How to Make Memories...

Friday, November 19, 2010
Opinion 4 Hello, I am leaving a family that I have been with for about two years now and they are like a family to me. I have been going through and trying to find ideas on what to get them and I have decided that i am going to do a scrapbook for the children, i will do the first few pages and then together on future play dates we will complete it. What should I do for the parents? The mom is like an elder sister to me. I will be sitting once a month after I leave. It was a mutual decision also. I wanted to find a career where i could use my nursing degree and she wants to quit her job and be with the kids full time.

As a mom employer, all I would want is the scrapbook or other photo memories. Truly, the work that goes into creating a great scrapbook/photo album is huge and that is what I would value more than anything. It's also a task I am always one step behind on. Maybe one book of memories with you and the kids (for kids) and another of just the best pictures of each child (for parents). I love Blurb for photobooks. One caregiver I had once made a handmade photo collage of tons of pictures cut into different shapes, overlapping and mounted in a roughly 18x24 frame. It is wonderful and mounted prominently in our home still many years later. My final idea would be an offer to video edit our many hours of video into a succinct, organized DVD - only if this is something you would enjoy and be comfortable with. Whatever you choose will, I'm sure, be greatly appreciated as you sound very thoughtful!

For the mother, I think that anything homemade would be great. I like nycmom's idea of something from each child.
I agree..you sound like a great nanny to me.

quick get out the violins! mom wants to stay home with her kids! how old are the kids? I was a nanny and the mom decided to stay home, of course the kids were pre teen and in school all the time, all the hard work/younger years were gone so I guess now was a good time so she wouldnd have to do much!

Gift down, not up. You should gift the children. The employers should gift you.

this year I took my charge to get his portraits taken since his parents never did. I put him in a suit and got the cutest pics, I'm framing them and giving it to them for Xmas. Last year I made a photo book of all the pictures I took of him as a baby. I've also made a photo mug and framed some of his artwork.
Snapfish is great and easy. I thought of doing a scrapbook but I'm not that creative and it takes to long... I'm kinda lazy lol

When I left my nanny family (also having worked for the for about 2 years, and also they were and still are like family) I made a really detailed scrap book (my first scrap book ever, took me weeks to do and I am so proud of how beautifully it turned out!) for them with everything I did with my little guys(Gymboree, Museums, the Zoo, Playdates, parties, Story Time, Art Projects, you name it!) and it went over really well. Plus, it was a nice way for me to go back and remember. I just babysat for them recently, and sat with the kids and went through all of the pages. I wish I had made myself a duplicate!!!
