I have been a nanny for over 5 years.
I have plenty of experience, amazing references, and I'm still in contact with every person I've ever worked for. I am DISGUSTED and EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED in the ad's I see on this site. I shouldn't be to surprised seeing as how it's craigslist but some of you need to brush up on the LAWS regarding nannies.
1st- if a nanny is using their own vehicle to transport your children and run your errands then you should be paying her by the mile. If they are using their own personal vehicle chances are they are paying the car payment, the insurance, all the maintenance, and general wear and tear so gas money shouldn't be that much to ask for.
2nd- Living in isn't easy for the nanny either. You already share a work and a living space. The nanny does not need to know about your personal and private life. I don't need to know that your having marital problems, or that your having money woes, or that you hate your job. Chances are I hate my job too. I may LOVE your children to death and treat them as I would my very own but everyone reaches a breaking point and it's normally nothing to do with the children.
3rd- If you take us on a vacation please don't act as if your doing us a favor. Yes we may get to go somewhere we've never been before or get a day off during the process but it's normally not a vacation for us. I deserve my vacations just like you deserve yours.
4th- Some of you need a wake up call when it comes to SALARY. No I do not want to watch your children, clean your house, do your laundry, run your errands, pay for my own gas all while making less than $5 an hour. Are you insane? Would you work for less than $5? I highly doubt it so why do you think I deserve to be paid so little. I also don't want to work between 50-60 hours a week and not be paid overtime. It's completely unfair and let me remind you ILLEGAL.
5th- I don't normally know when I'll be sick so if I wake up in the middle of the night throwing up I don't want to get lectured or get an email about calling in sick. I understand that everyone needs some kind of notice but a lot of people don't plan on being or getting sick. So please excuse me if I call in and use my sick days that I've earned.
6th- You need to make money available if you expect me to run errands or take your children somewhere like the zoo, museum, out to eat, etc. I do not think it's fair that I have to shell out my own money to pay for your things and then wait around until you have the cash on you to reimburse me. It's not okay.
7th- Moms looking for last minute babysitters, you need to seriously re-evaluate how much you care for your children. Posting an ad on craigslist for a last minute babysitter does not give you enough time to get to know the person or the persons background. For all you know you could be hiring a lazy person who's gonna give a damn about your children, or worse you could end up hiring a pedophile or a murderer. I mean seriously I wouldn't trust my most precious posession to someone I've never met before. Check your heads checked please.
8th- CONTRACTS are important. We as nannies stick to them and so should you. If my contract states a certain number of days, hours, pay, sick time, vacation time, overtime pay I expect you to stick to what we've agree'd upon. I don't want to start this job, get comfortable, and then have you add on making your bed, doing your laundry, making family meals, staying late with no notice. You really need to stick to what you asked for in the beginning or RE-NEGOTIATE if necessary.
Lastly all I would like for you people to do is realize that we are humans too. Yes this is our job and any good nanny or babysitter is going to do the job to the best of their ability. We take pride in our work and we expect to be treated as you expect to be treated. Just because we are working for you and caring for your children doesn't mean you can take advantage of us or treat us like we're below you. We are after all caring for your CHILDREN. We deserve to be treated with respect. We deserve to be appreciated. We deserve to be treated fairly.
Would you be okay with being treated like this by your employer? My guess would be NO you wouldn't so why on earth would you think it's appropriate to treat someone else that way.

If you're looking for a full-time nanny, why do you feel that $280 a week is appropriate pay? That's about $1,100 a month--who can live on that? That's like $7 an hour!!!! Nannies make twice or three times that amount per hour!!!!
I can understand if the babysitting was 2-3 times a week for only a few hours, but if you're looking for 40 hours a week, nannies would make about $1,000 a WEEK. Even a nanny who speaks English as a second language would most likely not work for $280 a week. That is really insulting pay. You'll either get no responses because nannies know better, or you'll get responses from people who aren't experienced, skilled, or trustworthy.
Is it worth it to put your children in the hands of someone who would work below minimum wage for a full-time nanny job????? If your children are important to you, then you will see the difference in the caliber of candidates if you post an ad for a 40 hour work week, but the pay is $1,000 a week. You'll suddenly get responses from college-educated nannies or nannies who have glowing references and years of experience. Please don't be cheap.

Youa re expecting someone to stop their day for your child, drive to and from your house, and NEVER USE THE PHONE for pennies. The only person that may answer your ad would probably be a teen and anyone over 16 can work anywhere else for much more money and not be under a microscope. The other option is a crack head who is desperate for money. Get real honey. It is obvious how much your daughter means to you. Oh, and I like the little threat....." I would have to agree with the other responses to this original post. It is absolutely absurd for you to think that you can only pay 60 dollars per week for 25 hours of care. You have restrictions such as "no phone use" or "no tv", but yet, you can not pay for those requests. In childcare, like one person said, you DEFINITELY get what you pay for. I have been a sitter since I was 15, a tutor since 18, and a nanny since 20. I began charging $5/hr, and now that I am 21, and this is my ONLY source of income, I charge $10/hr, and sometimes, even more. If you want reliable, QUALITY childcare, at a low rate, you have to be willing to accept the fact that you have to pay more than $2.40/hr.
You require someone 17+, but a 13 year old girl wouldn't even work for that. I do understand that times are tough, and not everyone is ABLE to pay that much money for the childcare they'd like for their little ones, but if that is the case...find a wonderful home daycare with 5-6 young ones your child's age. These are, typically, amazing places for children to gain social and educational skills with the love and care of an intimate environment. They would be more within your price range. They, also, adhere to guidelines like "no phones" and limited television.
Point being...If you want someone to watch your children, be willing to pay more or readjust what you're willing to do for such care.
And as for your mother always being there...If she's there, and watching so closely, get HER to watch your little girl. If she micromanages and pays such close attention, she won't have any trouble doing the job.
