Received Wednesday January 17, 2007
Date: 1/16 approx 9 AM and two other times within the last week
Location: This day I was on 85th Street and Park Avenue. I recognized her as I have seen her twice in the past in the same general area.
The Child: Inside a seafoam colored stroller. 2 different shades of this unique color of green. Not a stroller color I have seen before.
The Nanny: A baby nurse. Wearing white nursing shoes, white nursing pants, a white nurse-scrubs type top and a blue, heavy button up cardigan. African American with very short, short hair and a large build and approx 50-60 yrs. old.
What happened: I have seen this person before walking in this area with the child. I recall the first time I saw her she was having a smoke away from the child. I thought that odd. This day I saw her strolling and smoking with the child. The child was crying. She extinguished her cigarette and picked up child to comfort him/her.
The parents cannot possibly know the baby nurse smokes around the child, right?

Well, at least she picked the kid up. That's more than a lot of nannies would do.
op..you are kidding us with this right? People smoke! It is gross and second hand smoke is dangerous but it is not ilegal or abuse to smoke around a child. Dumb..yes! And it souunds like both times you witnessed this woman the baby was not in her arms but in a stroller..most likely out of harms way..especially is there was even the slightest of breezes to carry the smoke away. You said yourself at one point she was smoking away from the baby!!you thought this odd? Why..she was doing the right thing..smoking away from the baby! My daughters grandparents smoke and they do the same thing..step a few feet away and always make sure the baby is upwind. And if you think the parents don't know this woman smokes..I would guess again..not all of us are PC nutjobs!!We recognize that people have a legal right to smoke weather we like it or not! This woman did the right thing wth are you posting this for?!
This post cannot be real. This has got to be a post sent in strictly to provoke responses.
I am a grandma and I smoked a pack a day when I was pregnant with all 3 of my children..I did not know anybetter! Now,when I smoke I always make sure that my grandchildren are a few feet away and in the oposite direction that the wind is blowing. My daughter and SIL know I smoke and have no problem with it!
If the women was taking a toke and blowing the smoke right into the babies face..you might have a great post!
"she extinguished her cigarette and picked up the child to comfort him/her" This nanny/BN sounds fabulous compared to all the posts about these young twits on cell phones and in parks picking up men all the while ignoring the child that is wandering away!
I am shocked by some of these responses. WHat person in their right mind would hire a baby nurse that smokes? I am an occasional smoker. My pediatrician knows this! He told me if I have a ciggarette I need to wash my hands and change my shirt before I handle the baby!
I woould hire a smoker that picked my baby up when he needed comfort as oppossed to a non smoker who spends all day chatting with friends and ignoring my child!
legal right to smoke?
most people wouldn't hire a smoking nanny. They damn sure wouldn't knowingly hire a smoking baby nurse. If you pay 3k a week for a baby nurse, you don't want her to be Joe frickin camel!
1116 oh come on!! That is a nice gesture but no harm is done if you don't wash your hands! That is simply so the smell does not transfer to the baby!!Such extremes!!!
1117 where do you live that it is ilegal to smoke???
there are plenty of great nannies and baby nurses out there that don't smoke. I think tobacco lobbyist got a hold of this post. None of you pro smoking people makes sense. I don't care if you smoke or not. A babynurse is someone who is responsible for an infant 24 hours a day.
11:17 yeah.like you can afford 3k a week for domestic help!
1120 your post was graet but your point? or did you even have one?
let your gardener smoke. hell buy him a pack. but a baby nurse that smokes is a joke!
ther is nothing wrong with people that smoke and th op said the woman was smoking away from the baby..what is the problem..that you don't smoke so it is wrong for everyone else??
What does affording a baby nurse have to do with anything? A baby nurse is supposed to be with your infant 24 hours a day. To me, there is no room for hiring a smoker. That would most definitely be a BAD hire and what would be the point? I have seen many baby nurses in my life and never once I have seen one smoking! That is grotesque!
women who smoke are pioneers of our country!!
11:25, did you type that with tobacco stained finger tips? Smile in delight revealing your yellow and rotting teeth while the sound of your children's hacking cough echoes in the background????
maybe if all of you perfect non smoking mommies took care of your own babies instead of paying another woman to do your job this would not be an issue!
why does one hire a baby nurse?
anyone else get the feeling that a lot of the people posting don't have a clue what a baby nurse is?
Should I break it down for you? She is NOT a real nurse. She is a nanny dedicated to the constant 24 hour care of a newborn. She is not an RN or LPN.
I admit I do not understand why one would hire a baby nurse? PLease explain.
Ten years late in coming...
Maine is one of the first states and CT will be the next to make it illegal to smoke while driving with a child in the car.
a random fact from someone who is mortified at the thought of anyone who would willingly hire a nanny or baby nurse that smokes!
okay but she was not in a car or indoors..she was outside in an open space!
your ignorance, class and status is showing. Bwhahahahahahahahah.
anyone who thinks a smoking baby nurse is okay is no doubt suffering from a head injury from the last time a tornado whipped through the trailer park.
YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO PICK UP A BABY AFTER SMOKING WITHOUT CHANGING YOUR CLOTHING AND WASHING YOURS HANDS AND FACE! KNOWING THIS, WHY WOULD YOU HIRE A BABY NURSE THAT SMOKES?
ANSWER? YOU WOULD NOT.
EVEN A SMOKING MOTHER WOULDN'T HIRE A SMOKING BABY NURSE.
1132..oh it's you again. The same old same old will now begin..all the trailer park humor,Bwhaha and anti woman jokes!! Boy,just can't get enough of that!!I'm gone!
where is L?
what happened to L?
She used to comment all the time on here. Come back L. I never agreed with you but you argued with grace!
1133...Please expalin your post..Why?
11:33 are you a doctor? Please share with us what you know?
ask your pediatrician why.
I'm guessing somewhere along the same lines as why you don't hire an alcoholic with a 40 of St Ides in his pocket to drive a school bus.
I liked your point but hate all caps posting. Stop!
I am asking you..it is after all your post! Back it up. All I get so far is that you don't like smokers!
1136..OKAY I WILL STOP..SORRY IT BOTHERS YOU SO MUCH...WON'T DO IT ANYMORE..I PROMISE..REALLY..NO MORE CAPS
WELL OBVIOUSLY SOME ONE HIRED A SMOKING NANNY. Baby nurse is a stupid term for mommies replacement!
again,I would love to know why a baby nurse is hired? Anyone?
Shocking that you need some anonymous person to clarify what is well known about smoking! Don't you have a pediatrician?????
Strategies could include:
• reducing the number of cigarettes she smokes and perhaps changing to low nicotine brands
•
• don’t allow smoking in enclosed areas where the baby may be eg. inside the house or inside the car
• don’t take baby into smoky environments and don’t allow people to smoke around the baby• cover hair with a scarf and clothing with a big old shirt while smoking – remove and leave outside after smoking. Wash hands and face after smoking.
• observe baby for nicotine-related symptoms and further reduce exposure if possible.
i think i prefer the mean uppity mom bashing trailer park people to the ignorant people who cannot grasp the concept of a baby nurse and who are envious of anyone who can and would hire one.
i know that isn't saying much!
1142..so why the post? None of your info applied to our baby nurse? And washing your hands in nice..but there is absolutley no danger to baby if you dont!
okay, once again for the uber dense.
If you are a smoker and have an infant or toddler, cover your hair with a scarf and clothing with a big old shirt while smoking – remove and leave outside after smoking. Wash hands and face after smoking.
Do you think the american academy pf pediatrics is offering these suggestions as fashion tips or because of the fact that nicotine and other chemicals on your clothing, face, hair and hands transfers to the child?
think for a minute before you respond. go google something.
jas..I am sure you know everything. Some us have no clue as to why a mommy just giving birth would turn her child over to another woman.I am sorry that ,according to you, so many women are familiar with doing so..to me it is a sad thing! But maybe your children are better off being raised by some one else if you are not emotionally attatched.
1147 you are right if it is in writing it MUST be true..just like how bad wine and coffe were for us 15 years ago..oh but wait now they are good for us!! You people are like sheep in a heard follow whoever is in front..don't think for yourselves!!
parents of multiples often hire baby nurses. there is nothing wrong with people who hire baby nurses. there is something wrong with people who hire smoking baby nurses.
there is something wrong with parents that are detatched from their children.
next question?
I think we have two diverse groups posting here..the yuppie PC crowd and the older, smoking crowd...maybe both have valid points!
yeah are always such a know it all bitch?
YES. It must be a trick!
Smoking is actually GOOD for us.
Smoking probably even prevents cancer. Thank you for pointing out that what I thought was common sense and judgments made after reading fact based research is nothing more than me following a herd of sheep.
Okay, I don't even get that metaphor. Don't sheep not even follow a heard of sheep? Isn't that the whole premise behind Brokeback Mountain.
Put out your ciggarette and take a walk, angry smoker chic!
Wait this is good and I have to change a poopy diaper!! Hold those thoughts!!
Only when I know it all.
Yeah. I guess, always.
I don't smoke..can't stand it..can't stand idiots who try to take others rights away!! There are plenty of commy countries you could move to and then you will feel right at home!
1152 you are just ridiculous!
jas,,don't beleive in baby nurses but your children will benefit..I can tell!
I don't get this,
" yuppie PC crowd and the older, smoking crowd...maybe both have valid points! "
I am not a yuppie, nor am I PC. I just think the site of a baby nurse in whites and smoking is insane!
I love my twins and could never turn them over to anyone else!! Not all parents of multiples have others care for their babies! Some of us are very strong and do it ourselves!
I have a friend who "doesn't believe in baby nurses" either. I had a baby nurse for 5 weeks after my first was born. That same friend doesn't believe in driving SUVS. These are ways she justifies her middle class life and Toyota Corolla. And yes, she stinks of envy.
So come back at me when a baby nurse is within your reach and then tell me whether or not you "believe" in baby nurses.
I agree that many parents of multiples do it themselves. I never had a baby nurse. I chose not to even though many in my circle did. I do agree that none of them would have hired a baby nurse that smokes!
who is taking rights away? she is responsible for a newborn 24 hours a day. she shouldn't be a smoker. end of discussion. and she probably lied to get the job.
1157 you always post the same reduntant crap..why is it so hard for you to beleive that some women actually like being a mommy and all it entails..that does not make us poor or envious..it makes us great mommies. My husband makes enough money for us to own a beautiful home, drive a gorgeous suv and take two family vacations a year. We are neither rich or poor we are very comfortable. I could afford to pay some one to clean my house but don't..I could afford a fulltime nanny but don't have one. This is a choice. I do not care what others think as you obviously do because your posts always center around what people can and cannot afford! You choose to pay a woman to do your job..you have that right..I do not have to like it..I choose to be a fulltime mommy to my baby..you don not have to like it but stop with all the boring money crap you are truly clogging this blog site and it is annoying! You are the trailer park.bwhaha..anti woman basher..we all have figured out who you are!
okay you know it all ..she lied!!
Way to go 1206...you are right she does post the same thing over and over. Always accusing those of us that she dis-agrees with of being poor or envious! Her blogs are easy to spot!
12:06 why so much hate towards the trailerpark poster?
as opposed to 12:17 who just posts in agreement to herself all the time!
1206 here..because she is a phony and I cannot stand fake people. She only posts to get attention regardless of the issue. She tears everyone apart and claims some high and mighty social status degrading all who are not as well off as she! Money is not everything. Her posts just set me off!
see..that is the other thing she is always making accusations about peoples postings!! She is a control freak and my husband swears I'd go to jail if I ever came face to face with her!
resentment towards trailer parks?
During a twister in 83, an evaporative cooler from a trailer park 1/5 mile away was loosened from the rickety siding and went flying through the air landing out front of the ice cream shoppe I was at and on my right foot-severing four of my toes. I can never go to a beach. I can't wear sandals. Peep toed pumps are but a pipe dream for me.
1223 same old poster hiding behind anon..again. Come on out trailerpark poster..we know it is you!
12:06,
Do you run everything by your husband?
Just the good stuff!!!Unlike you I like men ms trailer park poster!
okay, back to the issue at hand. I think this was a great sighting to send in because a baby nurse should not be smoking. But how about you all look around and send in a good sighting? It has been awhile since we had one of those, right?
1226 your post is an opinon and not a fact!
If I was a baby nurse that smoked, I would sneak out and puff in a dark alley! Not on a busy Manhattan Street!
okay you are all right..a nanny who stops what she is doing to comfort a baby..who smokes..away from the baby and who takes baby out for walks..what a horrible person!
can you all use your initials. One intial? A fake name? Too many anonymous postings. One extra click and you can give yourself a moniker.
PS I am a smoker. Not proud of the fact but do smoke. I made sure the children's nanny was a non smoker. Even if she said she wouldn't smoke around the children, I wouldn't want someone jonesing for nictotine taking care of my children.
I am telling you non smoking, tight jean wearing, cell phone using ,self absorbed, men hunting nannies are the way to go!
1229 you are a saint!
I have many friends that don't have nannies even though they could afford them. But no one in their right mind could afford a housekeeper and would choose not to! That is ridiculous.
Signed without apologies,
mother with FT housekeeper and FT nanny
r..while it may not be true for you some of us girls were raised by mothers that did it all,I was one of those and I clean my own house, watch my own children, pack my husbands, childrens and my own lunch and even make coffee in the morning! I work fulltime and am greatful that I have what I have..no complaints. The $ I make is extra as my husband does quite well..I choose to spend it having fun with the kids or buying new things for the house! No houskeepers here although it is affordable! And no one expects you to apologieze for your choices..fT nanny..FT houskeeper!but please don't adopt those of us that are well off..it is not fair!
1231 you are just lazy! What do you do all day..why did you have kids?
r,what do you do for a living? Spend your husbands money?
If I could afford full time nanny, I would not want! My two are in daycare. If I could afford to stay at home, I might give up dreams of having a career. If I could afford a full time housekeeper, ummmm. I would in a heartbeat take that. Anyone who says they like cleaning their own house, scrubbing their own toilets and washing dirty boxers- well that is a lie you tell yourself to make yourself feel better about where you are. I have a housekeeper twice a week. 8 hours total per week. It is never enough!
1241 how does it feel to know what everyone else feels and thinks?Must be amazing!
Why is it so hard for some women to believe that a few of us out here are full of pride that we clean our own homes and take care of our own children? What is wrong with that?
the thought of a baby nurse in whites pushing a stroller down the street puffing away is almost funny. sad, but funny. I know there are many mothers out there who smoke, but you don't see them pushing newborns and smoking. It's a dirty, dirty habbit. That baby nurse has balls because most of the smokers I know are ashamed of their filthy craving.
1241 are you so insecure that you have to badmouth women who don't pay others to do their jobs? So what..some women like to take good care or their homes, children and husbands!! You can't do it all just admit it!!!
If you have never had a baby nurse, you must really try it! Ability to resume working out & dining out right away. Ability to sleep through the night the first night home. Instead of changing diapers all day long, perhaps you change two or three. If you choose to feed the baby, the baby nurse will bring you the bottle and the child. And then remove and wash both when you are finished.
I cannot beleive all of the people that are so worried with waht the world thinks! It is a sad day for me! Hiding habits, ashamed of the cars they drive..wanting to make sure veryone knows they can afford a fulltime nanny and housekeeper? Wher do you people live...Knot's Landing?
joy..please get your tubes tied..NOW!
ewww. you sound repressed. why is cleaning and keeping a home a woman's job?
joy you are full of shit!! You do not nor have ever had a baby nurse!
No. I have not gone the baby nurse route. I prefer to keep the bonding with a newborn experience between myself and my husband! Well worth any perceived "sacrifices".
People are different just because I don't want to have a high powered career and dine out everynight, wear fake nails and color my hair does not make me repressed dear!I like the things I do. While your housekeeper & nanny are taking care of your children and no doubt your husband too..I will be taking care of mine!!
people with class don't have fake nails.
joy,you are fabulous and I agree. Don't let the trailerpark poster thgrow you! She is envious that we actually like and are capable of taking care of our own! Enjoy your little ones!
no just fake lives!
just to remind you all, those who were once called "baby nurses" are no longer allowed to call themseleves "baby nurses". We are talking about women who have taken a first aid class and not much more. The least you can expect to require from such a person is that they not smoke!
Poeple with class don't pay to have things done that they should be doing themselves!People with new money do!!
Just curious..those of you that employ a FT nann & FT housekeeper..what do you do all day?Do you work? Shop? Sleep? Have affairs? Get bored?
except that nannies, governesses and real baby nurses were component of old money back in the day. New money and merely middle class globbed on to the concept without requiring the skill and tact. That is why you see a bunch of immigrant nannies running around. Do your homework. Old money requires much more of the help, keep the help for a lifetime and treats the help well.
My husband beems when we have dinner parties..he proudly shows off his family and always brags about his wife..that would be me!! I love it!I love the comments I get about my clean yet homey house and the raves about my food. Our children are always present and well behaved. This is a good life. I am sure your husbands are pround of the nanny and housekeeper??Maybe??
I am glad you all calmed down!
how pathetic..I would not be embarassed about the smoking but would hide the nanny & maid!!Jeesh!!!I would never admit that I pay someone to do those things!
11:27 - AMEN SISTER!!!! Amen.
i can't belive this nanny has the nerve to smoke near the child! isn't she worried that someone who knows her boss's may see her and tell them? this is shocking to me!
baby nurses on the whole do not smoke! this person is the lone exception. kind of like the dentist with one grey tooth. warning sign. do not hire!
502..maybe this woman has nothing to hide..maybe her smart employers would rather hire a smoking, mature, loving nanny who takes the baby on long walks as oppossed to a bunch of whiny sniveling non-smoking,complainers who sit at there computers all day bitching about nannies doing bad jobs!
anyone who is going to pay money for a job to be done should have the sense to hire a professional who does the job right. Regardless of your hatred for mothers who have nannies, this certainly makes sense.
There are great nannies and baby nurses everywhere. If you are a smoking baby nurse, I would suggest employment at Burger King. The flame griller Whoppers will mix nicely with the noxious fumes of nicotine.
whoa 6:20! RELAX! i am far from a "whining, sniveling, nonsmoking complainer"! fyi, i am a nanny who smokes! i also take my charges on long walks, but i don't think my employers would be very happy to hear if i smoked in front of the kids! and by the way, i don't sit around bitching about bad nannies all day, thats everyone else who posted! i got home at 5 and checked this blog and there were already 100 posts bitching about this! so don't even try to come at me like i don't have anything better to do all day than post about bad nannies on these blogs, instead i am taking long walks with my charges, and NOT smoking in front of them!
This is the most unbelievable judgment-fest. Can we stick to the question at hand and not get into a ridiculous debate about our own lives?
And did anyone consider that perhaps the mother was injured during the birth, or became ill? It happens.
And learn some rules of argument, people! If someone says that they don't think a baby nurse should be smoking on the job, that does not necessarily mean they mean anything else. The number of comments that are totally off the wall is astounding. Saying a baby nurse shouldn't smoke is not the same as saying that all smokers are genocidal maniacs. It only means that a baby nurse shouldn't smoke.
As far as how people live their own lives: judge not lest ye be judged. Like on this comment thread!
750..go back to your bible blogs!!
Does the dippy baby nurse know that smoking around newborns is a SIDS risk?
How much is this b*itch getting paid to put this child at risk?
You should follow her and see where she works. Report her.
Does anyone remember when smoking was allowed in hospitals? Old TV shows and movies showing doctors smoking in their offices? It looks crazy now. Men used to wear thick, quilted smoking jackets to catch the smoke from their pipes and leave the jacket in the study so as not to offend the Missus of the house. The more we learn aboout the awful second hand effects of smoking, the more the AMA regulations change. If you smoke you cover yourself in smoke, so washing and changing before touching your baby is not ridiculous. And judging from the age of the posted nanny, she's from old school-smoking-in-the-hospital days. It looks weird to us to see anyone smoking in a medical uniform because we know better now. I wouldn't hire any one who smokes or continually smells of smoke. And anyone who tries to defend smoking is in denial. If you want to smoke do it, but don't pretend it's not dangerous. Don't be a hypocrite, and definietly keep away from kids.
1119 I didn't read all the posts, so I don't know if someone clarified for you. My best friend works at the American Cancer Society. It has been proven that the chemicals(CO2, arsnic, etc.) can cling to a persons shirt after smoking. That can transfer to the child. It is second hand smoke. A baby nurse should not smoke around a baby unless on break with a jacket on that can be removed. (or if she plans to change tops) As someone who lost a few loved ones to lung cancer, and as a mommy, I am a strong advocate of not smoking anywhere near children, upwind or down. Just my opinion.
1125 am, sure, women who smoke will have the "LIFE EXPECTANCY" of the women who were the pioneers of our country. SHORT.
I find it hard to beleive that all of you nanny bashing PC'ers were raised by non smoking parents!! It was the in thing from the 1920's thru the late 70's to smoke even while pregnant..have any of you stories to share about proiblems you had because your parents smoked? This has been blown out of proportion..once again!
1136..my mother smoked 2 packs a day from the time she was 18 until she was 50..now she smokes 1 pack a day and is 72!
those women had short lives becuase they worked hard ! They did not pay a baby nurse ,nanny or housekeeper to do their jobs!
Do you know how many people that don't smoke have died from lung cancer!!
dude, there is something wrong with you! Are you a meth head or something? You do realize it is not normal to be a proponent of smoking around children. You need therapy. Your therapist will help you deal with the repressed anger you have at your parents for endangering your life! Get help now.
yes I am aware of the # of people who die of lung cancer who did smoke. That # will go down as more and more restaurants and inter environments refuse to allow selfish and weak smokers to pollute our air!
I think the anti-smoking legislation in bars and restaurants is great. I always hated restaurants that stank of smoke in the "non-smoking" area, and bars were even worse. So I didn't frequent either. Now I go out a lot more. And it really is a public health issue for those people who worked in those places and didn't have a say about working 40 hours a week or more in constant smoke. Their only choice was to quit. Which is no choice because where else could they tend bar or wait tables for a living? Workers in asbestos factories were better protected. Keep it up legislators!
Wow, that took forever to read the comments!! Anyway, ..
1140, my best friend's husband was raised by smokers. He has the early stages of lung disease. Even after they found out, they continued to smoke. Until he went off to college it was severe. Whenever he and his wife would visit, he would end up in the emergency room with a severe asthma atack his inhalor couldn't cure. His own sister had the same problem. Now that she is out of state in college, her lungs have started healing. But they will always have problems.
1141, while I think 1136 is a bit off, not everyone is so lucky. My step-grandmother smokes a pack a day and has a drink first thing in the morning and right before bed. She's about 94 or so, and as healthy as a horse. But studies are finding that SECOND HAND SMOKE is very harmful to children, especially infants. I would never let my son be exposed to smoke. Several times we have left restaurents that don't ventilate well or stick us right next to the smoking section. It is a personal choice, but who is giving the children a choice? When they are our age, how many do you think will have lung cancer because of second hand smoke? My friend, A, is the navigator for the ACS. She and I are both moms, so she shares info with me. Yes, anything today can cause cancer. The one she had has been linked to a lawn fertilizer that her parents used. Heck, even the air we breath can give us cancer. But smoking is a choice that affects others. The nurse should not be smoking around the baby. And I am guessing you have no health issues because of your mom's smoking. Condider yourself one of the lucky ones.
you keep it up folks and pretty soon the legilature will be taking away something YOU like and then you'll be pissing & moaning about that on some blog! This is America..land of the free..if you don't like it..fine but don't rally laws that ban it! You keep letting big brother take away rights..for now they seem small but you best be careful. BTW the surgeon generals report from 1989 and 1999 states, and I quote" a non smoker would have to work side by side with a smoker..8hrs a day 5 days a week ..50 wks a year for well over 100 yrs to be exposed to a quantity of Arsenic equal to one grain of salt"end quote. The recent report does not argue this! You can also go to americanheart.org/presenter for more info.(Amrican Heart association found flaws in the validity of reports concerning second hand smoke!
another quote from the Britsh Medical Journal
"Second hand smoke is only dangerous if you hold your nose a quarter of an inch above the end of a burning cigarette and inhale a slow deep breath" "In real life no one does that"
You people are getting snowed!
And beleive it or not I am NOT a smoker..just pissed off that so many people beleive everything they hear and that those people vote! You have no idea what you are giving up..no idea!
Please show a site where it has been proven that second hand smoke will cause lung cancer..a fact based site please not opinons!!
You pride yourself on being a free thinker but you are just and only ignorant!
You need me to provide statistics for you on second hand smoke? Simply google the phrase "second hand smoke causes cancer" and read 1,122,000 articles. Not just lung cancer either. Even Breast cancer!
You also say you are not a smoker. Are you a tobacco chewer? Is there a spitoon positioned next to your EZ chair?
Stop spreading misinformation.
ra ..1989 & 1999 reports!the surgeon generals report is about as good as it gets! Read it for yourself! You can also google info on vampires living in every state ..do they exist just because google finds them?
436 so you don't like it..tough! The British Jounal and SG report are not articles that have been made up and the are very credible readings! Did you look them up or are you that closed minded that what you have been brain washed into beleieving is true?
http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/news/speeches/06272006a.html
Read this, the new surgeon general's report from June, 2006. Here is a small excerpt from the intro:
Main Messages
"I would like to draw your attention to several new conclusions that I have reached due to overwhelming scientific evidence.
* Secondhand smoke exposure causes heart disease and lung cancer in adults and sudden infant death syndrome and respiratory problems in children.
* There is NO risk-free level of secondhand smoke exposure, with even brief exposure adversely affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory system.
* Only smoke-free environments effectively protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke exposure in indoor spaces.
* Finally, the Report concludes that, while great strides have been made in recent years in reducing nonsmoking Americans’ secondhand smoke exposure, millions of Americans continue to be exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes and workplaces."
Read the rest for details.
The surgeon general IS the best.
And BTW all I did was google what the Doubter poster above said to google and this was the first listed site. I wonder why the anti-smokers couldn't find this? It took me about .0065 seconds.
And here is the link for the entire Surgeon General's report along with many other easy to read pamphlets about second hand smoke.
http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/secondhandsmoke/
Wow. Twelve whole hours and not a peep from the "show me actual proof, not just opinions" people.
jmt, thank you.
1236, your second quote, "second hand smoke is only dangerous.." does not make sense to me. How do you explain why my friend's husband, C, has lung disease? And that his sister may too? They didn't smoke, and I'm pretty sure they didn't sit an inch away from his parents when they smoked. You may feel that the goverment is trying to dupe people, but don't believe everything you read.
And BTW, arsnic is only ONE of the many chemicals in cigarette smoke that people are exposed to. While I myself don't know everyting in them, I do know they can, and do, cause cancer, promote accelerated aging and wrinkles, and may cause SIDS. While it is a persons choice to smoke, I want my rights to clean air and healthy lungs. For my child, too. I am one of many who place calls to their congressman asking to uphold no smoking bans. Scientists are always finding scary things on the market, and the goverment helps to remove them. Like red dye, as an example. If I ever see the day that tobacco is outlawed, I will be so happy. With no feelings of being repressed, thank you.
smoking is gross, plain and simple.
I would never let my daughter be around it and I would never hire a nanny who I knew smoked.
it should be illegal because it's disgusting.
I used to be a smoker and I quit many years ago and I have never felt better.
All you smokers are just nasty so shut up and admit that your cigs are more important to you than your kid's health.
My last nanny smoked when she was taking care of my baby. I knew she was a smoker when I hired her (I asked, and she honestly told me), and I asked her promise to only smoke outdoors, as I have pretty severe allergies. I am a nonsmoker who doesn`t even like the smell of smoke at all, and I never once smelled smoke inside my home, and I have a very sensitive nose.
As for the need to wash your hands and change your shirt after smoking every cigarette, this seems extreme to me. Nicotine is a carcinogen, but it`s not arsenic, people! I would prefer that someone who reeked of smoke all the time not handle my baby, and handwashing is a good practice anyway, but to change one`s shirt after every cig seems extreme to me, unless the baby is highly sensitive.
a nanny who smokes is like an irregular pair of levis. Half the price and not worth it! Defective & Gross!
L,
How old are your children? This washing the hands after every smoke and changing your shirt is commonly dispensed advice these days! And a baby nurse is not a nanny. She is in charge of a newborn 24 hours a day! That newborn deserves clean air. Damn!
My last nanny cared for my now-preschool son from the time he was 14 weeks old, for up to 14 hours a day while I worked. Washing hands, yes; changing shirt, no; smoking outside, yes.
Granted, my nanny was not a heavy smoker, or I would surely have smelled smoke on her sometimes, and I never did. Nor did my older kids ever see her smoke, or see her with cigarettes. If she hadn`t said yes when I asked her, I would have assumed she was a non-smoker.
I`m not saying smoking is healthy -- obviously, it isn`t, nor is it good around kids. I`m just saying that I don`t have a zero tolerance approach to my nanny doing it at all, as some people on this comment thread apparently do. If someone had told me they saw her smoking outside while pushing my son in the stroller, it wouldn`t have bothered me, but obviously, I don`t speak for everyone.
L, I just have to comment. It does seem overdone to have to change your shirt after smoking. But my friend A. works for the ACS, and has access to a lot of medical journals and such. You know how people who smoke usually smell like they do? That is because the chemicals do cling to their clothing. You might not notice someone who smokes a few cigarettes, but for a chain smoker, well, phew! We choose to keep all smokers away from our son whenever possible. So of course our nanny does not smoke. It's all about preferance, and like you I only speak for myself.
239 you scare the hell out of me! "It should be ilegal because it is gross?" what is wrong with you> Do you have any idea what you are saying? I pray to God that you do not vote! You cannot take peaoples rights away because YOU feel something is gross. Obviosly the person doing it does not think so. If you start thinking this way..soon..many of our rights will be taken away. Let me guess..you are a pc non spanker, non smoker, pro ilegal immigrant, pro welfare system..3 strikes and your out kind of person! You probably think the the Bohemian Grove and CFR are non exsistent too! People like you are frightening! This is why our world is so screwed up!
To the person who posted at 2:39.You are obviously not an educated person. Let me tell you..I think homosexuality is gross. I am a not a homophobe..it just happens to go against my religion and personal beliefs. With that said..I do not beleive that I have a right to tell someone else how to live their lives nor to judge them ..as a higher power will judge all of us someday! When out in public I keep my opinon(as that is all it is) to myself and try my hardest to be kind and accepting. I also think facial peircings and tatooed make-up are gross! Should those things be ilegal? I saw a 300 lb women with her chest hanging out and a thong showing off her loveley plumbers crack last week at a local mall..discusting absolutley...but you know what..we live in America buddy & I would never dream of taking away someone's rights just because I don't agree with what they do! Land of the free. I am a non smoker. I too think it is gross. But I am not an idiot..taking away rights because a group of PC people deem it gross is very dangerous!!
You better start thinking for yourself and realize just what you are saying because someday.. a group of people are going to decide that they don't like something you do..!! I hope if you are a voter..you seriously consider just what it is you are voting for!..all you
smokers...smoke!!
Fat women..flaunt it if you've got it!
Homosexual couples..fight for your right to marry!
Spankers..keep spanking your children.
and idots who think smoking should be ileagl because it is Gross...figure it out!!
idiots like 11:32 should be rounded up and dropped off on the front lines in Iraq.
Yes,I agree with all of the ilegal immigrants!!
1235..I agree with youlets dump the homos and ilegals too!
this is directed at poster 1235..I am anon 1132 and I am an idiot why? Becuase I am honest about my feelings and not afraid to say so?
and becuase I am not ready to start taking away peoples rights just becuase I am too narrow minded to see things their way?
I don't smoke..can't stand it..but others do like it and you have no right to take that away just because you don't like it!
It is you that are an idiot. You are so narccisistic! You are obviously unable to comprehend that what might be right for you may not be right for others and vice versa! You need to broaden your mind and your education!
smokers smoke!!!
homos marry1!
Fat chicks flaunt it!!
234 you are fabulous! While your veiws on homosexuality suck,I commend you for your honesty and your open mindedness!Wish more posters would think for themselves and stop taking these posts to such extremes!!
freaked..a baby nurse is a nanny ..only glorified!!!Get over it! L, is right! and you are an extremist who over reacts!!
I think most of us grown up with smoking parents.... First of all I'll never hire anybody who smokes. As a nonsmoker, I'll smell it in seconds...
The babynurse was smoking outside...wonder what is worst live in a city or have a smoking babynurse???!!!
I think the first makes our children's lungs black way faster.
As a mother who used a baby nurse and who will not apologize for that, I think the idea of a smoking baby nurse is pathetic. It isn't about the money, but for 3,000 a week, I think I'd go ahead and specify a NON SMOKER!
Wow, 3,000 a week???? I`m in the wrong business!
-- Just kidding. No one would ever hire a spanking wino as a baby nurse. :)
649..you should apologize but not to us..to your child who is missing out on major bonding with mommy!!Unless you are medically unable you need to get your lazy ass up and take care of your newborn, precious infant!! Working fulltime is not a valid excuse to employ a babynurse!
Smoking should be illegal in public places not be cause it is "gross", but because it harms others who want nothing to do with it. That old adage "your right to swing your fist ends at the tip of my nose" is appropriate in this case. You want to harm your own body by overindulging in alcohol, drugs or food, go ahead. But tobacco smoke harms others against their will. I am not one for giving away freedoms. Post 9-11 hysteria where Americans were willing to give away all kinds of personal privacy and freedoms in the name of "security" was frightening and disheartening.
"Working fulltime is not a valid excuse to employ a babynurse."
You bet your booty it is.
"You should apologize...to your child who is missing out on major bonding with mommy."
Funny, no one every says that about working daddies of newborns.
I went back fulltime when my youngest was 14 weeks old, and I have the same relationship with him as I do with the older two, with whom I was at home fulltime. I`m not saying there aren`t selfish working mothers who don`t care about bonding with their babies, because there cetainly are -- I`m saying that not every child of a working mother is "missing out on major bonding with mommy."
In my case, I chose to work, but remember that single mothers HAVE to work.
jmt, while you have a point taking away the right to smoke in public has already been done in so many places! Stores, resturaunts, schools, public transportation and beaches! Non smokers have been more than protected. Smoking in an outdoor public park is not endangering anyone.
What if this crazy world went the oppisate way and said all non smoker can breathe fresh air in their own back yards..only? Would that be fair? Absolutley not. Just as a non smoker has a right to enjoy a public life..so does a smoker.
I myself do nont smoke.I myself cannot stand the smell.
I cannot beleive the rights that people have been forced to give up.
Do you agree that if I own a business I should be able to run it to my liking?
Say I am a smoker. I want to run a smoking resturaunt, knowing full well that I will most likely lose business to the non-smoking cafe across the street.
The law says I cannot do so? WTH is that? It is my business..who knows..I might hit it big offering a refuge for hungry smokers. Why the hell is it the goverenments busines? Non smokers do not have to eat here! right?
Why have we let them take these rights away?
L, I usually agree with you and love to read your blogs! Not this time!! But,I will keep looking for you as you always have something of interest to say! Cheers!!
Smokers should be shamed and ridiculed. BIG Tobacco should be extinguished. Their profits should be confiscated and handed over to the American Famring Industry. People who smoke in public should be spat upon, for their is nothing as vile as a smoker.
And you my friend above sound like a smoker in disguise. I don't buy for one moment that you don't puff on the most dangerous dragon of them all.
151 "smokers should be shamed and ridiculed" but you are the same person voting against the death penalty right??? Let the men that rape little girls live rent free while getting an education in our prisons but shame, ridicule and spit on smokers!! You are an ass!!
I hope you do not have babies!!
Why don't you just move to a Comunist country where you will be happier..better yet, stick around here because in no time that is what will be happening here. Do you even know anything about our government or are you one of the many PC voters who only knows and beleives what they here? I am guessing the latter!
Because you don't like something does not make a valid point for making it ilegal? It only makes you look like an uneducated blogger who spreads his opinon everywhere and that is scary!!
If I thought you were educated enough to understand it I would post a few sites for you to check out regarding our crooked goverment and what they want to take away from you and the rest of us by 2020..but you obviously could not handle it! You are pathetic and I pray you are not a voter!!!
I am a voter and a generous contributor!
I am anti smoking and pro death penalty.
And oh yeah, 1 strike and YOU ARE OUT.
Also, I would not be opposed to death sentences to anyone who hurt a child (the first time).
306 You are so full of it! Generous contributor my foot! You are a bumbling idiot encouraging the govermant to take away our constitutional rights!!
NP- I think you meant to sign that,
"smokey smokerson"
"Do you agree that if I own a business I should be able to run it to my liking?"
Not if you do business with the public at large -- in that case, all the laws certainly would apply to you, whether laws about smoking or laws about age/sex discrimination, etc.
However, you are free to establish a PRIVATE CLUB, for men only, women only, smokers only, etc. That`s how some golf clubs get around admitting women (or minorities, or people of a certain religion).
I`m not saying that`s how it should be, but that`s the way the laws work in the U.S. now.
np yeah right!! Quit responding to your own posts ignorant voter boy!
151..306..&412.(all the same poster).you can make jokes all you want..that is obviously the only mentality you know..yet another reason I fear you if you are a voter. Hope you are still laughing when all your rights are gone and you are paying 10.00 a gallon for gas idiot!!
"L" continues to rock the comment section. "L" for Pres. 2008
Uh... thanks, I guess. Pres? No thanks. Besides, who would elect a spanking wino/selfish career woman, who tolerates other people`s dirty smoking habits?
Hilary has a much better chance. Or Obama.
Obama had shot. Now there are kinds of details floating around that he is a Muslim pretending to be Catholic. I don't know that is true. I just received 3 emails on the subject! :(
9:35 If you believe those emails, I have one from St. Theresa and some from Canadian pharmacies you might like. Be sure to send them to ten people or ELSE.
