you're an adult...this honestly seems like a question I would get from one of my charges. You drank. Ok deal with it. A hangover?throw up, Eat breakfast drink coffee and water and deal with a headache through your shift. Common sense. All common sense.

Or, don't get drunk before you go to work. Under any circumstance. It's called being an adult. Not trying to flame anyone (seriously, I'm not), but this is a dumb question.

Anonymous - yes! Exactly! ;)

And Rebecca - I never said you weren't a good nanny. And nobody makes you feel anything. If my comment (which said nothing about you at all) "made" you feel like you weren't a good nanny, that's your own voice talking. If you're looking for somebody to say it's okay, we all do it or it happens to everybody - it doesn't, and this is probably the wrong venue to look for affirmation. You're the one who said it was a bad decision. Learn from it, move on, and if youre already a good nanny, use what you learned to become even better. :)

Drink two gallons of water before you go to bed? That's potentially lethal. Google hyponatremia.

I honestly like this post. I do after school sitting, nannying isn't my whole life, and I go out.

I'm NEVER like under the influence around children or what have you, but there have been days where I feel less than perfect and I don't want to look like someone who was partying last night. I don't ever want to show up anywhere looking hungover, but I especially don't want to look hungover around children that I am responsible for the safety of.

My tips are 1. Drinking less obviously, 2. Water and Aspirin before bed. 3. Make sure you shower and put a little extra effort into your appearance that day.

Charcoal Lemonade is my saving grace. I'm not sure where you live but in LA I get mine from Juice Served Here of Pressed Juicery and I think you can order from both online!!

The wise say never to look for a cure, look for prevention. Well I use Detoxicated to help prevent experiencing hangover symptoms and it works great for me. You can find them online or on Amazon. Best hangover cure
