Is it ok to see if a family will pay on the books prior to an interview? I'm talking about exchanging emails. I'd rather not go on an interview only to find out they want to pay under the table. Waste of gas to me. I want to be on the books because I need a record of employment to file for student aid.

Don't know if it's professional or not by I try and find out before setting an interview , or during a pre-in person phone call if I'm on the own , and the agency I'm with knows not to offer me interviews unless everything is legal.

If you are not with an agency, then by all means it is acceptable to ask whether the family plans to pay you on the books or under the table. It would be a waste of gas/time if you waited until the interviews.

Thanks for contacting me Mrs. X. I am looking forward to speaking with you about your ad seeking a nanny. I would like to clarify something before we begin further discussions. Will you be paying on the books through a payroll company or with the help of a do-it-yourself website?

Mrs. X. will then either stammer and stutter, or will say clearly what her plan is for legal pay.

It's absolutely ok to ask this question prior to the interview.

I have never thought to ask this question prior to interviewing. But I guess if you are really that concerned with wasting gas, why not have an over-the-phone interview before meeting in person? That way you can get all the essentials out of the way first and narrow down your choices to the people you really would consider working for. I kind of think it would seem presumptuous to ask about pay and taxes in the first email.
