McDonald's in Huntington Beach, CA

Received Thursday, July 19, 2007
Physical description of caregiver: 19-21 year old, Hispanic girl, short, with long dark hair, medium complexion with acne and acne scars on her face. The girl was wearing a white tank top with a crown on it in white/silver rhinestones, and blue jeans.
Physical description of involved child/children: A young girl, around 6-7 with a white flower print dress on, with multi-colored flowers, who's dress was half undone in the back. The infant was approx. 9-12 months old and was wearing overalls and a white T-shirt with something like a heart on it. It was hard to tell because the overalls were on.
Address or venue of observed incident: Huntington Beach, CA at McDonald's off Goldenwest.
Date and time of incident: 7/18/07 at approx. 11:30-12:30pm
Detailed description of what you witnessed: The nanny was with another nanny who had a baby with her. However, her friend did not neglect the baby she was watching (approx. 6 months) much, but was left to care for the other nannies charges most of the time I was there. When I first got there with my charge I noticed the table with 2 strollers on it and half eaten food. Only the nannies friend was there at the time, and she was talking on her cell phone. The 9-12 month old was sitting in a high chair sucking on a green Gerber sippy cup. Soon she dropped the cup and started crying. Then, the neglectful nanny came in the play area and picked the cup up off the floor and handed it right back to the baby, after the top had touched the ground. I cringed, but at this point, I was only suspicious of neglect. Because my charge is 2 1/2 he was playing up in the jungle gym area and I had plenty of time to watch these two nannies who were sitting at the table next to me.

The nannies spoke mostly in Spanish, however I did understand that they were talking about heavy drinking and smoking pot! I looked around at the other parents around us, and they too were noticing these nannies strange behavior. After the baby dropped her sippy cup again, the bad nanny walked over scooped the cup up, and hit the little girls hand and told her she couldn't use her cup if she was just going to drop it! I was shocked! She saw my look at quickly handed the baby a piece of plastic trash with ice cream on it to stop her from crying and left the play area again. After the baby had torn the plastic top and made the lid break into sharp pieces the little girl must have hurt her mouth because she started crying again and the other nanny went and took it away from her. Once again she started crying, which is when the bad nanny came back. She handed the baby hand sanitizer, yes you heard me, hand sanitizer for the baby to suck and chew on! The she proceeded to walk away again!

That's when I noticed the older girl was with these nannies as well. These nannies had not once injured or spoken to this child in the 30 minutes I had been watching them. She walked up to the table and saw her sister chewing on the hand sanitizer and said that her mom would be mad and fire the nanny if she knew she was doing that. The nanny gave her a sickeningly sweet face and said no you won't tell her, because I am going to buy you a cookie and some ice cream. The little girl said okay, and the bad nanny left to guy buy the bribe.

In the hour I was watching these nannies, I was shocked at what I had seen. I have seen some neglectful nannies and moms in the past, but this just topped them all. I really felt these children may be in danger, so I posted this in hoped their parents might see.
Description of vehicle, bag, stroller that may aid in identifying involved caregiver: The 9-12 month old was in a jogging stroller that I think was red. The caregiver did not have a diaper bag with her, which made me think she was also not changing the infant.

Ok, this was pretty horrible. I don't know if this event was something you'd call the cops over, but it does make you wish the average person could make citizen's arrests for stanky childrearing behavior. Ewww...

Just goes to show if you can't afford a reputable nanny, you truly do get what you pay for most of the time.

I hope someone connected with these children sees this, it's one of the worst ones I've read on here. I hope the girl works up the nerve to rat out the nanny to her mom.

These are the types who feel they should be getting $1000 a week, I suppose.

This is so sad. I don't even know what to say. It breaks my heart.

This is an unfortunate incident, but quite honestly, people in glass houses should not throw stones. What do you think you were doing paying so much detailted attention to these other ladies when you had a charge to be playing with and engaging? Talk about neglect, look to yourself.

Thanks for posting this OP, very sad story, poor children. I hope somebody sees this, I have a part time nanny who is mazing with my baby, we live in a small residential area and I am sometimes stoped by people on the street who recognise my baby and the stroller to tell me what a sweet and caring nanny my daugther has...

During the first days she worked with us I folled her to the park, came home early etc...basically the usual things to be certain she was in good hands. I would really urge parents to do this, as most people can apear sweet and gentle during an interview and lets be real, references can be faked.

I don't know how many of you have read the recent articles but, children are actually DYING from ingesting small amounts of hand sanitizer!! One child was rushed to the ER after becoming unresponsive , she had alcohol poisoning from licking the hand sanitizer on her hand. So this is a very serious sighting. The nanny is an idiot who should be fired.

3:26 Ok I was being dramatic, no children have died but they have gotten seriously ill. Wanted to make that correction before I got lynched.

247, (AKA Nanny)
I can gossip with the gals, read a magazine, eat a salad, talk on the cellphone and STILL make sure my child is not in harm's way. It is about priorities. The OP of this probably had a reasonable amount of common sense. All that is needed to multi task. Children are not science experiments. Caring for them isn't complicated, but it isn't for everyone.

"Look to yourself"
Ahhhh please.

I totally agree with 3:47. Who takes their kids or charge to McDonalds and stares at them every second? Don't be so uptight! It's a totally fenced in, small area and when the kids are climbing through the tubes you can't see them anyways. I hate people that come on here and say this! Same thing everytime!

This is the OP:

Thanks for sticking up for me guy's! Your are right. When I am at the park, I am with my charge the whole time going up the stairs, and down the slides, and on the swings, in the fire truck, whatever he wants to do. But, at McDonalds they don't let parents or nannies up on the play equipment. So, I knew he was up there running around with 4 other little boys and was having a blast. I could hear them, but the way everything is you can't see even if you wanted to. I had plenty of time to watch these nannies!

You make me sick. Plain and simple. I just can't add anything else.

I am a sahm and I take my kids to the local mcdonalds playland often. Adults are not allowed to play on the equipment. I sit and chat with the other moms all the while I can hear my kids and always keep an eye on them when no on the equipment. If you can't multitask you may want to take on a new profession.

247 is probably a lazy nanny slug

Re: ingesting hand sanitizer. The original news item about the girl who licked it off her hands at daycare and ended up in the emergency room was misleading. In order to get alcohol poisoning she would have had to drink about 1/3 of the bottle. The daycare was not honest about what really happened. Giving the bottle to the child is dangerous, using it on the hands is not.

thats what happends when you hire illegal mexicans to take care of your kids! it happends all the time in california, cheap labor, cheap care, wake up people!!

Anonymous said...

946... what makes you jump to the conclusion that they are illigal and mexican?

Anonymous said...

I'm no fan of illegals, but let's get it straight. I know many 4th generation Americans of Mexican descent. Granted, they probably aren't working as nannies and are more than likely your congressmen, sentators, judges, police, teachers and psychologists.

I don't appreciate that a random person can come on here and anonymously attempt to surreptitiously bash one race.

Any parent who hires an illegal (from any country) is making a mistake. How can you do a background check on an illegal? You can't.

she said NANNY NANNY NANNY NANNY Laycee.

nanny Laycee's name IS Nancy, idiot and she didn't post that

Was the ice cream treat a McFlurry, by chance? The M&M fragments in that can cause choking. I should know, I choked on one myself and I'm thirty two

Anonymous said...

You most certainly CAN do background checks on illegals. What do you think the U.S. government does when they apply for legal status? Asshats.

Anonymous said...

but if you were to do a background check on an illegal, won't that be a givaway to the government that you are maybe going to employ an illegal and couldn't that possibly be why they aren't done, asshat?

Anonymous said...

NO, you can NOT do a background check on an illegal. Whatever the US government has access to, we don;t have access too! Background checks are done on US residents. They search US courts, US credit institutions and US DMV.

The only asshat is the original asshat. I would never employ an illegal because a dear friend of mine employed a nanny from the Caribbean for two years. She seemed wonderful. She said she was a nurse in Jamaica. Only after pressing charges against the nanny here did they come to realize that she had never gone past 6th grade in school, was never a nurse, had 4 children in Jamaica (by the way who she was supporting by stealing from my friend) and had been arrested for beating up her boyfriend MULTIPLE times. And the only way my friend found that out was because one of the nannies friends from the same town works for my sister!

I love that the argument turned into what my name was. Thats not the point. The point was that regardless of race, age, or gender sometimes people make poor judgments and if someone else's child is at stake something should be done. I am completely baffeled on why race keeps coming into it. Sheesh.

Ps. My name is Laycee and I am a nanny. No Nancy involved. Sorry.

nanny laycee,
the park slope nannies have a bullying mob that controls most of the brooklyn parks. They aren't much for online activities. But their bullying nanny posse's online equivalency is a branch of knee jerk nannies out of so cal.

Anonymous said...

Ah so this website has lost its original purpose of alerting parents to poor child care to a place where less then mature people can call each other "ass hats" over the fact of if someone was legal or not. Pity.

Anonymous said...

Well, guess what? I have employeed 2 illegal nannies and I have done 2 thorough background checks on them. How do you suppose that is? My husband did a background check on himself first to check for accuracy. He is originally from the same country that they are from, but he was able to do the background check from here in the States.

11:30am

I believe the equivalent of the bullying nannies in Park Slope online would have to be all of the jealous stay at home mom's, nannies, or whatever that feel the need to come on here and bash each other anonymously!

When did this forum go from a place to report sketchy child care sighting, to a place for child care workers to be rude and bash each other? The scariest thing to think off, is all of these people most likely are child care workers or mother's themselves. No wonder there are soo many obnoxious kids out there when these people are their examples!

Anonymous said...

I just asked my husband and he said the background check place is called Owens. They turned up his financial history, employment history & knew that he was in the slammer for a minor infraction in his youth. :0) His country is very far away form here.

Tee hee.

I love to play devil's advocate.

1. picking a sippy cup off the floor and giving it back to a kid... not a big deal.

2. talking about drinking and pot! Guess what chica? there's a VERY good chance that they were talking about the parents. Unless you know what they were saying in it's entirety that fact that you understand two words (interesting that those are the spanish words you've chosen to learn) doesn't mean you understand the conversation.

3. hitting the girls and then bribing them to not tell????

Well, I'll have to commend you for not bitch slapping that nanny.. I'm not sure I wouldn't have been able to show restraint.

Anonymous said...

Jessica - I have no idea which devil you're advocating? Your post is all over the place.

Anonymous said...

I would have called McDonalds and said I was the parent and I wanted the security camera tapes for a child abuse case. Then I would have called the local newstations and tell them that a parent was looking for the surveillance tapes regarding an incident of abuse at McDonalds. I would connect them all together and hope they spit out one decrepit nanny.

Interesting idea, 10:15. Not sure how feasible it is, but interesting.

It is a shame that children are left in the hands of uncaring individuals who portray themselves to be just the opposite and get away with the dishonesty, allowing children to suffer because of their selfishness, greed and laziness. It is the same for the elderly. They are left at the hands of others to care for them who do not always have their interests at heart. There are also wonderful caretakers out there so the main thing is to pray that your's is close to the Lord and sincere. If anything is wrong, ask that God reveal it to you and it will be made known.

Anonymous said...

umm... you let your charge play in the play area where you can "hear but not see" him/her? i don't know if that is the wisest choice considering it only takes seconds for a child to get hurt... your being in hearing range would do nothing but allow you to run to his/her aid too late. I don't agree with nannies talking about drinking or drugs, but i also don't agree with caregivers not watching their own charges and acting judgmental about others.
