There are times when I read a story in the news when I think a lynch mob should just form up and take care of the problem permenantly.

agreed, dad. :(

Good Lord. I will never understand the attitude that females are at fault when attacked. That poor child. :-(

That poor little girl. How horrible for her that her family won't even take her back so now she's with strangers.

I think the other kids should be charged as adults too. They've destroyed that little girl's life.

OMGosh! I have never cried while reading a news story before, but I did after just reading the title of that poor little girl's story. And then I was bawling when I read her family shunned her. My gosh, that poor, poor little girl. I am so glad CPS decided to keep her so that she'll have a tiny chance of being able to deal with her trauma in a healthy way. My heart aches for her.

OMG, that poor little girl. I think we, as an entire society, ought to shun her parents. "Take them away. I don't want to look at them." Send them back to Liberia...in a leaky raft.

You hit it dead on!

I am not blaming the children or the parents. But, we have got to make it crystal clear to our children thatYOU DO NOT GO ANYWHERE WITH ANYONE THAT ISN'T MOMMY, DADDY, GRANDMA, GRANDPA ETC.

Here in my area a 16 year old boy lured his 6 year old neighbor, whom he knew, into his basement where he said he had puppies. What 6 year old is not going to want to see puppies with someone they see as a grown up, and someone that they know? They found her duct taped but otherwise fine.

WBN,

I agree, but no matter how much you stress it, what 8 year old would view a 9 year old (who she may have known, it doesn't say) as a threat? It's difficult to teach kids to make friends then also tell them not to talk to or trust other kids.

mom said...

Hey, we ought not teach children to be leary of any situation or any type of person...it may interfere with their carefree childhoods.
(I am being completely sarcastic..but feel the need to point this out, because some people seem to actually believe that.)

ChiNanny said...

Mom,

That is not what I said. I said that it's difficult to teach children, who do not have adult reasoning skills, to differentiate between kids who are a threat and kids who aren't. We want them to talk to kids at the park so they can make friends. We don't want them going with the kids who randomly come up to them and ask them to go in sheds, basements, etc. That is a very difficult differentiation to make, especially for a kid.

Of course we teach them the best we can, I was just pointing out that this "stranger danger" situation is a tricky one because it wasn't a grown up it was a peer.

mom said...

Chi nanny,
Sorry. That wasn't directed at you. I see nothing on this thread I disagree with.
I am referring to the other thread a few days ago that turned into a discussion about abducted children. (And I don't even remember who said what on there...although I thought there were a few comments that were aimed at keeping kids dangerously unaware of the potential things they might face if not taught basic "stranger danger" rules.)

Sorry for the confusion. I should remember that not everybody reads every single thread....especially since I don't always read all of them myself.

OH, and you're also right, Chi nanny. I, for the life of me, don't know how you would prepare your child for the idea that her similarly aged playmates may one day rape her...at the age of 8!

This story is too sickening to comprehend. Maybe it is really coming to the day when people, at least in certain "more dangerous" neighborhoods, are going to need to regulate exactly which playmates their kids are with at every single moment...completely erasing the last bits of freedom that most of us enjoyed as children where we could simply play outside our homes with the neighborhood kids in relative safety.
It's becoming a sadder and sadder world for our kids. :(

OMG, I can't get past the first one. I'll surely get grief for saying this, but I for one hope the family of that poor girl is here illegally so that "shame" isn't the only thing this brings upon them. Some exposure to the appropriate immigration authorities would be well deserved and they could be given the boot back to where it's acceptable to treat kids this way. If they are allowed to stay here, they should be charged with child abandonment, endangerment and abuse. Then lured into a deserted area and raped. (Sorry, getting carried away, but this makes me very angry).

cali mom said...

Seriously, is it actually legal in Phoenix AZ to just randomly decide you "don't want" your child anymore and walk away from them? If this girl were 8 days old instead of 8 years, would police just nod understandingly and explain matter of factly that it's because of their "culture", therefore no charges can be brought for abandoning a child? I tend to doubt it.

cali mom said...

And yes, I'd like to see all 4 of those boys tried as adults. Their parents may think rape is acceptable if the 8 year old girl "asked for it", but outside of Liberia, the LAW works differently. And we can only imagine how shunned they'd end up by their families after they were raped in prison or juvie hall.

Lola said...

Cali mom, it says the children are refugees, so likely so are their parents. It is sad that the culture in their country is like that. Perhaps refugees should be required to take parenting/culture/social classes upon entry to the U.S.

irish eyes said...

This first case is a case against immigration. Who wants monsters like this running amongst us? I say deport the family, kill the boys, save the girl.

cali mom said...

WTrue, very sad. Well, refugee status should be immediately revoked upon arrest for any crime in the U.S. and I cannot for the life of me understand why it would be NOT illegal to abandon your 8 year old child just because you decide you don't "want" them anymore.

whatev said...

Huh. Irish Eyes. Irish? I guess you're here because of immigration. Oh, and that little girl is an immigrant also.

MinuteMuggle said...

irish,
they are not monsters because they are immigrants. they are monsters because they are rapists.

It is legal in every state in the US to surrender your child to Children's Services. Parents do it all the time. With infants, most states have the added law of being able to leave them at a Fire Station/EMS or a hospital. But yes, any one of us could decide tomorrow we don't want our children, drive down to CPS, sign over our rights to the state, and walk out a childless woman. I for one am GLAD laws like this exist. If they didn't, MANY, MANY more children would be abused/killed/neglected, because the parents would be forced to keep them. If a parent is recognizing that they can't take care of their children, or don't want to, I am glad CPS allows them to sign their rights over to the state. At least then the children have a chance.

All of the boys should be charged as adults, the parents deported, and the girl put into counseling and a loving foster home that may adopt her one day.

How badly off would that little girl be if she had NOT been abandoned?

A father who would shun her for being attacked by 4 little monsters would surely think nothing of doing all sorts of further physical damage to her. Maybe he would feel he had to beat her repeatedly? Maybe he would sell her to another "refugee" as a slave or a prostitute, maybe worse?

And I am all for deporting the child's family as long as SHE doesn't wind up being forced to leave this country as well.

The boys should spend as long as possible in a nasty juvenile center and then be sent back to Liberia.

mom said...

The girl is actually probably better off without them...which is not to say that she will not suffer significant and irreparable emotional damage from having been abandoned. She will feel dirty and bad and unworthy and unlovable. The only saving grace is that she will not have to hear from her family everyday for the rest of her life that she is those things. She will only think them of herself....which a good counselor may or may not be able to correct...probably not entirely in any event.

When I was growing up a girl in my neighborhood who was a bit slow had a gang of boys shove a golf club up inside of her. The boys bragged and bragged, they told their parents and everything. Not ONE parent came forth and said anything!! Years later an anonymous letter was found in their mailbox explaining everything that happened. They confronted their daughter who was now an adult and she admitted everything. She was afraid to say anything back when it happened for fear that the boys would do something worse. The perps are all adults too so there is nothing to be done. Remember Anita R., Nanny Taxi?

Oh my God, I remember that. Poor girl, I wonder what became of her.

Even back then the wackos where out in full force but it was all hush, hush. If this happened today, those kids would have been busted within a day. I hope!
