Geographical Differences and Salary

Tuesday, March 20, 2007
Just found this blog...what a great resource! My previous job just ended and I am looking for another position. Anyway my previous salary $15/hr plus $25 a week for gas (I am located in Dallas). Is this more, less or about in line with what you other nannies make ( I had two older two kids..and also ran lots of errands), also it was a part time job. I know that there are geographical differences (Id expect someone in New York to make more). Also, I'm considering a job now, that seems great except the commute is quite long...have any of you had to drive a long way to your family...I just wanted to know if that ended up being a siginificant hassel...from a time and gas aspect. This was my first job as a nanny, any comments or insight from someone more experienced than I would be greatly appreciated.

I nanny one infant in NYC, and my salary is based on $15 an hour. Rates here vary widely, depending on the experience, education and qualifications of the nanny. Other variables are, number of children, specific duties, and hours. Part time rates are usually higher than full time, and some nannies get a higher rate for overtime, after their regular hours.
I suggest you look for a nanny organization in your area for advice and mutual support.
There are also a number of helpful sites on the web that you can find through Google. GL

If the commute is long, please make sure your hours are not.

Frankly, I don't know why you're asking this question because it's a matter of common sense. No one else would know what you can/cannot tolerate.

Thank you to the first poster.
And to you other person...Im wasn't asking people for their opinion on what I CAN tolerate....Im just asking for their own ancedotes/wisdom (many ppl have been doing this much longer than I have)...perhaps that wasn't clear to you...but sheesh...i've noticed the comments get rude so quickly here

This isn't the place for this post. 11:40 is right ...

I used to commute an hour and fifteen minutes for my employers (I've since moved). It wouldn't have been so bad if I had a regular schedule with normal hours. It did seem to make me need more caffeine over the course of a day, so take that for what it's worth. Your salary sounds within the range of normal to me.

I am a live-out nanny in Baltimore, MD and generally make $15/hour. The family gives me extra money here and there for running errands and such to cover my gas. They are also great about leaving extra money when I go grocery shopping so I can pick up food/drinks for myself. Any extra hours I work for this family or for other families is $12/hour cash (no taxes).

As far as the commute goes, I only live 20 minutes from where I work, but the traffic makes my commute about an hour in the morning and 45 minutes in the evening going home. I don't mind the commute because it is just a fact of life around here. Where I live people can't afford nannies so I have to drive a little further to where they can. Most people in the Baltimore area have a similar commute no matter what line of work they are in, that's just how the traffic is around here.

I hope this helps! Good luck with getting a new position!

I make $14/hour fulltime for one child in Denver. Your salary sounds about right..but the commute could get old. I travel 32 miles daily to and from work..it's not that bad though, and you have to travel to where the money is!! Good Luck!

I make $15/hour in Seattle, the hours are crazy, but the family more thatn makes up for it by paying me for a full 40 hour week every weeek even though some weeks I may work as little as 16 hours. Rate is important, but so is the parents' attitude. Make sure both are acceptible.

I live in Austin and make $14 an hour for one child and I get paid mileage. Sounds like you're actually a little over paid for not having much experience so you have done well for yourself:) If your drive is over 30 mins that can get old fast.

I have to say this is one of the most interesting things I've seen on this blog.

I'm in Toronto, and the going rates seem to be much less than in the States. Interesting.

Here it seems to be $500/40 hour week, of course everything is based on experience, actual duties and number of children.
