Ready to leave nannying...
I need advice on how to give my family notice that I will be leaving. I have been with them for about two years, but am ready to take the next step in my life and find a career outside of nannying. When I took this position, the parents asked me to give them three weeks notice should I decide to leave. My issue right now is that I am currently looking for a new job, but have no idea how long it will take before I find something. It could be a week, and it could be a month. I am concerned that needing three weeks before starting a new position will hurt my chances of finding a new job. I don't want to miss out on a potentially great job just because I need to give my family three weeks notice. I would love to tell my family that I am looking now, but am afraid it will take me a while to find something new and that they will find a new nanny, and I will be out of a job completely, which I absolutely cannot afford. I need some guidance on how to handle this situation - I am completely stressed out! Thank you so much!

Two weeks notice is standard. Any job that will not allow you to give that to your current employer is not a job worth having. I would tell your employer right away that you're looking and will let them know if you decide to take an offer. You'll want to use them as a reference, anyway. No one reasonable will hold it against you for trying to better your situation. Finding good childcare often takes much longer than 3 weeks.
If you agreed to 3 weeks notice you should honor that. It's not only hard for families to find a replacement that works but can be emotional for the children when a nanny leaves. You should save up a little money so if you tell them and they find someone within that 3 weeks you have money to fall back on until you get another job. Just tell them if you haven't found anything within the 3 weeks and they still are interviewing you would be more then happy to stay a little longer.
Never give notice until you've secured another job. Too many Employers have screwed over the nanny who is leaving.
I wouldn't give notice until I had another job lined-up, especially if you're concerned that they would fill your position. But when you find your new job, I would let your future employer know that you committed to giving 3-weeks notice. I'm not sure what field you're planning to go into, but as an educator, I've always informed future employer that I was committed to giving my previous employer ample notice, and I've never been turned away from a job because of it. My decision to do so was always respected. Good luck in your job search.
