Atypical Tips

OPINION
Hello all, I have been a babysitter since I was 14 and a nanny since I was 21. I am 24 years old now and I have received quite a few "tips" along with my pay: 1) a bag of Victoria Secret bras and panties (the mom works in Victoria secret) 2) a burrito and a bottle of Tequila 3) a bag full of chocolate milk. I was wondering who else has received weird "tips"? - Anonymous

I've gotten an iphone docking station and a digital photo frame. They had received them as gifts and didn't need/want them so they passed them off to me. I took them gladly!

My MB just gave me a stash of her old handbags, some Coach, some Banana Republic...I took them and passed them off to my mom and sister. My husband and I also bought a home a few months ago and MB offered 4 different chandeliers to me. When we bought our home I received a $100 goftcard to HomeGoods which was nice. Beggers can't be choosers but I'm still not sure how I feel being offered her secondhand stuf. It was awkward....no shame in my game! I still took the handbags..had to pass on the chandeliers.

Whether she wprks there or not I would find the Vickie's slightly uncomfotable!

Tonight I had a play date with my charges and another mom that I regularly babysit for. She gave me food to take home for dinner. Sometimes its food, other times I've gotten booze, gift cards to restaurants, sports tickets, water bottles, etc

It seems like your family is really laid back...which I think is quite cool.

FFXnan, ahh - I'm so jealous! I don't care if the bags are used, I'm a big shoe whore, LOL, and an even BIGGER bag whore! My worst "tip" was some used make-up! Can you say GROSS?!

My boss last year worked for Colgate, so she was always receiving samples of different health & beauty products. I received a nice Clinque sample set with mascara, under-eye cream, and eye make-up remover. She also provided me with plenty of toothpaste, and she gave my long-distance boyfriend some sample sizes of body wash, toothpaste, etc. for when he traveled to visit me.

When she cleaned out her closet before we moved, she let me look through the clothes before she took them to goodwill. I chose an expensive suit (like, probably $500 new) and a cute blouse. When my oldest charge got rid of some clothes too (all three of us were the same size), I took a pair of shorts and a t-shirt.

Plus I was live-in, so I benefited from lots of little things, like reading their magazine subscriptions and sharing nail polish colors with my oldest charge.

A family I babysat for brought home a super drunk friend of theirs who offered to, right then and there, "wax your pussy". Mom said "OH she's the BEST! You should let her!"

I left. Fast.

I am dark skinned and once I got a bright green sweater. I knew right away she bought it on some Gap clearance.

I got a oversize shirt inside a black plastic bag from a boss who clearly lacked common sense. She said I could exchange at the little store down the street and just describe her to the owner (she didn't have a receipt). I just threw it away.

I know what you mean about those "thoughtless" gifts. Sometimes it is better to not just give a gift to someone than give a gift that sucks.

I once was given a horrible + ugly sweater for X-mas. The thread was coming off and unraveling and the color was hideous. I am sure it was taken from the clearance rack. However, the giver made sure to keep the price tag on it... it said it was like $30. Yeah right. They probably peeled off the marked down tags that went to $1. LOL.

My MB offered me some of her old maternity shirts... I'm not pregnant, just larger than most and maternity sizes are not the same as plus sizes. She was trying but I may be the first fat person she has been around very much. Oh well some people don't understand.

I had a drunk MB who owned a cosmetic company and actively discouraged my snacking from their fridge on babysitting nights, but wanted me to try on her various new nail polishes while she was out.

One of my old MBs got rid of clothes once and gave me several things. I wound up keeping a couple, but most weren't actually things I'd wear... took them to a local consignment shop and made about $80.

I have received pieces of delicious tiramisu, lots of Johnson and Johnson and Neutrogena products (MB works for the company), little things around the house that they don't want but that are often new such as a reed diffuser, books, etc. I've never recieved anything that I thought was inappropriate (I would be uncomfortable with the underwear) and I have never felt insulted by anything that they have offered. I have received actual bonuses and gifts that were picked especially for me as well but these are just little added things that I have been given or offered.
