Should One Who Abandons A Baby Face Charges?
All 50 states have enacted child abandonment laws that protect parents from prosecution. Some are more liberal than others. In New York, the infant has to be 5 days old or less. Nebraska's law, passed this year, allows a parent to abandon a child as old as 19 years.

No, you should not be able to abandon kids...ever. You make 'em, you are responsible for 'em...unless oyu put them up for adoption and give them a chance to have parents who actually want them and will love them. I love the new baby drop locations they now have where a mom can drop a child off at a hopspital, or other designated spot, and not be charged with abandonment. This keeps people from feeling the need to put babies in dumpsters, or other places where they may become sick or die before being rescued. I don't think leaving a child at a baby drop location should even be called abandonment. They should simply consider it an "anonymous adoption."

the dog is totally cute, it just shows how much better a dog can be compared to a human!

I bet lots of parents in Nebraska are considering leaving their snotty teenagers on someone else's doorstep after reading about that law!

So true, Aliana...I was actually thinking the same thing. When the news anchor stated that the: canines motherly instinct was in full charge when she rescued the infant, I actually had to wonder where the human mothers instinct was! (AND, this is just part of the reason why I still struggle to believe that human beings are even remotely 'superior' to many other animals.)

Haha re: ananamama, so true! I actually giggled a bit at abandoning up to a 19 year old! Can you imagine trying to haul your adult child to a "safe drop"! haha I already lived on my own (and was attending University) at the age of 19, I think I would have actually told my parents to get their heads checked if they had even attempted to try this. LOL

However, all joking aside, I think that these designated "drop spots" are a wonderful idea, and I hope that this information becomes more wide spread, as too many young mothers still aren't aware that they do have 'other options'...if it saves a life, I'm all for it!

I don't even see how it would be possib;e to "abandon" a 19 yr old, since at 18, a person is 100% legally independant.

It's pretty incredible that a dog (or any animal) can have a motherly instinct toward a human baby!
