Old Navy in Manhattan, NY

Received Tuesday, July 13, 2009
nanny sighting logo I was at Old Navy on 6th Avenue & 18th Street in Manhattan on Thursday, July 9th at around 11:30am. There was a little girl of around 2 with light brown hair and a ponytail in a black and light green Aria stroller. Her nanny was black with short hair, an olive green velour sweatsuit and a black beret. The little girl began to cry in the checkout line, because her blanket (white with brown and pink stars) had fallen to the ground (I think she had been asleep) and the nanny, who was paying for her purchases, completely ignored the girl’s wailing for what felt like several minutes (probably 1-2) until a store employee went over and picked up the blanket for the little girl and the nanny realized that people were staring at her. At this point, she went over to the child and comforted her in an overly solicitous and fake way.

This is just silly. You don't know if the nanny was being fake or not because you don't know her personally. The child dropped her blanket and the nanny was busy at the counter paying. This warrants a post on this site?

I take you have no kids? Because most people with a crying little one try to pay as quickly as possible and get out, so as not to hold up the line while trying to calm a possibly inconsolable child.

Actually, along with your revelation that "several minutes" was actually closer to one, I'm going to guess you're one of those people that also gives flustered moms nasty looks when their child dares to make a peep in your presence.

You know what OP, you know what you saw--and in your opinion this wasn't a great nanny...if you had that opinion, chances are there was some reason for concern. So, thank you for posting this. I hope the parents see it.

I agree with momkat. Why not trust OP that everyone else witnessing the girl's crying would have done something to help her, while her own nanny did absolutely nothing. Ridiculous.

And it's gross that everyone is jumping all over the op yet again.

"Why not trust OP".

Because I don't know the OP, and someone could be fired based on a post. An OP may post something they honestly found disturbing, but misunderstand the situation. If the parents see that some responses are skeptical about the seriousness of the post, maybe they will look into it, rather than panic and fire a nanny unfairly.
I don't think this was necessarily a bad nanny, based on what OP posted. If the parents see this, they may or may not agree, and if they are concerned, let's hope they have a way of checking up on the nanny.

Manhattan Nanny,
All this is, is information for the parents--if they happen to see it on this board. I would hope that no parent would fire a nanny for the type of minor incident the OP describes. Or, for anything posted on this board for that matter. But this board provides a valuable service because it is information--information that the parents can take as they wish, and evaluate and investigate on their own. I would hope that having other posters question the OP wouldn't be the only reason a parent wouldn't fly off the handle and fire a nanny on the spot. Presumably they have a relationship with the nanny, have entrusted her with their precious offspring...and would again use this as information...one piece of a bigger puzzle.

Momkat,
I agree with you for the most part, but the sad reality is, not all employers are level headed, or have much of a relationship with their nanny. (Look at the "Spoon Fed Bottle Drinking 6 Year Old" post for example.) People have been known to fly off the handle and fire nannies based on inadequate, or misinformation.

Manhattan Nanny, I hardly think the nanny would be fired if the parents read this post on this website, but if they were likely to do so, the ridiculous posters questioning the OP will hardly prevent it.

But your comment does shed new light for me on why there are often a bunch of idiots jumping all over OPs.

why would you hire a black nanny if your kids are white????
