Tips For Overnight Assignment

I have my 1st night nanny job coming up. I will be working for one particular family 8pm-8am with a newborn. Any tips on how to keep up my stamina during those hours. I will be sleeping during the day not while the baby sleeps. It's also 3-4 days a week so I will get some regular sleep on my days off.

Looking for tips or advice for anyone who has done a similar shift. So far I have planned healthy snacks and Starbucks to go packets. TU!!!

Do the employers require you to stay up all night while baby is sleeping? Not sure if I understand this logic if you sleep with a baby monitor next to you assure the parents that you will get up with baby during the night, not sure why they wouldn't agree to that. It's worth a try to ask. If you are not a night shift person I hope you are going to be paid good. If they do not agree to let you sleep yes lots of Starbucks, good books, movies & homework. Good luck!

It will be for a newborn baby girl starting two days after she is born. They want someone to be up with the baby at night. So no I don't think sleeping when does will be an option. It pays very well and is only for 6 weeks.

That is ridiculous. Why in the world isn't mom getting up with her own baby? She's on maternity leave if she works.

Kat - seriously? Maybe she had a difficult pregnancy and needs to heal and recover. Maybe she is dealing with PPD. Maybe she doesn't function well on very little sleep and would prefer to be fully alert and present with baby during the day. Maybe she can afford a nanny and wants to get some sleep.

I don't understand the judgemental comments directed towards parents for no other reason than hiring a nanny. It seems strange, considering that most of us are nannies...

Try to take a 1 1/2 to 2 hour nap (on your first work night of the week) starting around 3pm. Wear a sleep mask and listen to white noise or a fan (something to block outside noise out). Jump in the shower after your nap to wake yourself up more. If you're a coffee drinker, drink it with your dinner INSTEAD of your breakfast. When you get home, eat breakfast and go to bed until 5pm or so. Good luck :-)
