Upper East Side in the 60's, NYC

Received Monday, February 18, 2008
I repeatedly run into a nanny that cares for three children on the Upper East Side in the 60s. The two boys have bright red hair as does their little sister Amelia. One of the boys is named Jack and one of the boys frequently is in a superhero costume of sorts. I have seen the mother as well she has glasses and bright red hair to her shoulders. The nanny leaves the children with other nannies and has asked me twice to watch the baby while she runs upstairs of uses the bathroom. She could bring the stroller with her, but I guess she is trying to make life easier on her. Once she left the baby (when it was maybe only six months) with me and I pulled the stroller sun cover over the baby. She left it staring into the sun. I had NEVER seen the nanny before and didn't understand that she was leaving the area for a few minutes. I wasn't sure what she had said to me before she ran off. One time I was reading a book to my child while we were sitting on a park bench and one of the boys put his head on my shoulder and hand on my breast while I read. I wondered why the nanny didn't get him off of me, but she was on the phone. I wish I would see the mother again. I would love to say something. It's not outright abuse, but the nanny is kind of clued out and irresponsible in my opinion.

maybe this nanny should just wear depends? end of problem, and she won't be asking strangers anymore to watch those poor kids.

You are absolutely correct. She really should not be asking strangers to watch someone elses children. It's dangerous and VERY irresponsible. I hope the OP sees the mom again.

As a nanny, I would NEVER leave my charges with a stranger! I don't care how big of a pain in the ass it is to go to the bathroom with a double stroller, leaving the kids is 100% out of the question.

Unless it is an emergency, a paid childcare provider should never leave a child alone with someone NOT known by the parents. These people are paid to do jobs, not make executive decisions.

And by an emergency, I don't mean having to piddle. We all piddle.

LOL at the use of piddle.

Agreed though- totally and unbelievably dangerous, especially in today's world.

At least we can be thankful you have a head on your shoulders and you're reaching out!

Hehe, piddle.

OP might have a head on her shoulders but there are many who don't. Scary...

You wanna see a picture of Naomi Watts scolding her nanny on the beach?

Sorry ... didn't look like she was yelling or pissed off at her to me.

good rule of thumb- if you wouldn't leave your purse there (ie: with a stranger, in your car while you "run in to the store" or out of sight on the other side of the playground) then WHY would you leave a child?????????????

Great rule of thumb! I would guess that this Nanny has some kind of urgent medical condition (and maybe I only think this because I do too) but knowing this, the Nanny needs to start looking for another line of work. I sympathize but you have to realize that if you have this condition and your job is not the kind that can be accomodating you have to find a new job. I worked with inmates that I could NEVER leave alone, so I asked to never work alone, and eventually moved on to a new career.

Were you ever able to inform the mother? It sounds like you see her around sometimes. What did she say?

I haven't seen the mother around again. I was hoping that someone who knew her would be would see the posting. I hate to say it, but it would be a hard thing to tell her if I saw it.

That's the problem with blogs like this....a lot of information is disseminated, and everyone renders an opinion (helpful or not), but ultimately, the person who really needs to know, and who probably is with kids more than on the computer, is never made aware.

I'm often not sure why these exist, to be honest.
