Trader Joe's - Chelsea, Manhattan, NY

bad nanny sighting I don't normally comment or get upset but today while I was at Trader Joe's I noticed a nanny with a baby in a stroller who wasn't strapped in. I saw her multiple times and am positive the child wasn't strapped at all. The nanny was a bit chubby, wearing a Giants t-shirt, Hispanic maybe? It was an Uppa Baby Vista stroller and had an apartment building valet ticket #7337. It was at the TJ's in Chelsea at 1:30 pm. I'd be livid if my nanny didn't strap one of my children in!

I didn't want to take up anymore space on the Blog by making another Post for this message... but for those of you that have Submissions waiting, please be patient.

I have several that need to be Published and am trying to space them out so that each gets attention.

Traffic has been increasing in record numbers for some reason... not that I am complaining!

Thank you!

I don't really understand what the problem is. Just that the child wasn't strapped in? I go places and sometimes don't strap my charge into the stroller. Was he falling out of the stroller? Was he being dragged on the stroller?

How old was the child? When I was a nanny for a toddler, I sometimes didn't strap her in, but she was old enough to know not to get out unless I told her she could.

Ohh the horror! That nanny deserves to be arrested! How dare she endanger a child like that! She should be locked up for years!

This isn't bashing is it? ;)

Does it make me a bad, awful nanny that after a certain age I rarely strap the kids in? If the child knows not to go anywhere and it's the aisles of a grocery store? I probably wouldn't have either...

These days stroller straps are so frickin' complicated at times...that I just say "Forget it" and put the child in and leave.

This is not really a big deal and could be me with my charge(s) on any given day.

Why is this an issue in a store?

I don't always strap my charges in. My two year old knows better than to jump out of the stroller, plus at his age, he wants to be in and out and in and out. I rarely bother with the straps. If my one year old isn't being a wiggle worm, I don't always strap him in either. When he naps in the back of the double stroller, he likes to roll over on his side, which he can't do strapped in.

The OP did say that the child who wasn't strapped in was a baby. I'd say it depends on age, if they're not walking, I always strap them in and then after they start walking it just depends on their maturity level. It also depends on the stroller type, some of them are so complicated that the kiddos have to do some major gymnastics to fall out of them!

This nanny needs to be fired on the spot!
What if she's speeding around the corner trying to grab the last carton of trader joe hummus and has to stop short because a mother pushing her $1500 bugaboo donkey cuts right in front......poor baby in stroller will go flying over the empty hummus display :( *tear*

Thanks a lot Bostonnanny for giving me a major craving for some TJ's hummus. That stuff is freakin' fantastic and we don't have a Trader Joe's around here. :(

I never used a stroller for J: I would use a cart for major shopping and let him walk/run through the store for small purchaes.

Depending on the age of the toddler, he would be strapped in.

Just to play devil's advocate here, I'm going to agree with the OP-slightly.

My cousin's son was 1 and a half, and fell out of a stroller onto concrete. Head first. He needed stitches on his forehead. She was not quite fast enough to catch him from her post behind the stroller.
For the record, he began walking at 9 months, so he was definitely able to walk at the time. This was the first time he had ever really leaned out of the stroller-and that's what happened.

Since then, she has been rather vigilant about strapping him in, even if it is just the waist band. Sometimes those over the shoulder ones are complicated and time consuming, but there needs to be some sort of restriction. They may be good listeners, but you just never know. In a grocery store, there's a lot going on, and kids are likely to be interested.

So, while it may not be a huge deal to everyone, it can happen. No parent wants to get a call that some accident like this happened. And no nanny wants to have that hanging over their head.

I always strap my child in. She is four and still uses the stroller when she gets really tired and we are traveling. I keep it in the trunk of the vehicle.

I think not strapping a child into a stroller is foolish, and if I found out my nanny was not doing it, while I would not fire her (lol) I would explain to her why it was important to me that she strap my child in at all times.

For those of you saying this is a silly issue, I disagree. The strap is there for a reason. It is meant to prevent accidents.

There's only one thing...some moms are ok with that.
I am a nanny and I used to work for this lady who comes here every other year and she told me that her child was uncomfortable being strapped in the stroller.
I was terrified of walking around Downtown L.A. with the 3 year old unstrapped!
I even tried to strap the girl in the stroller but she protested, so I walked around the way she wanted. Never had a problem.

I think that this posting is a little bit funny. I always strap the baby into the stroller but just this morning while walking preschooler to school, three people (parents and teachers) at the school told me that the baby either looked unhappy being buckled or that the mom never buckles him because he doesn't like to be restrained and so I should unbuckle him!!!

Needless to say, I ignored all of their advice and kept the baby buckled b/c the same personality traits that cause him to be unhappy being buckled would cause him to fling himself out of the stroller when he decides he doesn't want to ride anymore!!

I'm a mom and once my son hit around 18 months he could unbuckle himself. It's not that serious
