Playground at Ancient Park in NYC 12/12

Received Tuesday, December 12, 2006
Nanny/ Au Pair/ Sitter Caucasian with reddish-brownish hair, somewhat disheveled looking, wearing an orange and navy jacket. The nanny was pushing a child in a stroller. I saw her from the back. The stroller was I think one of those Bugs in an orange color with an orange canopy and black wheels and handle. I didn't get a good look at who was in the stroller when she passed. Walking next to her was a little girl who was oh I would say 3. She had on denim jeans with hearts on the cuffs of the jeans and pink Ugg style boots. Her jacket was black and red. What caught my attention was as she was walking away from us the Nanny/ Au Pair/ Sitter seemed to be unsteady on her feet. This was about 10:30/ 11:00 this morning.
As I watched her on her exit, the Nanny/ Au Pair/ Sitter again lost her footing literally knocking the 3 year old into the iron gates. And I don't mean a slight /unnoticeable nudge. She really was dizzy or something. I mean I exchanged looks with another mother standing at the opposite side of me. The look was "what is going on". I don't think this is abuse but something was wrong with that Nanny/ Au Pair/ Sitter. Something was wrong! Yes I probably should have stopped her and asked her if she was okay & I feel terrible!

Yes, maybe she was sick and was heading home to call her employer. There is a flu going around, lots of high fevers. maybe next time when you somebody in that condition, ask them if they need help! Sheesh

I agree - she was probably hammered.

Some of the posters here are morons really. Yeah, right she was drunk-real nice. Isn't it more likely that she was sick?

I am so glad you sent this in and let me tell you why. Here is how I see it. The nanny is getting sick. Say it is yesterday. The boss notices this and does some btch boss guilting by referencing some important meeting or call she has tomorrow. The nanny feels sicker today when she wakes up. She arrives at work looking like death. The boss says something like, "okay if you could pick up the drycleaning and make sure the kids get to the park before the rain" and then leaves without asking the nanny how she is feeling. All day long the nanny will take care of those kids barely able to stand up. Employing a nanny is so classist and disgusting.

436- I can totally see that. It's always about the employer.

If she is stumbling drunk at 10:30A.M., that would be hard for the employer to miss. It is more likly she was ill, and could have used some help.

I agree that she was most likely ill, and hopefully on her way home to call her boss to let her know. When I was working at a daycare I would get sick all of the time and one of those times I had caught something that gave me a fever, the chills and I was very dizzy. I never called out because I didn't want to leave the center hanging, so I showed up that day. But when I couldn't stand on my own two feet without feeling like I was going to trip, I had to ask them to let me leave because I was an infant teacher and I didn't want to endanger the infants. Thankfully she wasn't holding the child in the stroller when she lost her balance and hopefully the little girl is okay. About the drunk comments, I mean 10 am to be drunk is rather early, unless she is an alcoholic, in which case I would hope that her employer pays enough attention to notice if her nanny is drunk.

She could have had MS (multiple sclerosis). I have MS and often my balance is very off, to the point that I would likely look drunk to people who didn't know otherwise.

436: If employing a nanny is "classist and disgusting", then a lot of women would have no income. I love how you made up all these details about the employer based on no facts.

436..where do you come up with this stuff????????

436 I am a nanny and you sound classist and disgusting if you want to know the truth.

Sorry 436, but I have to jump on the bandwagon here, too. If having a nanny is classist and disgusting, then why are you here? Are you a nanny? A former nanny that had a bad experience? Or do you know someone who is one? You obviously don't employ one.

I belive maybe she was sick, I have known nannies who have to work nomatter how sick they are because thier employer did not care, and does not want to stay home with thier kids.It has also happen to me, where i had to put my foot down and say i am not coming to work because my health comes first.TL

I was on my elevator earlier this week with another woman and a semi-retarded man and his 'nanny' or attendant. At one point, the nanny turned and said something to the man. When they got off, the other resident said "well, she had coctails for breakfast". She said she could clearly smell the alcohol on her breath. It was 8:40 in the morning. So, yes, it does happen.
