"I'm Outta Here!"

Received Tuesday, January 18, 2011
rant I have a rant for you. I provide part-time childcare for three families in their homes. I love two of them. I've been with them long-term, the parents treat me well and I've bonded with the children. But I am over dealing with Family #3. I took the job five months ago--$120 to take care of three young children for 10 hours per week. Here's how it's going...

First of all, there are also two school-agers, so when they're not in school I have to take care of 5 children instead of 3 for the same pay. Second, the mother calls me rather often and tells me that something came up and she won't need me to come that day. Or week. Or last time, two and a half weeks. On the other hand there are also times when they need me to work 35 hours/week and pay me $200. An extra $80 for an extra 25 hours?!

The children are not disciplined. Just this morning one of them ate some of his breakfast, then screamed and threw the rest of it on the floor. Then another yelled, "F***er!" And don't even get me started on their home. Stains on the floor and furniture, old food in the toy boxes, dirty dishes in the kitchen, used pull-ups on the bedroom floor, used feminine products on the bathroom floor... I'm looking for another job--looking hard--and as soon as I find one, I'm outta here!

Yeah, I don't blame you a bit. The mean side of me says to not even bother giving them notice (since they don't give you notice when they don't need you). Of course the professional side says give them 2 weeks or as much notice as you can before you start the new job (whichever is least).

I just cannot fathom how people can be so careless (disgusting) when it comes to feminine hygiene products. I have seen this in various situations throughout the years and it never ceases to amaze (disgust) me! A little tissue goes a long way people! Sorry, needed to do a little ranting myself, lol!

LOLZ!! I had an experience too like that. I always do their laundry and their daughter who's a 13 year old spoiled brat girl doesn't even know how to use panty liner or clean herself and every time I have to see her panty it's so yucky!!!!! Then one day the mom talked to me about it that her daughter is complaining that her undies has stains in it and ask me if I hand wash it first because their former nanny do that to her daughters undies and I was like shocked and looking at her saying to myself "WTH seriously you're saying that to me??" and the mom continously saying that "oh maybe she doesn't likecto touch your juice and it's too yucky for her to do that!" I was like you bitch should better start teaching your daughter what a feminine hygiene is and don't expect your nanny to clean after your nastiness!!! These two mom&daughter are gross!!! And think that they are above everyone else!! Spoiled brats!

Cute Nanny,

I would have quit on the spot. Respect...I demand it and they don't obviously believe it in.

Absurd!

@Op: I don't really understand why you are complaining about the salary. Didn't you accept it before starting the job? Obviously you did, so you can't complain now, in my point of view. You have to learn how to negotiate with your employers beforehand!
Your last paragraph I completely understand and wouldn't tolerate any of that behavior when I am around. But since you are only working part time, you don't really get the chance to teach those kids how to behave and act around others.

I wish you all the best for your future!

That is horrible. The parents obviously do not respect you. And cutenanny I agree that is disgusting and I definitely would have quit that job but please learn how to use proper grammar. :)

@Loving Nanny, I disagree that just because someone agrees to work for a certain amount beforehand, then they are bound by that rate forever. Maybe OP accepted the rate based on a variety of factors. Then once she started the job, she realized the pay did not equal the work involved. This has happened to me multiple times. There is not excuse for a family to have a nanny if they cannot provide a clean working environment.
OP,run...do not walk..away from this gross job.

Where did they interview you? A Starbucks? I used to think ppl did that so you don't stalk them or something but now I wonder....

I'm the OP...

First of all, thank you so much for all of your support!

Mad Scientist, you nailed it in regards to my salary! I'm cool with the $120 for the 10 hours per week that we discussed during the interview. The problems started about a month later. I was informed that one of the parents would be out of town for about one week per month, and I would be paid $300 for those times, which I agreed to. Then I was told--at the last minute--that the parent would be taking one of the children along and therefore I would only be paid $200. What?! They can knock $100 off my weekly pay when they leave me with 2 children instead of 3, but they don't give me any extra on days when I have to take care of all 5!

alex - I think you're right about the parents not respecting me. The mother is a diva and somewhat clueless, but the father deals with money for a living... He has to know that he's low-balling and taking advantage of me!
